Jennifer - you may want to go back and revisit The Bay of Pigs. It did not fail because the Cubans lost their nerve, it was Kennedy who cancelled the air strikes after they had dropped off all the Cubans that they had trained. The air strike was supposed to knock out Castro's air force. The Cuban's were then left there to die and/or surrender without the help of the US. The US government had recruited these Cuban's and left them there to die. Kennedy also assumed public responsibility and fired members of the CIA.

I also want to add that Castro had most of the Cuban's fooled at what he would do for Cuba. He was greatly supported. He turned into a dictator. And about Cuban's in Cuba hating Cubans in the USA. No. They are just different. It's a different way of life and things have drastically changed during the years. Still have family there, still have family coming over. We don't hate eachother. We just want change and personal freedom.

To # 179–Fidel Castro is a shame to the memory of Che Guevara. Che believed in true communism–as in the phase that involves strong government does not include the leaders living lavishly while their people suffered. Che was an amazing man whose coattails Fidel grabbed onto. If Che had not been killed in Bolivia, I guarantee that Cuba would be a very different place today. I hope sincerely that the Cuban people will have had enough of this bullshit and rise.

I have received dozens of e-mails asking if it is true that Cuban dictator Fidel Castro is dead. I don't have any confirmation that it is true, at least as of Friday night.

I was able to chat with a couple of dissidents who were connected to the Internet today through the American Interest Section, and I asked them if they were aware of the rumors. They were. They said that everyone is talking about it, but they also do not have any way of knowing if it is true or not.

Some newspapers in Spain are reporting that Castro has died and that four of his military aides were arrested when they tried to find out if the rumors were true.

We will continue monitoring all the rumors and news, but will only report when there is some official confirmation from reliable sources about these rumors.

I never implied that the Cubans lost their nerve. The U.S. had planned that when their trained Cubans entered Cuba that the residential Cubans would take up arms alongside them. The U.S. was counting on Cuban support they didn’t receive.

Additionally, Kennedy’s motivations for canceling the air strikes were hardly pure- he simply didn’t want accountability for the invasion because the rest of the world was and is painfully aware of the bullying tactics the U.S. employs.

All of this is not to say that Castro is a saint, but the U.S. has vilified him to the extreme to cover the fact that our relationship with Cuba was strained over oil, which is always at the heart of our foreign relation problems.

The sad truth is that the U.S. has long been, and continues to be, very much like the force we so desperately wanted to separate ourselves from at one point- the British Empire.
