"In the upcoming election my hope is that we find a leader who has the ability to understand, work with and effectively negotiate with other world leaders as well as fix the severe problems we face at home. The United States needs to maintain its ability to be the most admired, respected and powerful nation in the world.
There are so many important issues at stake in this election, it’s difficult to pinpoint just one that’s the most important to me. I am very concerned about the environment, the ongoing war in Iraq, health care (especially the future of stem cell research) and many other domestic issues.
However, since the upcoming Democratic debate will focus on LGBT issues, I’d like to discuss my feelings on why gay marriage is an important issue to me and why I think it should be supported by all the Democratic candidates.
Bill Clinton promoted tolerance and acceptance of the LGBT community. He appointed the first openly gay senior level officials to the White House staff and fought for equal rights for LGBT Americans. His attitude and policies helped to lift the veil of shame that so many LGBT individuals have felt all their lives and helped pave the way for millions of LGBT Americans to begin to fight for equal rights.
Over the years, the amazing progress the LGBT community has made has started to crumble. Many politicians have said that allowing gay marriage would somehow threaten the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman, essentially saying that allowing gay people to marry tarnishes the institution of marriage. The underlying message is that gay people should be treated differently, aren’t worthy enough to share the title of marriage, and that the love shared between gay couples is somehow less than the love between straight couples.
My main fear is for the LGBT youth in America and around the world who, for one reason or another aren’t able to cope or can’t escape their prejudice cities, towns and communities. I often wonder how many teens have committed suicide because they’re struggling with their sexuality and feel the incredible weight of the shame their community puts on homosexuality? I am hoping in this election we have Democratic candidates who feel as passionately about this issue as I do.
By not supporting gay marriage we are teaching our youth that gays aren’t equal to straight people. We are teaching them that what they feel is wrong. What a terrible message to send to impressionable children and potentially devastating message to all the LGBT youth who may be living in an isolated environment struggling with being gay and feeling they have no hope and no one to turn to.
I understand this issue isn’t going to win an election for the Democrats and may even cost votes, but supporting gay marriage is the right thing to do. I think that the Democratic Party needs to rise above the past and help all people have the right to marry whomever they choose. I want to live in a place where no one has to feel ashamed of who they are, who they choose to spend their life with and a place where everyone can make the choice if they would like to get married. Now is the time for our Democratic candidates to stand strong and fight for what’s right."

I think a lot of people are ranting about things they don't know about.
First of all, marriage is not a religious thing. For thousands of years, marriage was a way to consolidate fortunes among families and to protect the assets of families.
The church used marriage to establish rules so that a family fortune could be protected (eg. so that children out of wedlock could not get any of their father's money).
So the church has always used marriage to do politics.
It was only in the nineteenth century, with the Romantic period in literature and poetry, that they started to talk about love and romantic feelings in a marriage.
I live in Belgium where gays have the same rights as straights, including marriage. There is no separate gay marriage, just marriage for all. There is a strict split between the civil institution of marriage, which grants you rights in society, and a marriage in a church. Of course gays will not be able to marry in a church. But at least in society they have all the rights.
As for those who always wave their bible, there is a lot in the bible that we don't accept anymore. For instance, the bible talks about how to treat your slaves right! That means implicitly that in the bible they would accept slavery! The bible is thus also a document of a certain time and has to be understood in a certain way, but not always litterally.
The bible is alright as an inspiration to live a better life, but it should never be used to discriminate against others or deny them rights in civil society.

Since then, we've made numerous leaps forward in genetics, and it might be a difference, but it's not a perversion.
The idea that a child has to be raised by a man and a woman to be normal is, quite frankly, ridiculous. I have a few friends raised by gay couples. I was raised by a man and a woman. There is no difference between us, except that I had to learn about homosexuality and tolerance while they always have been. Also, none of them are gay. I think that when it comes to gay marriage it should be on the ballot for the people to vote, not the politicians. For instance, on the 08 ballot when everyone goes to vote. But the bottom line is,.. if it comes out that the majority of the people are against it,.. then it should be left alone. I personally am against it!!! Yes Lance made some mistakes and didn't really research everything thoroughly, however the core of his blog is very much correct and needs attention.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transexual (GLBT) issues are very important and a great issue to consider when voting. The GLBT community still faces much discrimination and even danger. There have been gay bashings happening even here in Canada recently. People seem to think that just because you are gay that they can ridicule you and even use violence to get their message of hate across. Being gay is not a choice and people really need to stop believing that. Who at a young age, say 11 or 12, after being teased about being feminin for all of their lives, would decide "hmmm. I think that I like men….even though I've never really thought about sex much. I think that when I start having sex I want to have it with men. I don't care if everyone in the world thinks that it's discusting and wrong, I want to do it. I've never really heard about gay people except in the bible where apparantly it says it's wrong and that I'll rot in hell for choosing that path…hmmm…sounds like a good idea! oooo I bet it will piss my family off too….I'm not even allowed an earring or I'll get kicked out….I'm sure mom and dad would love to know that I've decided to have sex with men!! Yah they'll love that!" I don't think that that is what goes through your head…nope you have feelings that you can't understand, then you realize you're attracted to men, not woman, then you fight it for a long time, and finally, god willing you accept that you are gay and that it's totally ok and you're not some freak of nature. If you don't, and you let the hate that surrounds you get to you, then you will be a very unhappy person, and may even commit suicide, like so many GLBT youth do. It is sad to know that people can't see that the hate they spread is killing youth. I don't understand how someone who claims to be religious, christian or otherwise can judge someone and spread such hate, when the core teachings of all religions is love. Love thy neighbour. As for the bible, it was written by men, years after the fact. Regardless we know that you believe it is the word of God, and that is fine, however if you've read the bible carefully, you'll realize that it contradicts it's self, in the old testiment it says that you should practice an eye for an eye, but in the new Jesus says turn the other cheek. In the old it says that women should be shunned when they are menstrating and that men should wear only certain fabrics and keep their hair in the specific way. It also says that eating any shell fish, so shrimp, lobster, etc is an abomination. These rules were presented in the same book as any rules concerning homosexuality. They are now ignored and said to not apply anymore according to the new testiment. So why are some and not others? These rules were made mainly for that time to protect the chosen people. they wanted to procreate to make a strong nation. now the notion of procreation is not necessary. if you argue that marriage is primarily for procreation then you must also disallow any sterile heterosexual couples, couples over the age of 55 and couples who do not wish to even consider having children, from marrying.
There are also lots of support in the bible for homosexuality. Search on google and you will find lots of interesting information about homosexuality and the bible.
Regardless of all of that the marriage issue is not a religious issue. It is a human rights issue. GLBT's do not have the same rights as heterosexuals, and that should not be the case. Marriage is no longer only a religious ceremony, you don't need to get married in a church, you don't need to have scripture read. It's as simple as going to city hall and getting a liscense and having a non religious "ceremony," exchanging your vows (usually self written.) We do not expect or even want to force priests, ministers, or rabbis to perform gay weddings. Most homosexuals don't want to be married in the religious sense at all.
To touch on the fallasy that allowing the GLBT community to have the same right to marry as heterosexuals will ruin the world, or ruin marriage, or make everyone stop procreating. What a ridiculous argument. How can an intelligent person think that by allowing people who have been in loving relationships, some for 30 years or more, it will make everyone else stop procreating, or that it will somehow make marriage between a man and woman any less important? Are you so insecure with your relationships that it would affect you if someone else was to recognize their love publicly and legally? I don't really understand that. In Canada, and other countries GLBT marriages have been legal for awhile, but straight marriages haven't changed or diminished. Relationships are still the same whether between two of the same sex or opposite sex.
I don't get the whole lets put this to a vote. If that had of been suggested during the civil rights movement, would it have been the right thing to do? Would people of colour still not have the rights that white people do? How is a minority's rights protected if it's up to the majority to decide? There would be no social progress in that case, our world views would stay stagnant and never change. A lot of injustices would still be happening today.
In closing, I urge you to stop being so judgmental of others, and stop fearing what will happen to you if someone else has equal rights. It won't hurt you or force you to be gay or change your life in anyway. However I hope it does help you to be more accepting and not so judgemental. Don't be the first to cast a stone, cause you're definately not without sin.

dear #166, I think you are completely wrong in saying that Lance made mistakes or didn't research enough. Just because Bill Clinton signed DOMA doesn't mean that he wasn't pro gay rights. He did more for the GLBT community than any other President. In 96 when DOMA passed, Clinton was forced to make difficult compromises while dealing with a majority Republican senate. DOMA gave the decision to define marriage to the states. In fact, DOMA has actually helped the GLBT community in recent history because it has essentially made it impossible for a constitutional ammendment to be passed banning gay marriage.
It's also funny that people use "Don't ask, don't tell" against Clinton. Clinton's goal was to completely lift the ban of homosexuals in the military, unfortunately because of the right-wing uproar he was again forced to compromise with Don't ask don't tell. Prior to Don't ask, don't tell, gay people could be kicked out of the military based purely on rumor or assumption at least Don't ask, Don't tell gave some protection to gays serving in the military.
I think you all need to get YOUR facts right before bashing.
Reading these comments was so troubling and very sad. I really feel sad for such ignorant people. I have a degree and am far from ignorant and I'm also a lesbian. We never asked for a church wedding. I could really care less about a priest or whatever marrying me. I just want the 1100+ rights that come with government recognition. All you "Christians" out there, keep talking. How can everyone overlook the obvious? Just because I may have feelings that I am an alien does not make me an alien. Look at examples from nature or from human kind. There are stories of abandoned children being raised by dogs. They "feel" like they are more like dogs than humans, but are they dogs? There are other stories of animals being raised by different species. If there is any question to be pondered, nature tells you by not allowing for procreation between a dog and man or a bird and a cat.
This same proof is available for men and women who think they were made for the same sex. Mankind would be extinct if we fully adopted this as the "norm". This is NOT normal.
IT IS NOT. If you are a man, you may feel like you are a woman or vice versa, but you are not. You don't need the Bible to tell you that. Nature does that on it's own through a process called Natural Selection.

I honestly DO NOT care if gay people get married; what I am really concerned about is whether they can adopt, or not. I believe that a kid who is raised by "two mothers" or "two fathers" will end SERIOUSLY messed up.
