   I honestly had never heard the joke about Brits having bad teeth until the Austin Powers movies, so don't blame Americans for getting that whole stereotype started. Blame Mike Myers. Having said that, I do think that we Americans do spend more money on whitenings, cleanings, etc. My dentist told me that fewer people are getting cavities, so they turned to cosmetic dentistry to keep business. And I hope that I don't get flamed for this, but having lived in England for a time, I can say that a lot of young people had rotting teeth - which was in need of general dentistry, not cosmetic. I wondered if many of the kids had well water as opposed to "city" water that has flouride. I say this b/c as a child I had lots of cavities myself even though I brushed and flossed. I have a good friend who grew up in England and she said that in the last decade or so, it is almost impossible to get to the dentist in the U.K.
