Listen To This: Every Once In A While

Filed under: Listen To This > Emmy Rossum

emmy.jpg

We're always a bit worried when an actor attempts to "transition" into the music world, but Emmy Rossum is the real deal!

She has released an EP on iTunes - a precursor to a full length album in the fall - and it's good. The songs are really good!

Rossum began her career in opera and learned to play piano before she was five. She also wrote every single song she recorded, and in many ways she has more cred than Avril Lavigne.

Emmy's sound is angelic, which is right up our alley. But it's not too pretty. The songs are meaningful, especially Slow Me Down, which we've been listening to non-stop since we bought the EP on iTunes.

If you like Imogen Heap, then you will love this. It's totally a similar vibe to the Brit's exquisite song Hide & Seek.

Enjoy Rossum's Slow Me Down below, then CLICK HERE to listen to more songs from Emmy!

    16

I'm sorry, but that is a carbon copy of Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek". There is no originality to that what so ever. She should find her own style and not copy.

    24

this is total bullshit…this is a imogen rip off completely, from the lyrics to the looping of tracks to the crack in her voice. so really, she's just like avril.

  31. emilie says – reply to this

    31

    LOVE it!

  32. chicky says – reply to this

    32

Umm, is it just me or does this chick's song sound overexposed like paris hilton's crappy music, they can't actually sing so they overdubb everything so it sounds different. I've never heard of her as a singer or as an actor, she should go back under the rock she crawled out from.

  33. Drea says – reply to this

    33

I love love love this song. Thanks Perez!

  35. Audrey says – reply to this

    35

She's got nothing on Imogen. The only similarity between them is that they both have vaginas.

I say boo, let Imogen kick ass and just give up, Emmy.

  36. Melanie says – reply to this

    36

    sounds a little like enya..

  37. sad but true says – reply to this

    37

I can tell she has talent and I'm sure there are really good songs on her album. However this is not one of them. I HATE it.

  38. misscherie13 says – reply to this

    38

I love emmy rossum! She was so perfect in phantom of the opera, and the music for her new cd is very fresh and different from the other brainless songs on the radio right now. Her music at least means something, which is more than what most popular artists right now can say. Just because she's different doesn't mean she's bad.

  39. kate says – reply to this

    39

this is definitely not emmy! what i mean by this, is you can tell that she sat down with the record execs and asked what would sell, the convo prob went something like this:
"well, emmy, see we don't want any granola singersongwriters and we don't need anymore edgy suicidal poets, but this imogen heap woman, with her breathy and technopop is really hip."
    "ok"

don't get me wrong, i love imogen, but this is just a crap imitation of her. and it sounds so electronic, like we know emmy is talented, but it doesn't come off at all from this computerized ripoff.

  40. Sromeo says – reply to this

    40

This pic looks nothing like her

  41. adam says – reply to this

    41

    she's like fake enya.

  42. apyknowzitall says – reply to this

    42

That doesn't even look like her. She does have an awesome voice. Phantom of the Opera anyone?

  43. Wonky says – reply to this

    43

    wow, that was truly amazing…

  44. C-Mo says – reply to this

    44

this is way to similar to Imogen Heap's song, at first I didn't realize there was a differnce…hopefully the rest of her songs are a bit more original

but all said, imogen is great. so yes her song is catchy…just not really her own

  45. Amy says – reply to this

    45

Wow. That is such a blatant (and poor) Imogen Heap rip-off. I didn't think anything could make me dislike this girl (who has been in what, exactly, other than that one movie?) more than her fake, sickly-sweet, one-foot-in-the-air red carpet poses, but this music did it. I can't wait for her to go away.

  46. me says – reply to this

    46

Horrible song and really terrible, horrible, craptastic voice. wow! she sucks more than Mandy Moore.

  47. LB says – reply to this

    47

Oh dear god that is crap

  48. nicole says – reply to this

    48

dude i saw emmy and perez eating dinner out the other week. perez is only doing a favor for his "friend" who is trying to be a musician…she sucks and her music is worse!!! when i asked emmy how she made it in hollywood at such a young age…she said, "when i got on the elevator it went straight to the top!" dumb whore!

  49. sandrafuckingsou says – reply to this

    49

i love imogen, and this just sounds like a watered down version. girl's got talent though

  50. aknarab says – reply to this

    50

it's way too similar to imogen heap for me. imogen is in her own playing field and i am just not digging this track.

  51. annie says – reply to this

    51

emmy should go back to singing appalachian folk tunes like when i first heard of her in the movie "songcatcher." she duets with dolly parton!!!!

  52. Dano says – reply to this

    52

156th (really - who wants to be first…)

  53. Yahhh says – reply to this

    53

What an Imogen Heap rip off. The little whore.

  54. CSJ says – reply to this

    54

It sounds more like ENYA than Imogen Heap!

  55. elloid says – reply to this

    55

    This sounds like Enya.

  56. Aspen says – reply to this

    56

This is actually all her voice on this track. Every "layer" of voice is hers. She did a lot of musical experimentation on this album to really push voice and see where it could go. Good luck with this one Emmy.

  57. shut up TURD says – reply to this

    57

    @ #52 - Dano says:

156th (really - who wants to be first…)

    Uh…ME!

  58. MD says – reply to this

    58

    thank you, Perezcious…you kinda rock

  59. Peter says – reply to this

    59

Hear me out, but wasn't Emmy Rossum a singer, starting from the age of a child, before she ever broke out into acting?

  60. lucy boo boo says – reply to this

    60

it's missing an orchestra though- totally better with one- she sounds wonderful

  61. lex says – reply to this

    61

dude, her voice sounded weak and strained and shrill in phantom and this…this is like a super '80s style enya rip-off! seriously, with all the effects and shit that has been used to manipulate her voice, you can't even tell what her voice really sounds like (though, as I said, what I have heard of just her voice has been kinda shitty anyhow). moreover, I think someone else said this already and I totally agree–unless you are a 45-year old soccer mom, who's really gonna listen to that shit on the radio?

  62. yasmin says – reply to this

    62

So I was listening… yes i like this song… hmm nice tune..nice… and the i heard 'getting nowhere'
    I froze.
THAT sounded exactly like Imogen Heap.
    Crazy scary.

  63. Becca says – reply to this

    63

"If you like Imogen Heap, then you will love this." What? No, Perez. Love you, and I'm with you most of the time, but NO. This is a total carbon copy of Imogen. Not to mention the fact that this style seems so unnatural for her. The album cover gives off a completely different vibe.

  64. lucyJAY says – reply to this

    64

duet with imo would be amazing

  65. Weeniedog says – reply to this

    65

Wow this really sucks. Totally retarded lyrics and yes, it's a crappy rip-off of Hide and Seek. So cliche, Emmy.

  66. Trina says – reply to this

    66

This song sounds NOTHING like "Hide and Seek" and for anyone who thinks it does, must be deaf… This song doesnt even compare on any level to "Hide and Seek" or Paris Hiltons breathy music for that matter. As for some people saying they have never "heard" of her, sure she might not be an A list actor, but her performance in Phantom of the Opera was breathtaking and the fact that she sang the original songs in the movie, makes it even better. She picks her parts carefully and doesnt take any role offered to her, shes a classy young woman with a lot of talent and I personally love the song. Its completly different than anything that has been on the charts lately, and this world needs some change. Even Justin Timberlakes songs are starting to sound the same. Originality at its best!!

  67. Ragamuffingrrl says – reply to this

    67

I've loved her since Songcatcher, but I'm not sure I get this sound. It's almost too polished … she doesn't sound real.

  68. Danny says – reply to this

    68

Does anybody have a download link for her 3 songs? I can't find it in limewire

  69. ali says – reply to this

    69

ugh. this is horrendous. a VERY poor man's imogen.

  70. thevillagejoke says – reply to this

    70

    omg
    what?
somone should call imogean heap & tell them they have a thief stealing their style.

  71. telotha says – reply to this

    71

You are so right on Perez!! I cannot get enough of that song, slow me down. I even put it on my myspace profile.

  72. Jimmy says – reply to this

    72

"It’s totally a similar vibe to the Brit’s exquisite song Hide & Seek."

    Which also means RIPOFF

But she's so hot that I don't care. Song is great though.

  73. smt says – reply to this

    73

yeah, she sounds great but it's a little too much like Immy. Did she produce it or something? Cause if she didn't she should ask for royalties or something!

  74. A i d e e says – reply to this

    74

    Mmm… goob trying…
    It sounds like Imogen Heap

  75. Lola says – reply to this

    75

    I can't stand it! It's too… whimsical.

  76. Ainsley says – reply to this

    76

That pretty much sounds EXACTLY like Hide and Seek.

  77. babooshka says – reply to this

    77

WOW this is REALLY GREAT. Good for her….she sounds genuinely talented and not to mention she is gorgeous! I wish music would go more in this direction than hip-hop crap!

  78. V says – reply to this

    78

She sounded better in the Phantom…I loved the movie

  79. Jewel says – reply to this

    79

Hmm. It does sound like Imogen Heap.
I wouldn't know what her voice sounds like, I didn't watch Phantom of the Opera.
I can't say if I think it's too "polished" or if it's not her "style". (How can you say it's not her style? Phantom was a MOVIE, but not necessarily her style of music anyway.)

Regardless of all these things, I LIKE the song. That's all. :)

  80. ellie says – reply to this

    80

    sounds a lot like enya

  81. raeberac says – reply to this

    81

I love imogen heap so as you said i sooooooo love this! Im so glad she didnt go in the pop direction. that song is sooo beautiful.
    Thanks perez!

  82. Sarah says – reply to this

    82

I like her sound…something different and she has a classy public image.

  83. perez is an idiot!! says – reply to this

    83

Perez you're such a fucking idiot!! Emmy was a singer first, very well brought up in opera and studied it her whole life. Then she got into acting. Do some research first, oh, wait…that would make you a true journalist and we all know that's not true!!

  84. blah blah says – reply to this

    84

NO ONE CAN BE COMPARED TO IMMI.
seriously don't ever say anything like that again.
way out west comes close with don't forget me. thats it.
    LOVE YOU IMMI!!!!

  85. jeannine says – reply to this

    85

Just beautiful I love it I listened to all three songs and the third called lullbye made me think of my daughter and how much I love her. Thanks Perez for the listen.

  86. Plouffe says – reply to this

    86

i loved it, dont really care if its close to imogen, whom i love also. both great voices, and if shes writing her own stuff, more power to her. go emmy

  87. Lauren says – reply to this

    87

ohhh SO good. sounds so much like immy! LOVES it

  88. tracy says – reply to this

    88

    she should marry moby
they would make a good musical couple

  89. Nicole says – reply to this

    89

This song in particular reminds me of the kind of music Enigma and Enya put out. She has a beautiful voice, but the type of music she created for this album is best consumed in small doses

  90. jahzara says – reply to this

    90

WOW..what a BEAUTIFUL picture!!! Who is the photographer?

  91. lolila says – reply to this

    91

    GORGEOUS PICTURE!!!

  92. Ginger Sinatra says – reply to this

    92

    Perez,

This sucks. It sounds like techno air-blown popcorn, bubblegum, shite. Pull your head our of your rather plump, hairy ass. When are you going to support people who play REAL music? WHEN? Dumbass.

  93. B says – reply to this

    93

SIMILAR to Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek"?!!!! It is a total copy of that song. She stole it. No originality.

  94. sanityrules says – reply to this

    94

Where have you beeN? Under a rock, perhaps? Emmy Rossum has been more than an actress for some time. She sang in the movies, "The Songcatcher" and "Phantom of the Opera". So I do not understand your surprise that she is transitioning from acting to singing.

Gee, the Perez does not know it all after all!!

  95. Rachel says – reply to this

    95

Doesn't matter whether she studied Opera her whole life or whatever, Perez is clearly stating that she had a big time acting career before she tried to break out as a musician. When I heard this I immediately thought of Enya, then Imogen. I like the song, but want to hear something more original. As for attacking Perez for not being a true journalist . . . if that's what you really care about then why are you even reading this gossip blog. There's obviously a difference between blogs and periodicals.

  96. Jay says – reply to this

  99. Karolinka says – reply to this

    99

    What a beautiful voice!!!

  100. j says – reply to this

    100

She said she recorded 150 different parts for this song, but it all just sounds computerized…
and as for those comparing this to her performance of "The Phantom of the Opera," that wasn't much better. They should have had a real broadway actress do it or someone with the right timbre of voice. Hers was too poppy.
