I love her hair. I thought she was rather endearing and cute on her TV show. I was thinking she was going to be vacant, like that look she always has on her face. There wasn't anything on TV that night, so I watched and thought she was ok. I also like the edgy clothes she wears, she looks great in them.

I do agree, being asian myself, that this comment, though attempting to be humorous, reflects old world ideas that perez still believes (ignorantly) about asian women. His generalization about asian women as a whole culture has no basis in present day society - maybe in the days when Chinese women bound their feet, but those days are long gone. This post just makes me shake my head in frustration because of the stereotype it seems to perpetuate of asian women being submissive and passive - as if it's solely "our custom" to cover our mouths and nobody else's. I cover my mouth when I laugh, but I also brush my teeth in the morning and shower at night. These things do not define me as a race or as a gender. I just think that Perez did not need to add in that comment. He would have been fine leaving that out.
As for Janie, I hope you do not take umbrage to this, but it seems like you have been offended by asians in vietnamese owned nail salons. I can't explain why the manicurists or pedicurists did not speak to you while you were having your nails done, however you do have to admit that you were making a generalization that all "asian" salons will give you this same negative experience you had before, hence why you will never go back. While we all generalize (it's natural), it still is frustrating (from an asian point of view) to hear these things because it promotes something negative. The truth is asian women do not want to be viewed as passive and we aren't. But that's the message that is sent out when comments like these are publicly posted. It may be humorous to you, but some of us don't find the humor in it and you have to just allow us to feel that way, rather than trying to make light of the situation.

I couldn't figure out why Katie Holmes and Victoria were pals and I thought Victoria was a snob because she doesn't smile. After seeing her show - I get it! She is classy, beautiful, funny and very personable. These days everyone lives in jeans and a T-shirt. Victoria dress beautifully for everything - even errands. I wish more people would follow and dress better - Katie is.
