      J. Lo, Madonna , Beyonce and many others with little talent seem to add "Add Libs" to their songs and demand a full writing credit.

      Avril just stole someone's song.

I am friends with two guys who wrote songs on her first album. She got writting credtis but did not write a single song. The only thing she contributed to on the WHOLE album was she had the "idea" for the song sk8tr boi.

Interesting article. I know for a fact that some artists put the word out to songwriters for their next CD with the stipulation "co-writes only." Its the price a hungry songwriter pays, to play in the big leagues. Its been going on for years and years and years. Avril is not the first.

This is not a new trend. Paul Anka wrote the theme for "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" but Carson only okayed the use of the song if Anka gave him 50% songwriting credit. This was back in the '60s. This theme played every weeknight on NBC for about 25 years and that 50% credit that Anka was forced to give up was worth about $10 million.

This stuff has been going on in the pop world since pop music exsisted. All of a sudden douches like Avril are worried about their credibility….which is funny considering she never had any to begin with. It's like Britney comparing herself to Motzart.

There are two sides to this coin. Avril is a pop creation, make no mistake about it. She isn't a song writer or even a particularly creative person. CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) aired a special in the spring and it was terrible. Avril can't dance and she can't deliver a song unless she is in a stadium with a bunch of screaming 14-year-olds. Chantal Kreviazuk, on the other hand, is a songwriter and an artist. She is also a mother of two and has to make a living, and that includes holding your nose while some billboard takes credit for your song, just because she has mass appeal. I believe Kreviazuk's comments were retracted because she realized they would damage her ability to sell songs to other stars (she probably doesn't give a rat's ass about Lavigne), not because they weren't true. I also believe she and other songwriters accept this as part of the business. It doesn't make it right, just the way it is. The payoff for Kreviazuk and other songwriters is more money than they would ever make cutting their own albums, with their own material.

Look people, if you are going to buy overproduced music from POP stars you are getting fast-food music, not real art. Avril is NOT a songwriter, she is the production of a group of execs making bank on the pop girl rage that started back in the 90s. EVERYONE in the music industry knows about her bullsh*t tantrums to have writing credit and EVERYONE knows she doesn't have any songwriting talent. Come on it is common knowledge. The only reason Chantal retracted her comments, which were true, is that a music exec basically told her "you'll never work in this town again…"

#18 and #19, well said. She retracted those comments out of strategy, not sympathy. At least we know who the real artist is. And it's not the poptarts. I think the songwriters are clever, and even though they have to bite their tongues once in a while, they will be the ones laughing all the way to the bank. =)

      25

Oh yeah that little poser….hmmm I agree with the posters who say Chantel doesn't give a rats ass about that little over hyped, uneducated, rude brat!!! Her people or lawyer was no doubt behind her retraction which is too bad ’cause I believe Kreviazuk and admire her talent and stance about Avril's writing creditability or lack off. But really are we shocked? All you have to do is listen to Avril for a second…the girl can hardly function without, well, you know, like, like whatever, like, I'll spit on you, you know, like……. like oh My Gawd…..

Do you know how many people take credit for writing their own books and never wrote a word? Infinite. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin got busted on a biography and threw the blame at her staff. Staff? Did Hemingway have a staff? Hillary "wrote" "It Takes A Village?" No. The title had been applied to a book published years earlier and she did not write a word. JFK, "While England Slept". It is wrong to take credit and THEN steal the money. It is plagiarism. Julie Andrews in the "Sound of Music", did not give Marney Nixon credit for singing those songs. Rant off.

What ? u didn'tknow that existed? In the Latin Music Industry it has happened for ages. Now i guess it infiltrated the anglo market. That's why you see the same artists and producers. It is a business, a very tight and dirty one. You have to be thick skinned to be able to handle it and succeed. In the latin industry, even the Presidents of the labels use their own recording studios and charge the label and handload, in addition to work for hire arrangers that never appear in the credits and they use pseudonims as songwriters. True story. This is the caseof a former
Sony Music President that was fired for the same reason (Os*** L***d)

    36. Lindsey says – reply to this

      36

The only way for this to stop is if the true artists (the songwriters) refuse to give up their publishing rights. After a while, singers (the untalented ass clowns) will either only put out shitty songs that noone wants to buy and listen too or they will start doing what is right…wait…is that already happening? Because MOST of the songs on the radio right now are worthless. Do you think there is a connection to CD sales dropping????

    37. Yup. says – reply to this

      37

You know, giving singers credit might not be a totally bad idea. (Except to songwriters.) They need a retirement fund, too, as the label grabs most of what they make in the beginning to recoup costs. One or two hit wonders could actually actually feed their family or maybe pay the rent at their retirement homes. Would the songwriter make any money off of a song collecting dust, or be willing to SHARE a bit with a good vocalist who might propel that song, thus your songwriting, into sales? The issue would be negotiating percentages.

The unnamed ripoff artist in the article has to be Shania Twain. She can't even sing never mind write a tune. Lip syncs and takes writing credits! What a product.

      39

Well actually, Avril wrote her own songs as a teen, but the Matrix decided theirs were better, so she worked with that. She was always, and still is very active with the melodies and actual song itself, as with the lyrics.

    40. Lori B says – reply to this

      40

It's been a well known rumour regarding Avril's songwriting credibility from the start. Who knows? As for crediting the proper songwriters,,,it goes way back to greed, money and complete dishonesty. Robbie Robertson of "The Band" took full credit for songwriting when he had copywritten the songs in his name only. John Fogerty from "Creedence Clearwater Revival" got taken from his record company for his rights to the songs he wrote. The list goes on and on. It's a dirty business for sure. I've heard here in Canada,,that years ago when Shania Twain married Mutt Lange,,that he propelled her album,in which he produced ,to platinum status instantly,,by buying up a million copies. No-one is questioning the perported talent of these individuals,,its just sometimes or should i say most of the time,,there is some sort of underhanded business going on that we're not privy to.

um…why are people surprised by this article?usually when people shit on pop music and pop stars it is because these people are puppets, not artists!of course somebody else is writing thier shit!and the shit is usually shit,no offense to the writers….but i know people that can write these kind of lyrics in thier sleep.but if the writers want credit for the lyrics, of course that is fair and they should get the credit.whatever.Avrils a stupid poser.POSER POSER POSER!!!!And didnt she marry that other poser from the biggest poser band Sum 41?God they are perfect for eachother.

this is nothing new its what has allways happened.

      as for Chantal Kreviazuk ,
she has never once on any album writen a song on her own not once,
and the only thing she did for Gwen was the LaLala bit , so why is she so up her own ass ,she is icapable of being succesful and icappable of even making an album on her own.

what is wrong with co-writing , list all the bands in your CD collection were more than one person in the band wrote the songs , take a look at the song credits , are they all fake ?

aha, is anyone really surprised with this whole thing?
i'm actually amazed at the fact that la lavigne didn't rip-off Butch Walker for "my happy ending" are you kidding? that bitch has no talent, give me a fucking break!!
look at such shitty song as "Complicated" there's no essence in those lyrics and u really expect her to do good writing?
shit I wrote songs when i was 13 and they're still better than her shit.
The Industry has been and will always be a life-talent-sucking-machine and that's why indy artists should stay indy.

    47. fionalicious says – reply to this

      47

and btw i think TED #44 it's friends with Lavigne or probably that fuggly husband of hers, who should get a fucking nose job, anyway, it doesn't matter what Chantal wrote or not, if it was lala, or fuck off, whatever, the point in the article is to inform us all "SHIT HAPPENS ON A DAILY BASIS" that's it, that's the industry, that's how it works, no one wants you until you show they can profit BIG TIME out of whatever you do.
Avril was a hit, why? she has the teenyboopers whatever on her side, as she critized boy bands she was doing the same damn thing, she's no better than the bsb or nsync, hell no!, she's even worse, cuz at least they were aware of who they were and what they did.

I had heard about this practice b/f. I specifically remember a story about Elvis wanting to do Dolly Parton's song, "I Will Always Love You," but Col. Parker demanded that they get publishing rights. Dolly was devastated b/c she really wanted Elvis to sing her song, but she said no. Boy, was that the right move. When Whitney Houston's version came out, half of the profits would have gone to Elvis' estate. Smart woman, that Dolly.

Hey, Buster Cherry (#29), the reason Marni Nixon didn't get credit for singing for Julie Andrews is that she DIDN'T. Moron, she did the voice of Natalie Wood in West Side Story, and appeared ON SCREEN as a nun in The Sound of Music. Gees, if you're gonna bitch about something, at least know what you're talking about!

    51. Mary says – reply to this

      51

haha, hate that bitch probably more than all of you together, I knew she wasnt doing anything herself. Like "complicated", which she wrote all herself, and was not shy to tell EVERYONE. Then, a couple of years later, it is revealed that the Matrix who also wrote for Ashlee Simpson (listen to the sound, watch her style -just like Avril), that they completely wrote the whole song, Avril came in and "changed a few words"… nothing more to say
