Ted C. has recently had items about Oprah. Some celebrity guests (read B-list) of Oprah were appalled by her behavior when they appeared on the show. She basically only talked to them on air; ignoring them before and after. I have seen many shows of Oprah where you can tell once she cuts to commerical break, they become invisible to her and she turns her head away. Ted also said they start blinking red lights when she is about to enter a room.

Unfortunately, many people take her word as gospel. My friend was a huge fan until she realized Oprah was a bit of a reverese racist and celebrity ass kisser.

Oprah felt like she had egg on her face and ripping this guy a new asshole was her way of making the most of what she perceived as an embarrassing situation. Bravo Nan Talese! Oprah, aka, Queen of all media, was "horrified" that James wrote that his girlfriend committed suicide by hanging herself rather than write what really happened, she slit her wrists. Writers string together fiction and non-fiction as a means to tell their stories. I loved the book, as Oprah did, and was not the least bit surprised to find the ex-drug addict had lied and embellished his story! HE WAS ON DRUGS FOR GODSAKES!

This is the exact same story i heard directly from James Frey himself. It is 100% the way it occured. After the show he was brought into a conference room and Oprah said, "Sorry James but its just business". He thought he was being brought on a show about truth with 8 other panelists and when he got out in the studio and saw one chair he thought "this is not good". Its not his fault they originally wanted to change the book from FICTION to NON FICTION.

Who would be dumb enough to think it was a true story. When I was reading it I didn't believe it really happened. So he embellished a little …. big deal! It was still a good book.

Anyone who agrees with this lady is full of shit. Plain and simple. I will tell you why. When Dave Eggers wrote A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius in his foreward he actually writes what is true and what he embellished. He never once said it is all true…this is exactly what happened. As a credible writer that is what you are supposed to do. As a writer you sell it as fiction, truth, or based on truth. He and his publisher had a right to be called out on misleading the public. It's the same with Mili Vanili…they had to give back their grammy and go before the grammy board and explain themselves. If Frey would have said initallly all of this is not true, some things embellished then there wouldnt' have been a problem. Oprah had every right to call him out and she was not that hard on him. People cannot stand to see a woman in power…let it had been a man doing that same interview and nobody would have said anything about.

I saw this show. Two days later, I cancelled my subscription to her magazine. I asked the switchboard lady if she wanted to know why. She said "James Frey, Right?" I said "Bingo". Lady said, "Yeah, I've been hearing it all day.

Only oprah would do a full week on a road-trip with her BFF. You do know that once she aired it, every dollar she spent was a business expense. Can anyone say Legends lunch? How many times did we see that? Oh my God, I can't stand this woman.

All those that agree w/Frey serve as an example of just how useless the truth has become. It's outdated. Not only do people no longer mind being lied to, they actually prefer it to the truth if it's more interesting. A memmoire is not a novel, it's not supposed to be a work of fiction. Frey got everything he deserved, but I only wish it had been served to many others as well. With all due respect to the public's preference for a popcorn diet of lies, I prefer the truth. It's far more substantial. And I used to know where I could find it, but now lying has infested everything. News=bullshit…memmoires=fiction…truth=obsolete

I stopped watching her after the t.v. screen became too small to hold her ego. I got tired of the Gospel according to Oprah. good for her she's made lots of money, we all have the right to do that and much of it is because of her hard work and much is luck. However she acts like people without money are less than and she is surrounded by so many ass kissers, she has lost touch with reality. He wrote a book some of it was fiction. Some of the same people who chastised him have probably lied on a resume, lied to their spouses and on their taxes, etc. Get over it!

The bottom line is that writers of nonfiction, as Frey claimed his book is, need to be as accurate as possible about the detail of the events written about. Oprah should not have to do background research on the validity of Frey's book; that is his editor's job. I, too, thought she was rather harsh on Mr. Frey, but he is a prime example of how people will do whatever it takes to make it, and that includes umitigated lying.

I have not watched a single episode of oprah ever since the James Frey incident!
I hope that bitch burns in hell! Mr. Frey exaggerated/changed three things in his memoir, 1) the amount of time he spent in jail—no relevance to the story whatsoever 2) a drug free root canal—ok sure…had some dramatic impact…but overall has no relevance to the purpose of his story and 3) how his girlfriend killed herself…which was only to help protect the identity of her and her family….which only show the compassion he has and what a truly changed person he has become. I loved every page of "a million little pieces', it was fantastic and I think James Frey is an amazing person for sharing his story which I'm sure has helped a lot of people. I think Oprah should be ashamed of herself for the way she treated James Frey….she built him up and made the book as high profile as it was, all the while claiming it was a great story of addiction and recovery and then tore it down and turned her back on it when it became inconvienient for her to support the book and James Frey.

I will never watch her show again…in my opinion she showed her true colors that day.

I have to agree with Nan. I think Oprah is above all things a corporation. The whole thing smacks of Oprah's usual, 'holier than thou' attitude to morality. The fact is that the book was inspirational to some, and a ripping good yarn to others and that's enough. That whole show was a stunt for Oprah to clear her own name and place the blame squarely on someone elses shoulders. Heaven knows she's a powerful media figure and she could have taken the responsibility to fact check the book herself before she endorsed it. But she didn't, and then she ripped someone else a new one for failing to do what she didn't do herself. It's pathetic- clearly a case of a media-savvy popularity addict saving her own skin.

I used to talk to a lady who had been a guest on Oprah's show, and she said that Oprah was the BIGGEST bitch that she had ever met in her life!
As soon as they cut to commercial, Oprah started bitching and complaining, and starting scolding them for their problems! She also felt that she had to remind everybody that she was the star of the show, and that no one was going to take any air time away from her.

It's about time someone called Oprah out about her behavior. Oprah has gotten way too full of herself, is a big grandstander and is always basically saying "Look at me and how wonderful I am." She's out of control. She and her enormous ego need to come back down to earth. She loves to rip people apart and I'm sick of it. Just like that time she ripped apart that store that wouldn't let her in to shop after they had closed. They were trying to get rid of the customers that were already in there, they had to set up for a special evening event, they were closed and they didn't know or care about who she was. They were closed. So of course she played the race card and bad mouthed the department store. Who does this broad think she is?!

I am so glad someone from Frey's camp spoke out about that incident. I love O, I think she means well, but I think that show was a testimony to her needing to be careful with her fame. She belittled him in order to save her name and reputation. I loved the book, but even if I didn't, anyone with class would know better than to rip someone to shreds for the advancement of their own reputation. I think she should be embarrased for her actions.

so well! 0prah knew the whole thing. I knew i was reading a fiction well written fantastic
amaze book and i could not put it down! loved it. But i knew it was "fiction!"
Lilly did not hang herself but miss 0prah hung James Frey.

I notice it that people is so afraid to speak out about miss 0prah…..probable it is a
kind of "superstition!" In fact these bloggers surprise me! Though

i really felt for the guy - it's my understanding that he wanted it out there as a novel, not an auto-bio - oprah did tear him apart, i was surprised - still, if you haven't read the book, do so, it changed my life in helping me to understand addiction and to answer (as good an answer as I'm gonna get) some horrific questions as to why my brother killed himself. james frey got screwed by his publisher
