I TOTALLY AGREE WITH NAN, I WATCHED THAT PARTICULAR SHOW AND SHE JUST TORE HIM APART. I PERSONALLY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT HE DESERVED IT AND OPRAH WAS BEING A BIATCH. SHE ONLY DID THAT SHOW BECAUSE OF THE RESPONSE THAT SHE RECEIVED FROM HER FANS. I REALLY LIKE O BUT THAT WAS HORRIBLE WHAT SHE DID TO THAT MAN.

This old lady is 100% correct. Oprah is a self-serving beeotch. All she wants to do is promote BLACK, BLACK, BLACK!!!! Money does not buy class or respectability, you can take a girl out of the ghetto….

  20. KarenCdn says – reply to this

    20

I absolutely agree with Nan Talese. I was totally disgusted with Oprah's behaviour upon viewing this particular show. What that show had displayed that day was not the "truth" about James Frey. But the truth that is Oprah. Self-serving, hipocracy. From that show on, I have never viewed her show again. I was absolutely appalled by her "sanctimoniousness".

This woman is a complete idiot. The fact is, the man lied in a book that was supposed to be an autobiography… NONFICTION. If it contains any facts that aren't true, it is considered FICTION.

  25. Edgar says – reply to this

    25

Oprah fans are just fucking retards that can't make up their on goddamn minds about anything. Monkey see, monkey do. Oprah says buy this book, they go out and but it. Oprah says this, Oprah says that, who the fuck cares. She got fat, she got thin, now she is a fucking role model to stay at home, bored out of their fucking minds, housewives that have nothing better to do than to listen to a fat bitch jabber on about worthless shit. My advice to them is get a fucking job you worthless, contribute nothing to society, human beings. At least that way you will help your husband who buts his ass to buy you those Oprah recommended books.

  26. j says – reply to this

I absolutly agree with her comments on O, I also watched the show and I couldn't believe how rude she was. Whether he exaggerated his memoir or not, it was a great book and who doesn't fib every now and then!

  27. YumYum says – reply to this

    27

Both of them are gullible fools. Oprah believes everything she hears and then spits it out for the masses. Who then also believe it. Nan should have done some of her own research. They both deserve to be called out as suckers.

UUUGGGHHH!!!! My ears are bleeding from listening to that droll speach. Anyhoo, she's got a point. I'm sure it did cost her a pretty penny when the big O talked against the book. On the other hand, why is it that people fall at O's feet? Why is it that when she speaks, people take it as gospel??? She's no EF Hutton ya know! I think she's a racist, pompous blowhole.

  30. COCO says – reply to this

    30

Oprah is not God, she make her fortune as a compassioned host, and I'm sure she started that way, but after all the money, all the power and all the success, is only BUSINESS for Oprah. She became another self-absorved celebrity. Remember the big party she host not long ago. She asked all her guest to dress in black, so everybody did. And the bitch went to the party dress in RED.- EGO my friends, pure EGO.

  33. L35L13 says – reply to this

    33

I'm not sure why any of you people actually agree with this crazy woman. First, she can't even begin to gather a coherent sentence. No wonder why she's a publisher and not a writer. And sanctimonious? This woman is the exact definition of it herself. Why even bring it up after almost 8 months? Obviously the book sales are incredibly low and she thinks that this will somehow bring the sales up. I'm sure not buying it.

  34. Susannah says – reply to this

I think she is absolutely right! Fat OPRAH did attack James Frey that day, and it was absolutely pathetic to watch her do it. She sat on her big fat arse that day acting like a spoiled brat, like someone who took candy from her mouth. She lost alot of viewers that day, and I am glad. She deserves everything she gets. Im glad she is a miserable old bag, she had it coming…who does she think she is? And who cares.

oprah is a hypocrit. remember when she so generously donated the pontiacs to studio audience full of single moms? and then forgot to tell them if they kept the cars they would have to pay the sales tax and title fees on them which amounted to several thousand dollars which the the show was not going to pay. oops. the more people that speak out against her the better. she has become a self-important monster. go nan, go.

  48. fashionstar says – reply to this

    48

I was like 20 when the book came out and when I read it I could tell that certain incidents were a little exagerated because it all seemed so perfectly tragic, how come Oprah who's twice that age couldn't tell? Regardless I think the book was written well and had a good message to help empower people, so what if the guy embellished a little? Does that mean now his book sucks? I felt like Oprah totally built him up and then tore him down and it's not like frey told her to have him on her show. It was a good book Oprah, and I'm sure any 5th grader could have seen certain things were fake but who cares, shut the eff up and stop being such a self righteous jerk.

#25 Edgar, you are a total idiot. I'm a SAHM to 2 boys, and they have the best life ever. An educated mom who makes sacrifices so that they don't turn out like little nasty boys like you.

However, I watch Oprah about once a month if even, but I did see that show. I thought she was a little harsh, and Jame's fabrications didn't take away from an excellent book, with a powerful message. But you know what, he did LIE. sorry there James, but that's what happens when you fib…people get a little peeved.

  51. Disappointed with OPRAH!!! says – reply to this

    51

OPRAH should research a product before she endorses it. Shame on her to believe a memoir is based on facts. The book is great and James Frey was treated unfairly by Oprah and and all of her illiterate followers. Please continue writing books James because I love reading them. :)

    craziness, I go to UNT.
I was actually gonna go to that but it costs big money…

Had I been there I would have gotten up and smacked that biatch. Oprah doesn't randomly lash out at people. Besides, it's totally the publisher's fault. James Frey never meant for his book to be published as memoirs. it was supposed to be a fiction novel.
That ho is trying to deflect blame.

  54. Lauren V says – reply to this

    54

I read the book and it was AMAZING! I could care less if it was 100% true or not. Everyone should read this book, it was beautifuly written. Screw Oprah for being such a bitch about it. Nothing about the book changed after it came out that he made some stuff up. Who cares if he was arrested or not! Who cares if he had a med free route canal? It still gave me the chills! Again everyone should read that book!!!

  55. L35L13 says – reply to this

    55

Seeing as the whole situation is pretty much Nan's fault, I can see how she's try and blame Oprah for bringing out the real truth to her audience. IT IS THE PUBLISHER'S JOB TO FACT CHECK. Therefore, Nan didn't do her job correctly.

Please check out The Smoking Gun's website for the whole truth regarding this situation!

    57

I love how Talese is changing the subject here. The PROBLEM is that she chose to publish a work of fiction as a factual account. How about addressing that issue instead of moaning that Oprah helped sell FOUR MILLION copies of the crappy book and then dared to point out it wasn't what it was marketed to be. It's not about Oprah, it's about Talese's decision to misrepresent the book as something it isn't!

  60. tembeaux says – reply to this

    60

Nan Talese begins her little tirade by grossly minimizing the misrepresentations made by her client James Frey. Oprah asked him to distinguish for her viewers which portions of the book were fact and which were fiction. The extent of the outright fabrications ruined the book for me. The only reason the book was of interest was because it was alleged to be true.

  61. Mama Llama says – reply to this

    61

I stopped watching Oprah after she had Ellen Degeneres and Anne Heche on her show. She was so ignorant and disrespectful towards them, I couldn't take it anymore.

  62. L35L13 says – reply to this

    62

    FROM WIKIPEDIA:
Winfrey then brought out Frey's publisher Nan Talese to defend her decision to classify the book as a memoir, and forced Talese to admit that she had done nothing to check the book's veracity, despite the fact that her representatives had assured Winfrey's staff that the book was indeed non-fiction and described it as "brutally honest" in a press release.

  63. Jenna says – reply to this

Perez, think you could exaggerate a little more? This is the problem with America. No one can even speak anymore without pussies like you accusing them of yelling and attacking. Stop being such a fag Perez.

  65. "A Million Little Pieces" was a great book says – reply to this

    65

As the daughter of a mother who died at 51 of alcoholism, and I am not one to read "self help" books or buy in to the Oprah bullcrap victim garbage, I thought it was a very good book and it was a very realistic view of rehab and how it affects the family and also how the addict feels towards everyone around them. (If anyone has an addicted loved one, I recommend the book). When I found out he had embellished some things in there, it did not change my opinion of the book. Oprah just likes to get on her high horse and she has her fans in a trance-like cult. She knew, whatever she said would affect the man's future popularity and books sales because her fans are like a bunch of lemmings, clapping and shaking their heads no matter what in the hell she says.
It's time people stop acting like Oprah is God. She is not. She lives off of women thinking they are vulnerable victims of everything.

  66. Come on, Nan says – reply to this

    66

I saw that show, Nan Talese is the big, fat phony. She totally separated herself from James Frey during that show and left him to hang, doing nothing to show support until now. During that show, she sat there, silently. She approved the book as the editor, even though she knew the facts in the book were misrepresented…it was a LOT of Nan Talese's fault that the book was published falsely as a memoir and now she is trying to act like it was Oprah who was 'rough.'

  67. Carly says – reply to this

    67

Oprah acted like a big stupid bully when she publically scorned and humiliated James Frey. I coulnd't believe he didn't bitch slap her right there on stage , with how badly she treated him. This is by far the most boring thing ever posted on perez.

    #6: Yes, Oprah sucks.
8: Black women can be the biggest bitches you have ever met in your life if you piss them off. I know, I'm one of them.
    10: Amen to that!
19: Self-serving all the way. Isn't she the richest woman in America? But you're wrong about her wanting to promote the black agenda or whatever you're getting at. Black people don't watch her show not nearly as much as whites do. She lost respect in the community a very long time ago. The real promotion of black issues ended somewhere around the same time. Now she just has parties with her friends and brings a camera along. Take a good look at who the average person is in the audience and that's who is watching the show, not black people. She gets props for making a crap load of money, but other than that Oprah can go eff herself.

James Frye didn't just embellish, he basically made the whole thing up. However, I do not agree with Oprah's tactics of tricking people into comeing on the show to slam them. Plus, she was defending him until her audience started to turn.

I read the book before the controversy and I could not believe anyone actually believed this was a true story. Oprah should have seen through it. Also, when he came on the show the first few times he was insincere and nervous, something was definitely off.

Totally agree. Oprah IS sanctimonious. Haven't watched her show since she had madonna on there regarding her adoption. She basically told us if we didn't agree to hell with us. No Oprah, TO HELL WITH YOU and your show and your radio and your books. Haven't turned her on since and NEVER will.

People around Ms. Talese have carefully described the events around Oprah Winfrey and James Frey before, so this isn't really news. But anyone, and I mean *anyone*, who so much as flipped through James Frey's book, knew it didn't happen. Seriously. You'd have to be a complete moron. At the outset I knew it was showy embellishment and pretty bad prose. Then the crap with Oprah began. She built him up, and she pointed everyone to his book because she was convinced–convinced!–it was 100% true. And then it wasn't, and she flipped out. To take the error off herself, she humiliated Frey and his publisher in public. I haven't been able to stand her since.

    81

Nan Talese is 100% correct. Oprah's self-righteousness is nauseating. James Frey's book was listed as a MEMOIR, which is an author's take on his or her own life. If he embelished some facts, who cares. Why is it Oprah's responsibility to trick him into coming on the show and publicly humiliating him? She's the biggest liar of them all.

    82

I hate Oprah. Windbag. My God, everyone treats her like a princess, what right does she have to judge someone? I really hope someone unveils some sort of scandal on her. She needs to be taken down quite a few notches.

  83. She's Right says – reply to this

    83

This woman is right. Oprah had absolutely no right to condemn a man whose book had helped so many people. I can only help but wonder how many returned to drugs after she blasted him as a liar(which he isn't; he's a writer-and once your write anything down it becomes fiction). Oprah isn't a literary critic, she was in it for the ratings and I think she failed here.

  84. demanda says – reply to this

    84

I like Oprah, but I agree that she sometimes appears to have a "holier than thou" attitude. I loved the James Frey book, and I could not have cared less that he embellished a few things that were totally irrelevant to the story. This is not uncommon! But because this book was chosen for the Oprah book club, it was put under much more scrutiny than a normal book, causing it to be "investigated" by the smoking gun. Oprah originally went on Larry King saying that she still supported Mr. Frey and the book, yet changed her mind when some of her fans, who apparently have no understanding of literature, complained about the lack of "truth." I found that to be highly hypocritical as well, and I applaud Ms. Talese for speaking the truth on this matter.

Also, the person at the podium is Joyce Carol Oates. Her writing is incredible! (One of her books was also once chosen for O's Book Club. lol)

I agree with Nan 100%. Oprah is no saint. She's made some enormous mistakes the past few years. The only one worse than this overblown James Frey fiasco was having Shawn Devlin (the boy that was missing for 4 yrs that was molested, etc…) in less than a week after he was rescued. Oprah's out for Oprah, it's that simple. One day she'll get her comeuppance.

I admire that Oprah can change her mind and listen to her fan base when they said they felt lied to about the book. James Frey said on other interviews that the book was really his life story. Make it a novel if it is fiction, an autobiography if it is the truth.

I honestly cant imagine why James Frey felt the need to misrepresent it as a true autobiography, when it would surely have been just as popular if it were presented as fiction. Still, it's a shame the way that Oprah called him out on it, for full-on public humiliation like that. Even so, the work stands. I feel I got my money's worth on this book, and do not feel cheated one bit. Anyone who hasnt read it yet should definately check it out, you wont be dissapointed!

People have made a God of Oprah Winfrey. I think she is wrong the way she lied to Nan. She said she wanted to seek the truth yet she lied to Nan and James about what the show was about.

Thank goodness someone finally has the balls to speak out against Oprah. Nan is absolutely right in everything she said. Besides, if anyone thinks this is the first work of nonfiction that has been embellished they are delusional.

I think Kathy Griffin was very funny describing Oprah in her stand up act. She said she loves Oprah but Oprah thinks she's Jesus. She gets a paper cut and thinks its a stigmata.

Oprah is human and makes mistakes and it is o.k. for people to comment on it. Anyone that thinks Oprah is above criticism is not using their own brain.

Thank goodness that someone stood up to Oprah. Oprah hasn't done much for most people and she's a racist too!!!

    Oprah is a tool. A self-absorbed blowhard.
    And a lousy interviewer too.

She cannot ever shut up long enough to let her guests talk.

For those of you out there saying this book was completely BS and anyone who believes it is an idiot - have you ever lived through adiction with someone? Most likely not because almost everything (except maybe the dental work part) has and does happen all the time to addicts and family members. So even if he makes some stuff up, 95% of the stuff in there is very very likely and common with heavily addicted people, or else people would not be dying of drugs and alcohol every day. BELIEVE IT.

it was a complete overreaction on oprah's part. whatever happened to 'poetic licence'? a little bit of exaggeration in a book that quite possibly helped hundreds of thousands of people should be entirely overlooked, for the bigger picture.
