    18

Give me some Jill Scott any day of the week. Beautiful lady.

  19. madam pince says – reply to this

    19

Oh Jesus, she talked to Terry McMillan. Which means the whole interview will be YET ANOTHER rant about TM's gay ex-husband. Jesus. She really needs to get over that. Essence should have hired a real writer to interview Jill.

  20. Katie says – reply to this

    20

Seriously, did you fire a web developer or something? Your site has been falling to pieces - backgrounds missing, borders showing up, pages not loading and/or working, and looking really unprofessional. Do you need a new one?? (My husband does it)! Get on top of it, man!!

  21. ROSANGELA BABY says – reply to this

    21

SHE'S DEFINITELY TALENTED WITH AN AWESOME,SOULFUL VICE!!! SHE'S A LOVELY,FULL-FIGURED BLACK WOMAN..GOT THE CURVES IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES INSTEAD OF BEING STRAIGHT UP BIG SND SLOPPY.

  22. Lamb Chop says – reply to this

    22

I think she's beautiful but I have to wonder why people blast white chicks if they're heavier than a pencil and don't go after the black girls as much. I think this is a much healthier way to look than pin thin.

  23. Cman says – reply to this

    23

Looking fierce - you mean KING KONGISH!!!

  24. nyla says – reply to this

    24

this is why i hate white people. skinnygurlluver, your an ass, go to hell and to those who think essence is a racist magazine, so is vouge, cosmo, marie claire…etc….this mag is for black women who get tired of looking at magazines that don't have anything relative to thier experience…

  25. choley says – reply to this

    25

  28. edward says – reply to this

    28

i hope you are pronouncing mami as mom eee. it could be misconstrued as mam eee. i would be completely offended to the latter.

  29. Latoya says – reply to this

    29

#27 if you hate a whole group of people because of what a few of them or even many of them, write on a website, then you are pitiful. skinnygirlluver is gay who interestingly enough likes women who look like men. go figure. Naya #27 you need to chill out or go somewhere else if you can't take some fool criticizing a celebrity you like. I Jill herself heard this she would probably laugh. Yes, Jill has a cute face and a chubby body so what? There are bony thin girls with ugly faces so Naya grow up dammit! I am so tired of people being so sensitive when there is no need to be.

  30. YEH BOYYYYYY says – reply to this

    30

    FATSO

  31. RJII says – reply to this

Plus, i'm sick of pastie, bottle blond, pink, de-hydrated, fake tits, string hair weaved bitches all the time. Oh, I forgot talentless too.

  32. mean says – reply to this

    32

she is really mean in real life. I used to be a fan until I met her in person. Typical bitter big girl, unfortunately.

  36. Butterfly says – reply to this

    36

It's a nice change to see a real sized woman on a cover of a magazine…better than seeing a strung-out lollipop head any day!

  37. sarou says – reply to this

    37

and by the way she looks fat..ugh

  38. FREEDOM says – reply to this

  43. anono says – reply to this

    43

Perez is an ugly fat homo. That's all.

  44. MM says – reply to this

    44

I think the headline is racist. I am ashamed of you.

  45. a used to be reader says – reply to this

    45

Mami! What a comment! That's a comment made by slave owners. Sure she looks good but couldn't you have used a different word. Maybe you don't understand.

  46. Mel says – reply to this

    46

Mami?!?!?!?!?!? WTF Perez? I realize you like being on the edge but WHY is it necessary for you to go racist? I can say with certainty that Jill Scott is not and has not been a care taker to little snot nose white kids and calling anyone "masser".
If you wanted a reaction well you've received one. I can't get angry for anyone calling her fat, and for those of you who do not know Jill Scott is a multi grammy winner and nominee, played on Pop and R/B stations alike.

If really confronted I already know your reaction you turn even more into a scared, funny hair colored , jerk….just like you did on the Veiw.

  47. Hiiyahhh says – reply to this

    47

Ummmm "mammy" is the racist phrase. I hear Latinos call women mami all the time. Chill out….

  48. rosie says – reply to this

    48

Um, I think you're confusing "mami", a term of endearment in spanish, with "mammy", a stereotype of black women.

  49. Mel says – reply to this

    49

As, I stated b4 Perez wanted a reaction and got one. Jill Scott is not a Latina and although Perez is a part of that culture I stand by my beleifs that he played on these words to "sneak" in a dig while supposedly giving her a compliment.

He is not totally crazy and I know he knew those two words are too damn similar in how they sound…but worlds apart in meaning.

  50. Gwen says – reply to this

    50

"Real women show you…" Oh, right, little whities aren't real women. I'm sick of the term 'real woman', along with 'curvy!' being thrown around. The media invents such fucked up catchphrases.

  51. lynn says – reply to this

    51

As usually Jill looks as beautiful as ever! Oh, by the way most Americans overweight including our children so PLEEZ chill out!!!!

  52. YoMaMa says – reply to this

    52

Neo-Soul is quite frankly a stupid label used to describe what and has always been TRUE R&B. The very souf-filled melodic music that demonstrates Black people's ability to sing and play instruments! Most people under 30 have no idea about this because of how the fusion of hip hop and R&B has all but destroyed the authenticity of both genres. Jill ain't doin nothin new but boy does she do it THE BEST. Love that girl to death!

  53. Proud lady says – reply to this

    53

I personally think you folks (no pun intended) are giving Perez way toooo much credit! I took no offense at all! Actually I was even surprised by his compliment. Typical hateful white folks really get hooked on spreading their hate from a keyboard because they're so Brave, right? But oh well; to each his own, most of you will roast in eternal HELL anyway!

  54. EWWW says – reply to this

    54

ANGELINA JOLIE IS BISEXUAL??? I NEVER KNEW THAT?!?!??!?!

  55. Brian Love says – reply to this

    55

Fuck her. Her skit skat music gets on my damn nerves. The only thing her fat ass deserves is to get punched in her mishapened head.

  56. tanyetta says – reply to this

    56

    sofakinghot!

  57. Carrie says – reply to this

    57

If you think Perez is secretly trying to call her a "mammy" you need to get your head examined. He loves Jill Scott, as evidenced by his post on her new song a couple days ago. READ people.

  58. Ms. Smith says – reply to this

    58

Hey Perez I agree! She does look hot and I love her music. She is so positive and gifted. For those of you who haven't heard her, please open your minds and hearts and be enlightened.

That is, if you can leave your hatefulness alone for a second….

    I read this site everyday!

  59. Kyekyekie says – reply to this

    59

    Much love jill…

  67. Brandin says – reply to this

    67

Wow, I'm just reading some of these awful comments and I just feel sorry for some people. It's obvious at a lot of young people are brainwashed into listening to crappy mainstream music, and the disrespect given to this beautiful and talented lady is just not right. Jill Scott is a true musician who pours her heart and soul into her music, but I guess there are just too many ignorant people out there who can't look past a manufactured image to give REAL music a try. I really really really feel so sorry for all these people who are bashing Jill. They are pathetic.

  68. LOOKS SHE CAN CUT A MEAN FART DOESNTSHE? says – reply to this

  70. bruce says – reply to this

    70

Does anybody else find the magazine racist? What if a magazine caterered only to 'Whites"

  71. Rosetta says – reply to this

    71

All you closed minded muthafuckas need to do your damn homework and research. Jill Scott is one of the baddest mammas out there doing neo-soul. Its not only beautiful, but meaningful music that all of you assholes can relate. She is a voluptuous woman with character and intelligence. So fuck all of you haters!!!!!!!!

  72. west side says – reply to this

    72

@ #55 - Umm, I think by "real women" they mean everyday chicks, not Oprah or Martha Stewart. I've seen this girl in concert. Incredible and incredibly sexy. I couldn't think straight. I had to go home and wake my man up!

Also, Essence came about because mainstream did not feature black women at all. That's not totally the case now but I hope you understand the point.

  73. Harlz says – reply to this

    73

Who in the hell is that and would it kill a sistah to get on the treadmill?

  74. Sinead says – reply to this

    74

Hey Rosetta, there are african american, asian, spanish, african, chinese magazines so?? ALL the rest belong to all ya'll white pple- you hogged evrything awhole lota time ago, this isn't the same thing as racism. 77. georgie says – reply to this

    77

god, you americans are just all so racist! as soon as a black face turns up somewhere its - waaah, she's a monkey/waaah all whites are ugly….grow up!!!
you should come to europe and see for yourselves that a society doesn't have to built upon the difference between black and white.

  78. sad says – reply to this

    78

jill scott is da bomb! people need to stop hating. so what..should all fat people be lined up against a wall and be shot or something? so what if she's heavier set! what does this have to do with the fact that she has an amazing voice and she's super talented? some people are so small minded its pathetic..

  79. glo says – reply to this

    79

Shes great..to anyone that says shes fat.. GROW THE FUCK UP…

  80. Latoya says – reply to this

    80

Essence magazine started in the 1960's, when women of color were never featured or profiled in magazines. It was a black-owned magazine then and filled a need. Now, however, Essence is owned and controlled by a white american company, whites set the agenda for the magazine and it is up to them to alter the format and to make it a bit more inclusive. But in today's media world, there are dozens of magazines that cater to a specific market niche. That doesn't necessarily make them exclusive or bigoted, they are just focusing on a particular market. Gays have their own magazines, as do all the religious groups. Asians have their own magazine for asians and now even muslims have a monthly magazine out called Muslim Girl.

  81. Rusty says – reply to this

    81

Typical Comments. Proving once and for all that white people are the most racist on earth! Of course you like your cave bitches skinny. Duh!

  82. bruce says – reply to this

Latoya, I stand corrected thanks for the info. I never looked at it that way. Mei Culpa!

  83. Andi says – reply to this

    83

It's so sad to see just what people really think of…Black women and plus sized women! I think you can be beautiful at any age, color, size and shape!

  84. Katherine says – reply to this

    84

She looks gorgeous and knows it. Half of that woman's appeal is her confidence.

  85. Dree says – reply to this

    85

    87

Wow, so sorry to read that last post. I have no problem with her shape or size, but treating others poorly will shorten your career. In this day of internet and communications like these, no one can hide from what they really are. Karma oh well, she can sing, I hope she reads this and learns. Shit now im depressed. BB

  92. Sasha says – reply to this

    92

In response to comment #18 aka BOO, first of all, labeling ESSENCE as a racist mag is stupid. I could say the same thing about 'racist' magz like W and InStyle, or YM and others that don't include blacks or latinos or indians or any others of a darker complexion into their monthly issues. Most importantly every ethnicity/nationality has a mag that represents them. There are mags that target white readers, african american readers, asian readers, latin readers, etc…
I am an avid ESSENCE reader and this mag is one of many that represent women of color who are often ignored in a society that proclaims proudly to relate more to a caucasian woman. Just look at television commercials. ESSENCE appreciates the true value of African Americans and commands that our voices be heard too!
