We are hearing very loud rumblings that Cuban dictator Fidel Castro has died, though it could be just a flare-up of the health rumors that have dogged the tyrant recently.

No official confirmation yet, but we will be following this story closely.

Why do people insist on reporting how places 'really are' when they know nothing of it. When your families homes are taken away from you and owned by the goverment, your money ripped from your pockets, your mother is put in a concentration camp, you have no freedom of speech what so ever, and you have to flee to the US from Cuba, THEN you can make a competent argument on the conditions in Cuba.

WOW I am so very surprised at some of the comments I have just read here. Let's start by addressing the praise for Fidel - he is, was and always will be the supreme tyrant of a supressed island nation. NO US embargo has caused the Cuban population to have electric power restrictions, food shortages, medicine shortages as Cuba has a very open door with many other countries that they can trade and buy with if they only had the monetary means as well as the freedom to trade which CASTRO does not allow except to a few designated elite. And lest we not forget a complete lack of personal FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Not likely. There is no question of succession - Raul (baby bro) is just as adored by the communist party elite as Fidel. If he were dead they might keep it hush-hush a week or two while planning the funeral to end all fascist funerals (Evita anyone?) But a whole year of keeping it under wraps?! That's just pointless. He will die one of these days but don't expect a seachange until the old guard (both CP and US refugees) have died out. Only new people, untainted by the revolution will be able to foster real change.

Although I am no fan of Castro's corrupt, repressive regime, it has to be remembered that Castro and his henchmen succeeded in taking control of Cuba due to the abuses of the oligarchy under the equally-corrupt regime of Batista. And that upper-class of Cubans, rather than stay and fight for their country, took the cowardly way out and high-tailed it with their bank accounts to Miami.
