I don't know JLo or Marc Anthony enough to make an informed decision about whether or not they are diva-ish. I do know they likely worked incredibly hard to get this story to the screen and although its not perfect, at least the story of Hector Lavoe is out there and a new generation can get to know his music. If the Latin community wants a movie done about Hector from a perspective other than his widow's it should stop complaining, get off its ass, and get one made.

The failure of this film will be the final nail in the coffin of what was left of her "acting" career. She made a couple of good movies, she was very good in "Salena" and "Out of Sight" but that's about it. The latin comminity would never except this film for a lot of reasons, mainly becuase it stars this couple who are somewhat resented by some, not all, but some. And also because AIDS is still such a stigma is the latin community, it might as well be 1982 all over again. They don't want to see a film that brings it to the forefront when talking about one of their own.

Marc seems semi nice. I feel bad that the movie isn't doing so well…I guess it was in limited release, but still. Why are they attacking the movie? Details!

Jennie Lo lost my respect after her fashion choices, and her movies that are just…blah. I thought she was talented after Selena, but I guess she was playing a character very similar to herself…not a stretch!

J-Lo should have no played the leading femal role. She appears horrific with her fake New York puerto Rican accent. J-lo is too cheezy, I am use to seeing her in these corney gily films like Maid in Manhhetten. She doesnt fit the part for this movie.

First of all for being released In Limited Theaters only 530 theaters were playing it made 4 million dollars that's not bad for a limited release it actually did pretty well and second of all Jennifer Lopez did an amazing job portraying Puchi her character in the movie her second best performance the movie was beautiful it was inspirational had amazing music scenery was great they did an amazing job telling the life of Salsa King Hector Lavoe Marc anthony is a great actor and Jennifer lopez did amazing she should be nominated for best actress i am telling you she did great!

To those people comparing "El Cantante" to "Ray" and "Walk the Line", you must be out of your minds. "Ray" and "Walk the Line" were amazing movies well deserving of the awards and success they got. Mr Fox became Ray Charles, and Joaquin Phoenix became Johnny Cash. Even if you don't like Ray's and Cash's music, these movies were great.

Please, don't dare to compare Jamie Fox's and Joaquin Phoenix's amazing performances to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. They're not even close.

People have to understand the viewpoint in which the movie is coming from~ HIS wife. Her story is going to be much different than a documentary. It is more focused on his personal life. Unfortunately you cannot make everyone happy. I look forward to seeing this movie. I have always been a fan of Jennifer, she is a good actress she just needs another role that will show it. That article was dead on. I went to see this mess of a movie hoping it would be an insightful film about what he had to deal with from the industry and at home….it was neither. With all the work that went into this pic I expected a lot more than what I got. I guess JLo didnt learn much from her first film "Selena" which in a way was a very heartfelt film about a latin icon. This new crap is a self indulgent pile of sh*t. They really blew it and should be ashamed. Exploitive is the only word for this JLo/Anthony vehicle that never should have been made, at least not the way it was made. Dont waste you $$.

I went to see the movie on Friday, and thought it was GREAT!!!

I also believe that the performances by Marc and Jennifer were honest, and actually exceeded expectations.

Of course, Willie and the rest are going to have problems with the movie. They are also portrayed as JUNKIES. The difference is that Willie is alive, and probably doesn't want anyone to see him as his former self, but they should have thought about the fact that the truth would one day be seen as they were being destructive, not decades later.

As a Latino, I was PROUD to be in that theater, and glad that Jennifer and Marc decided to do such an honest profile of the life of the great cantante de los cantantes, Hector Lavoe.

He did abuse drugs, and did die of Aids, what was the movie supposed to show?

It absolutely showed that he was a great singer with a conflicted personal life. I don't see where the problem is.

I saw on Escandalo TV the other day some clips from the last few weeks he was alive, and the movie actually showed him in a better light.

This movie is a good thing, and what people are not realizing is that it is the envy and the negative commentary that are bad for Latin culture not J-lo or this movie.

That author of the article is putting too much emphasis on the negative publicity. Even though the movie is not well reviewed when it comes to the directing and script, amongst the majority of critics, Lopez is getting pretty rave reviews for her performance.

Willie Colon and his bandmembers are also taking advantage of the situation by trying to stir up controversy and publicity so they can promote their upcoming tour in "tribute" to Lavoe (which would not happen if the movie wasn't made to begin with).

El Cantante also did pretty damn good with $3.25 milliion opening weekend, playing in just $542 screens, included in the top 5 per screen averages.

If it's a White woman, no one seems to care…like Julia Roberts when she took her husband away from another woman and Drew Barrymore and all her bpyfriends and multiple marriges and engagements…that's just fine. Anyway, the point here is that Jennifer Lopez focused on a project that was close to the Latino Community. It was a project that real Salsa lovers will love. He was an amazing artist and also a junkie. If these people want a comprehensive look at the mans music, than go watch a fucking documentary. There are people who clearly have no idea what narrative film is supposed to be, you have to pick the most dramatic and entertaining aspects and make the movie around them so that not only fans of Hector Lavoe will see it, but fans of movies and J. Lo, and Marc Anthony will see it. I didn't give a shit about Johnny Cash before "Walk The Line", I saw it because I like Joaquin Pheonix. I don't know who Hector Lavoe is, I'm gonna see the movie because it looks entertaining. I have seen the movie and it isn't perfect but it is still a great movie that depicts a history in latin music that a lot of people don't know too much about. How many latins out there today know who Hector Lavoe is? Thanks to this movie, now I know and I plan to go out and buy some of his records because the man was an incredible musician who led a very interesting life. The latin community should go out and support this film and support artist like Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. We shouldn't hate, but celebrate that we latin artists who are willing to put their reputations on the line to put films out there like EL Cantante.

With Ben she was Miss White Girl who cooks and loves to stay at home. With Puerto Rican Keebler Elf Mark Anthony she's suddenly this dignified Latin Entertainer/Diva. I feel sorry for her because she's not very good at anthing she does! She can dance, but is not awesome. She can sing, but not that good. She can act a little, but will NEVER win an Oscar. She's good looking, but not beautiful. She has a body that's out of proportion, her perfume stinks, her JLO line sucks and all of her movies blow! I own the very first CD she made. Those were very sexy, good songs. Obviously written for her by P Diddy's team. I noticed then that her voice was average at best. She jumps from one relationship to the other because she always needs to be somebody's girlfriend! She's addicted to getting married. Poor thing can't even have babies! So see, she's not great at anything!

I am a LATINA, I saw this movie and I thought Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez were great in it!! I think she is always great in Latina roles not playing a freaking italian like she always does, and Marc was great as well especially his voice. He captured Lavoe perfectly, I saw it at the Arclight in Hollywood and everyone there loved is as well so I dont understand the bad reviews

Many examples, but to stick with the Latin theme; Selena was beautiful and she could sing very very well! She didn't try to be anything other than what she was! Salma is pretty, has (had) a killer body and she can actually act! Paula Adul (although not Latina) might be a nutcase but the woman used to could dance! This is not fair. You write this but you don't say what they said. The criticts are about the portrait of the drug used, but Hector Lavor was a heavy duty drug addict. If they would've made a fairy tale about it it would've been wrong. I don't think the movie portraits Puchi (JLo's role) in a positive way. She was a bitch who did a lot of cocaine and party with him. Neither you come out thinking she was a good mother. If people are saying that, they didn't see the movie. The movie is good, but it's an artistic expression of the reality. No movie is a 100% accurate.

This is the first time I have ever posted here, I have been around watching and reading. I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but really a lot of the other posts seem to stem from jealousy. We hear about the good and bad of celebrities because the media is not really into caring about the privacy of actors, musicians and other type of celebrities but then again that naturally comes with the territory of being a celebrity. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have made their choices, their mistakes but have done very well for themselves; I saw the preview for this movie and it seems well very interesting and like it would be fun to watch.

I have seen most of her movies except gigli; just wasn't interested in the plot line but her other movies were sweet like The wedding planner and maid in manhattan.

Well I hope nothing for the best for them both..

Perez your site is interesting enough; there are a lot of comments I don't necessarily agree with but some are absolutely hilarious…

What is really sad, is that the people who were hired to work on the film,
as actors and/or consultants, are the ones now knocking it. They would never in a million years have been in ANY movie. I guess it's true, no good deed goes unpunished.

It amazes me all the comments being made about this movie, you have to first watch the movie to then criticized, this is a great movie, and seeing it made it more of a reality not just of what a Puerto Rican singer went through, but of what a lot of starts (today) still go through and like to hide, Hector Lavoe was who he was. He was a true and genuine singer, but he led a life left to be desire, he wasn't proud of who he had become but there was no changing him, he continued to sing for all of those that loved his music, he still is heard out there today. What Marc and Jen did was to bring out what people wanted to see, the life of Hector Lavoe, it may not have been something nice to portray about him, but it was told by someone close to him for more than 20 years, they came as close as they could to bring you Hector Lavoe. I applaud them, I saw the movie and I have to say it was a great movie, again how can we sit here and criticize when we ourselves have not taken the time to educate ourselves about who are the artists we like to see on movies or hear in radios, (as to who they really are).
