I'll put up a live feed of a police scanner in Miami later if you want, but you'll hear nothing about Castro dying or riots caused by it.

I have contacts in Miami-Dade PD, Coral Gables Fire Rescue, Miami Fire-Rescue, Boarder Patrol, and the USCG; all of them say that there's nothing to report.

The Cuban dictator is rumored to be dead and that has everyone in South Florida holding their collective breath waiting for some kind of an "official" announcement. On July 31, 2006, Fidel underwent a secret operation to cure an "acute intestinal crisis with sustained bleeding," and delegated his duties to his younger brother and Vice President and Defense Minister Raul Castro.

Since then several rumors of Fidel's imminent death have circulated around the World Wide Web, but on Friday they hit white hot even making it to the top of the very popular American news website "The Drudge Report."

The Miami Herald reports that on Friday, teary callers told Ninoska Perez of Radio Mambí they were sure this was it, but Perez, as usual, reminded “The moment will come, but this is not the moment.” The paper reports that many South Florida Cubans jokingly say they hope Castro will make it through another weekend. But underlying such nonchalance is the anxiety of knowing that eventually they'll have to grapple with something huge.

The death was supposed to be announced on Friday afternoon. NBC news is now reporting that U.S. Senior officials said that while there are reports on setbacks in Fidel Castro's health, there are no indications that his death is imminent.

If it is confirmed, I will be in South Beach tonight drinking tons of mojitos, celebrating that in my lifetime I may have the pleasure of visiting the beautiful island of Cuba. A government under different leadership may mean a government with better relations with the U.S. Though democracy may be years away, *reasonable hope* if hours away.

UPDATE 2:37: I'm listening to 610WIOD Miami and Schnitt, who is on the air, has a guest on from the local Fox News affiliate now reporting that the US government is officially denying the report and contacts in Cuba say police are not mobilized nor are police in South Florida.

They cannot report on rumors, because if the rumor turns out to be wrong then they lose their credibility. I am not saying that Castro died or not, I am just saying why sources such as CNN would wait until there is an official announcement from a government or other credible source.

He's definitely dead. I have very close relatives in Miami that work for the federal government and it's definitely being announced. Law enforcement has been preparing for about 72 hours now in anticipation of all the celebrations that will ensue after the announcement. In fact, my one relative was already asked to ready his uniform and be prepared to come in today. Mind you, he works behind the scenes and doesn't normally have to report in his uniform. Sources indicate they are waiting for rush hour traffic and most commuters to get home prior to making the announcement.

Believe me or not, but the announcement is coming. And this is one Cuban who can't wait for the official word to come out.
