Rock On!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayPolitikLGBT

An Iowa district court on Thursday ruled that gay and lesbian couples can legally marry based on the state constitution's guarantee of equal treatment.

Civil unions are not good enough! We need and deserve "marriage." There is power in words!

And, history has shown us that separate but "equal" does NOT work!!!

Why do you always get so excited about these rulings? They ALWAYS get overturned. Face it, homos will never be allowed to marry here in the U.S. Just keep packing fudge in private.

  6. Pgita says – reply to this

Totally agree. How does gay marriage harm straight marriage? Not at all. And all these people who say it is against God's law, well we don't live under God's law, we live under man's law. Separation of church and state.

  18. Disagree says – reply to this

My 2 best friends in the world are a gay couple, however I completely disagree that gays and lesbians "NEED" marriage. Marriage is a RELIGIOUS tradition, and most churches don't support the homosexual lifestyle! Why would you even want to be part of that? Any union outside of the church should be considered a civil union - regardless of the sex of the couple!

  19. JP says – reply to this

I dislike homos and hope they are never able to "marry". I don't care if it violates the laws of some religion, or if it violates some moral codes. All I know is that it violates the laws of biology and nature. Good enough for me.

  20. BACKSTREET BOY says – reply to this

In the words of a great man ….WOO-HOO!!!!!!! I love Homer Simpson…he's so cute. As far as Gay Marriage, everyone should be allowed to marry. F*ck the ass holes who don't think so.

  21. SpiceyICY says – reply to this

Half of the gay people that are happy about this have NO interest in getting married anyway.
What ev. There is still no respect for Family and committed relationships between anyone anymore..this is BULL "YES WE CAN GET MARRIED" uh so are you getting married? "UM NO". so whats the point.

  22. Sarah says – reply to this

Sorry, but I absolutley can NOT approve of that. Gays just don't confirm to the sense of a marriage, so why should they be allowed? This is stupid!

  23. Kels says – reply to this

Why do you have to have the word marriage? I understand that the GLBT community does not want to be different but equal. But the idea of marriage, the meaning of marriage, the product of a marriage with heterosexual couples is different. No matter how you slice it, it is different. I could really care less about other issues…GO GAYS!!!! I like gay people, I love gay people. I also love my marriage, by saying that gay people are married just like me, would demean evereything that my marriage means to me. It is different so why not have a different name…Civil Union.

  24. Mandi says – reply to this

I don't have anything against gay people. But I don't think two men and two women should be able to get married. A marriage is between a man and a woman, end of story. Look at the human body, do you really think that it was meant for guys to be together and girls to be together? Thinking about that is pretty sick.

It shouldn't even be debated. It shouldn't even be in the court system. it's very simple– If you don't believe in same sex marriage.. then don't marry someone of the same sex.
get involved with shit that effects YOU and stop worrying about everyone else.
how does someone else's marriage effect your marriage? the biggest threat to marriage is DIVORCE, not gays!

  30. hungdung says – reply to this

#7 Saldana - of course the USA is going down….can't wait to see it happen!!! Thanks for presuming I'm foreign …and queer… which of course I am neither…..and last time I checked the US wasn't founded by the natives, but by a bunch of immigrants. Idiota de mierda! Y yo se español por viajar mucho y estudiar, no como tu!

  32. SpicyICY says – reply to this

I also agree that marriage is a RELIGIOUS ceremony. #19 is so right If your not accepted by the church what does it all mean? I think CIVIL UNIONS are appropriate because youre asking for the CHURCH permission you are just acting in your RIGHT as a US citizen. I think even hetero sexual couples should have civil unions. Some of them dont believe in GOD or feel the need to be affirmed by the church.

  33. Izzy says – reply to this

SORRY PEREZ-IT DOESN'T MATTER. I'M ALL FOR CIVIL UNION, BUT MARRAIAGE–NO! THAT WOULD BE SENDING A MESSAGE TO OUR KIDS THAT IT DOESN'T MATTER ALL WHAT SEX YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO. If the kid ends up being gay, then that's fine and the parent should love them. However, it would just be way too confusing for kids to just say that having sex with the same sex is normal.

I still think marriage SHOULD be for a man and a woman,as the bible clearly states.Since homosexuality is not accepted in Gods eyes why would he as the creator of marriage want it to be corrupted by accepting a man and a man to be married?I dont think so.Get over it move on and keep your gayness to yourself!!

  51. Daisy says – reply to this

So the only two choices if you are gay and want to marry are Massachussetts and Iowa???? To hell with that! If I was gay, I would move to Canada.

  52. one says – reply to this

hey asshole, you cats have it good! Don't get married, buy a house like normal couples. Power in words? how about power in yourself for a fuckin chance? You don't need a court to tell you who you can and can't love. Do your own thing in your own time old friend. and stop waiting for everybody to aprove, cause i got news for ya, it's never going to happen. some people will never understand and the sooner you stop trying to shove homosexuality down everybody's throat, the better things will get. you're here, you're queer, i don't care and i'll still love you in the morning. Shine on you crazy diamond, shine on.

  53. Pj says – reply to this

I dont give a fuck about marriage. I dont believe that humans are monogomous animals. there are very few on the planet that are. ducks and birds…snails i think…BUT…ALL RIGHTS TO ALL PEOPLE!

  54. paca says – reply to this

hey then maybe there should be "equality" for people who want to marry children , or chimpanzees, or trees. homosexuality is a perversion and a mental sickness caused by abuse , just like lung cancer is caused by smoking. for this reason, ALL MAJOR RELIGIONS VIEW IT AS AN ABOMINATION!!!! gays need to go back in the closet and leave society alone

  58. Jackie says – reply to this

So true, so true the point is not if they get overturned or not. Every step in this direction is what counts. Eventually they will not be overturned. These rulings open it up. Just like in every other civil rights struggle. Should African Americans not have bothered ( and I am mixed) because the rulings got overturned and it was a long slow process? should women? this country is such a mess. We care more about what people do in their own personal lives than about global warning or any of the other insane crap that is going on. Millions of uninsured children, the housing and credit crisis, the insane war in Iraq, having a war criminal as a president etc…etc…etc… seperate is NOT equal! FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. Julie says – reply to this

Omg, i'm so surprised by what i'm reading!
I really think that if any gay couple wanted to get married, then they should be able to! What the fuck are these comments about "god's law" and eveything, this is bullshit! You live in a civilized country, god is not sitting right next to you telling you what are his laws and what aren't, god is not making any law according to what i know…. Leave your god alone and think intelligently for once !

  60. The Truth says – reply to this

JP, get back in your trailer. Sarah, you don't know gay people. How many straight people are divorced? The majority. Biology? Homosexuality is Biology. IT'S NATURE, JUST LIKE IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM.

Disagree, marriage is NOT a religious ceremony under the law. There is no "gay lifestyle". There is no choice. People didn't agree with mixed races getting married. Gay marriage will happen.

Izzy, get over to Iraq. No one will miss you. People don't chose to be gay, and children are not "confused". You're living in the 1950s where you're kind is dead and gone. And THANK GOD FOR LIBERAL JUDGES. THEY'RE THE ONLY ONES WHO FOLLOW THE LAW!

PAUL , lmao, go set yourself on fire at Jesus camp. Your god's law, is not the United States law. The founders already told you people to go fuck yourselves!

  61. The Truth says – reply to this

If the ruling is overturned, it would be put back up yet again. There is no legal basis for not allowing gays to marry. It's over. Move on.

spleen , bestiality is not nature for human beings. Being gay is.

I love how the anti-gay people on here, probably lame failed Rethuglicans, can't wrap their heads around that they lost and this issue is over. Gays will be allowed to serve openly in the military, since they make up it, and gays will be allowed to marry. Civil unions will be first, then marriage. People will see that the world doesn't end because gay people can get married. Many churches already marry gays. Marriage under the law is not a religious institution. You can get married at City Hall.

  62. The Truth says – reply to this

Mel, you do have a problem with gay people, and it's none of your goddamn business! It's not up to you!

  63. Jackie says – reply to this

God Perez. I just read some of these comments! these people are DISGRACEFUL!!! if you hate "queers" and "fags" so much why the hell are you enjoying and reading Perez blog????? You guys are so ignorant and simple mined! You allow yourslef to be distracted by an issue that is not even or should not really BE an issue while the rest of this country and the world is crumbling around you. Your biggoted ignorant comments reveal how truly stupid and out of touch you are. SUCH a lack of compassion.

  69. Jessie says – reply to this

It's amazing how ignorant so many people here are, especially those who are "Christian." Hey idiots–do you eat pork? Eat shellfish? Mix cotton and polyester? Oops, they're forbidden by your God, too! You don't seem to mind THOSE laws of the Old Testament being broken, but homosexuality is still bad, right? Forget that your Saviour's death fulfilled the old laws? I know, you wouldn't want that getting in the way of you being a fucking BIGOT.

It's sad that I'm not even a Christian and I know your faith better than you ignorant pieces of shit do.

  70. Theocrats: American Taliban says – reply to this

  72. lauren says – reply to this

iowa, how freaking random. i had hoped NY would be next…. of course not :(

  73. Kevin says – reply to this

If we distinguish between heterosexuality and homosexuality, and give it two names, is that bigotry? Of course not. That is just common sense. You don't call a lion a dog. Doing so degenerates the English language.

Not calling gay unions "marriages" and calling them civil unions isn't bigotry either.

I am not a holy roller, nor am I a homophobe. I am ALL for gays getting EQUAL RIGHTS. This is what this is all about right?

I see lots of gays wanting to redefine word meanings to suite their lifestyles without concern of anyone else's feelings.

That is bigotry. Being tolerant isn't accepting a person's views or beliefs.

Being tolerant is how you treat the very people you disagree with.

What needs to be done is this.

Have the state ONLY recognize Civil Unions. Those that want to get married can do so under what marriage is known as now. But for the state to recognize it you also have to file for a civil union license or whatever they are calling it.

This way it makes EVERYONE happy. (unless of course you have a chip on your shoulder, or a grudge to take out.. or ideals to push)

  74. Julieson says – reply to this

    finally a constitutionally conscience judge.

I'm from des moines and im very proud to be a part of this stride. its not enough, tho. equal rights not special rights, everyone deserves to be recognized as a happily married couple-regardless of thier parts.

  75. Caroline says – reply to this

yay for Iowa!!! this is awesome

  76. Joe Blow says – reply to this

Gays who want to marry but exclude threesomes and more from marrying are polyphobes and are committing a hate crime.

  77. Crystal says – reply to this

I cannot tolerate ignorance…and its become a cancer on the majority of this country, as we can see by some of these small-minded comments.

  78. Jessie says – reply to this

I also love the "Christians" who love to speak for YHVH–nothing cracks me up like that.

And so many forget a little verse: "Judge not, lest ye be judged." Awww, stupid "Christians." You can't get anything right!

  79. Kevin says – reply to this

BTW, when this first started it was all about gays getting the EQUAL RIGHTS as married couples. I don't think many people disagreed with it. A handful of far wing people did. I think we can ALL agree homosexuals and lesbians (Wow not only do we differentiate between sexual preference, but the male/female version..) should have EQUAL rights.

Redefining a word has nothing to do with having equal rights. That has more to do with attempting to push a moral lifestyle on society as a whole. Which makes you no better than the man that you hate. For example Fred Phelps. That moron wants things HIS way without any concern about any else's feelings. That makes him a bigot.

So Equal Rights YES! By all means. About time.

Redefining a word in order to force society as a whole to accept your beliefs..?

    No. That teeters on bigotry.

  81. Sarah says – reply to this

WTF is wrong with you people and your nasty ass comments about gay marriage! Why do you care? Are you that uncomfortable in your own skin and with your own sexuality that it bothers you that much. Why do you people care what other do with their life and the choices people make. You people talk about God. If you believe in that then you know God made all people the way they are! Just like we can’t help being straight they can’t help being gay! How is it bothering you or affecting your life! You bigots talk about how gays will ruin the world, when in fact it’s assholes like you guys are already destroying this world! Oh and by the way I do happen to be a straight and want to get married someday! And I don’t care it doesn’t effect my life or what I do. Congrats I hope more states do the same!

  82. Jessie says – reply to this

Uh-oh, #75 seems to have forgotten that "separate but equal" isn't truly equal. And you seem to not be grasping that the idiots who spout "HOMOSEXUALITY IS EVIL BECAUSE GOD SAID SO!!" don't know their own fucking holy book from a pile of newspapers. And hey, was for that matter, was it also bigotry when people demanded that marriage be re-defined to allow black people and white people to marry! Oops! Your logic sucks. Try again, this time without your fucking fallacious appeal to common sense.

  83. Tommy says – reply to this

As a Libertarian, I fully support gay marriage to its fullest extent (though I do not believe that a private church should have to perform them, just like they shouldn't have to perform straight marriages, if they don't want to).

    Congratulations to Iowa.

I'm surprised by all of the straight people reading perezhilton.com and posting hateful comments, males and females alike. Males, if you're on a hollywood gossip site (produced by a GAY male), maybe you should reevaluate a few things yourself.

As for the hate mongering females, I don't get it. Gay men and women have fought alongside women for equal pay and equal rights in the workforce and beyond for years, and they turn their back on them now? What's with the hypocrisy in "i love gay people but..?" You can't love them but…gay men and women, under a constitution that is free of someone's religious law, deserve equality.

  84. My $0.02 worth says – reply to this

MARRIAGE IS BASED ON RELIGION NOT STATE LAWS. Gay people should not be allowed to get married. It kills me that gay people who don't believe in God want to get married which is a Christian ceremony. The Bible states homosexuality is wrong, because of that gays shouldn't get married. They should have a union ceremony or something else that is not considered marriage

    /end rant

  85. Kevin says – reply to this

I also want to comment on the Christians. If you are a Christian you are no better or worse than any homosexual on this planet. Everyone is on the same boat. According to the Bible, a sin is a sin is a sin. And since it says we are ALL sinners, that is the great equality measure. All "men" ARE created equal in this way as far as the Bible is concerned.

NO ONE is better than anyone on this planet.

The slippery slope is not taking responsibility for your actions.

  86. whoretta says – reply to this

I'm kind of curious, since I'm not Christian, but is marriage something religious? It's always done at a church so I don't know. If it is, then gays don't have a right. If it isn't, then gays have a right.

  87. Jennifer says – reply to this

Marriage for ANYONE married by a minister, Civil Unions for ANYONE that doesn't give a shit and just wants a fancy party. I think a lot of people on both sides make a lot of noise about this and don't know why.

  88. James says – reply to this

What's next? People marrying animals? Equal rights for those who prefer beastiality! How about marrying your car? Stick it up that tailpipe! Why bother with laws in the first place? Equal hell for all!

  89. Kevin says – reply to this

"367. Uh-oh, #75 seems to have forgotten that “separate but equal” isn’t truly equal."

So do you want me to start calling homosexuals heterosexuals? I mean why differentiate between the two? Because that is how language evolves. Instead of giving one word 10 different definitions.

"And you seem to not be grasping that the idiots who spout “HOMOSEXUALITY IS EVIL BECAUSE GOD SAID SO!!”

I've already spoken to those people in a earlier post. They are no better than the people they hate too. If Jesus were alive right now he'd probably be at a gay bar. (Not saying he was gay… but he tended to hang out in places that people deemed at the time unsavory. You know, hanging out with tax collectors and all ;) )

"don’t know their own fucking holy book from a pile of newspapers. And hey, was for that matter, was it also bigotry when people demanded that marriage be re-defined to allow black people and white people to marry! "

The definition of marriage never mentioned the color of ones skin.

"Oops! Your logic sucks. Try again, this time without your fucking fallacious appeal to common sense."

Your post didn't debunk anything I said.

  90. Jennifer says – reply to this

I am a straight Christian and an Iowan, and today I am VERY proud of my state. My God doesn't preach or teach hate- he is all about love. When my God says Love Thy Neighbor, he isn't only referring to the white heteros out there- he means everyone.
Congrats to all of the same-sex couples out there. I hope this doesn't get overturned.

  91. Kevin says – reply to this

"Marriage for ANYONE married by a minister, Civil Unions for ANYONE that doesn’t give a shit and just wants a fancy party. I think a lot of people on both sides make a lot of noise about this and don’t know why."

Some people on BOTH sides want to force their views and beliefs on society as a whole. Both sides are being bigots.

One sides doesn't care, the other doesn't realize it while they scream tolerance.

  92. Bytch says – reply to this

    Wow……Iowa Rocks!

  93. Chaz says – reply to this

To #87 Kevin… you are right a sin is a sin and we all are sinners. I totally agree. However, why does that make it okay to sin? Christians are to live in the world but not be of the world– meaning we must hold God in higher regard than man. That is why Christians are against sin to begin with, and that is why so many Christians do not like the idea of gay marriage. Our hearts tell us one thing, and our heads tell us another. On this earth all people should be equal. To make it so we have to put aside the law of God. Thus man becomes more important than God. And that isn't right either. It's a difficult conflict for one such as myself.

  94. presley says – reply to this

I think that if homosexuals wanna get married, then the government should not have a say in the matter. Who are they to make judgements??? Assholes if you ask me

  95. Marriage has a definition says – reply to this

Marriage is between a MAN AND A WOMAN. Get your own word. The only reason you want our word is because YOU WANT IT. You are so retarded. More than 50% of marriages end in divorce. Why would you want a word that is associated with divorce so much? Oh, I forgot, you don't care if you're married one day to one guy, get divorced and then marry another guy and so on. So what difference does it make? NONE.

  96. Jennifer says – reply to this

Kevin and Tommy, you guys rock my socks off. Intelligent and informed- what a rarity on this site!

  97. Oso says – reply to this

When will you asswipes get it, nobody chooses to be gay, anymore than they choose to be straight. It just IS. Countless millions of people throughout history have been gay or bi. You can either be intelligent and accept it, or be a moron who thinks you can make it go away by quoting some asshole who wrote some book and suckered your idiot ass into thinking it was God, lol. If that's the God you believe in, then you and your God are both morons. As if the REAL God would be anywhere as narrow-minded and hateful as you, and concerned with such petty ass bullshit. And sorry, but your attempts to make gay sex sound ridiculous and disgusting just don't cut it. Plenty of straight women getting fucked up the ass, and last I heard, they shit too. Even lots of straight guys getting fucked with dildos and loving it. And not all gays are into anal sex, either. What IS ridiculous is people who can't find God within themselves and have to have their beliefs spoon-fed to them.

  98. Kevin says – reply to this

BTW I am ALL for keeping the Federal Gov out of this. I think EACH STATE should be able to decide on what they want to do. And I'd support any candidate that allowed that.

There is nothing wrong with CHOICE. It's what makes the world go round.

FORCING states to adopt something however, I don't jive with. That goes a long with bigotry and intolerance.

  99. JP says – reply to this

    #62 "the truth",

I'm not religious, I'm not morally superior, I have an advanced degree, I don't live in a trailer. Nothing you can argue changes the fact that the laws of nature and biology intended for males to replicate with females. That is how it was intended to be biologically, therefore a deviation from that (such as pummeling another man's sphincter with your cock-n-balls) is unnatural. Don't give me your "it exists in the animal" kingdom argument. Animals also practice cannibalism, eat their own poop, and do various other disgusting things that are indicative of less intelligence.
