Rock On!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayPolitik

ggg.jpg

An Iowa district court on Thursday ruled that gay and lesbian couples can legally marry based on the state constitution's guarantee of equal treatment.

Yes! EQUALITY!

Civil unions are not good enough! We need and deserve "marriage." There is power in words!

And, history has shown us that separate but "equal" does NOT work!!!

I'd imagine marriage should be up to the churches. If a church supports homo marriage then go for it. If a church doesn't support gay marriage they shouldn't have to marry gays. Simple as that. Seperation of church and state should mean gov't can't butt in about such matters. There are many factions of "christian" churches that support gays. Civil unions should give gays the same rights as married couples, as far as gov't rights go. For many marriage is a sacred union between man and woman. Those should not be forced to change their holy beliefs. That's a slippery slope in itself.

I'm not taking either side, but look at it this way. It's has always been equal rights. Can a straight male marry another male? No. Can a gay male marry another male? No. EQUAL RIGHTS. What is confusing or not fair about that?

"To #87 Kevin… you are right a sin is a sin and we all are sinners. I totally agree. However, why does that make it okay to sin?"

If you believe in sin, and are a Christian (some people in here don't believe sin exists) Then no, it's not ok to do such a thing. But we all do it. It's in our nature. According to the Bible ever since the fall of man. Those that are in here belittling homosexuals aren't doing their belief any disservice. Do you think Jesus would be in here calling people fags? Or telling them to go f themselves? I don't think so.

"Christians are to live in the world but not be of the world– meaning we must hold God in higher regard than man. That is why Christians are against sin to begin with, and that is why so many Christians do not like the idea of gay marriage."

Give to Caesars what is Caesars. And you are right. THIS WORLD isn't the world of God according to God. In the Bible God's sense of gov is to give us free will. We reap what we sow. I am all in favor of having the same sort of Gov on earth. Everyone should be treated the same no matter how you want to live. In the end, you, and you alone are responsible for your actions.

Calling people names, and belittling them surely wont win hearts or minds.

There's power in words, but beyond that, Civil Unions don't grant the same rights as marriage, and never could. There's over 1,000 rights that come with marriage. That's why even if Civil Unions are passed first in states, eventually they'll be struck down and replaced with marriage, because Civil Unions aren't equality. Sorry, but America promises freedom for all, and that does include people you don't like, and who aren't "just like you."

Good stuff. I'd invite everyone to examine the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, which legalized mixed-race marriage. The court established a right to "intimate relationships", which would also apply to same-sex marriage. Already legal under federal law.

    1) That senator is not from Iowa
    2) Sadly, it will be overturned by the State Supreme Court
    3) I am fully supportive of gay rights and support a state-mandated union. I agree, sadly, with the 'haters' that marriage is derived from religion. But if a church wants to bless a gay civil union, that's their thing. But their is no reason a state or a country should have a say in whether 2 men or 2 women shouldn't have the same civil rights as a man and a woman married. The benefits are amazing to marraige and everyone should have the right to know and feel those benefits.
    4) I'm LMAO at "think about the children… keep it in the bedroom" Mmmkay. Because all straight couples are automatically better parents than gays? No. As a child, I would much rather have 2 gay loving parents than 2 straight ones that hate each other and beat me. Thanks and go Iowa!!

    110

Ok Perez I understand your gay and that's good for you, but you seriously don't understand what the term marriage is. Marriage flat out is intended for a man and a woman.

    MARRIAGE:
the legal or religious ceremony that formalizes the decision of a man and woman to live as husband and wife, including the accompanying social festivities: to officiate at a marriage.

Please don't insult African Americans by comparing the seperate and but equal thing with gay marriage. Honestly if you want to consider eachother life partners that is fine, but marriage umm no. Not good for the future of our children.

  12. Kevin says – reply to this

    112

The only real solution that doesn't involve bigotry or gov in religion would be to have Gov not recognize marriage. Have it just be a religious ceremony.

If you want Gov rights that couples get, you have to get a civil union.

This makes EVERYONE equal. While not forcing beliefs or lifestyles onto a large part of society that doesn't want it. Which is just as bigot like as them saying "No gays married'

bigotry goes both ways. There should be more respect on BOTH sides.

"There’s power in words, but beyond that, Civil Unions don’t grant the same rights as marriage, and never could."

That is why we need to take the gov out of Marriage. And make them only recognize civil unions.

"Sorry, but America promises freedom for all, and that does include people you don’t like, and who aren’t “just like you."

Right. That also doesn't mean you get to force your lifestyle or belief on society either just because you don't like what other people believe in either.

    It works both ways.

Too many people think tolerance means "to agree with people that think like me"

Tolerance is how you treat those that you disagree with in the first place.

Redefining a word that means a lot to a large group of people because of your own personal beliefs isn't tolerance.

Making new laws to get everyone equal rights and is treated the same is.

    116

#19, you almost have it right. The governement should get out of the marriage buisness all together (you know seperation of church and state), and all unions should be called "civil unions". If a person must get married, any church can do it, and bigot churches can refuse to marry gay people, and good churches can marry them all they please, but the government should stay out of it.

  17. Shannon says – reply to this

    117

People want all people to be able to love and have a government sanctioned status BUT if you want marriage you must change the MEANING of the word. You can't call an apple "apple" if it doesn't fit the criteria. It's not about bigotry, it's about calling something something when it doesn't fit the criteria.

Amy, churches don't own the word marriage. Gays don't want to get married in a bigoted church, and churches can do what they want. 125

I’m not religious, I’m not morally superior, I have an advanced degree, I don’t live in a trailer. Nothing you can argue changes the fact that the laws of nature and biology intended for males to replicate with females. That is how it was intended to be biologically, therefore a deviation from that (such as pummeling another man’s sphincter with your cock-n-balls) is unnatural. Don’t give me your “it exists in the animal” kingdom argument. Animals also practice cannibalism, eat their own poop, and do various other disgusting things that are indicative of less intelligence.

    ——

JP, I very much doubt you have any degree. All studies show homosexuality is part of biology. People don't get married just to have children. Nature created homosexuality to balance nature out. It is not unnatural as straight people do it and animals. We don't live in Afghanistan so what you think doesn't matter.

The problem is the "civil unions for everyone" argument is just theoretical bullshit. Straights will never agree to give up the title "marriage" for civil unions, even if it's only symbolically. There were also many people who thought marriage should be protected from interracial couples too, btw. And biblical justifications for denying interracial couples the right to marry were also used. We've been down this road before, gay rights = civil rights = human rights.

None of the major religions accept homosexuality. Civil unions with the exact same rights as marriage will have to be enough. If you want separation of church and state then call all marriages civil unions and be done with it. I get what is trying to be accomplished, but it won't happen.

    158

#95 - it's not that Christians don't like the "idea" about gay marriage. GOD doesn't like it and He plainly states it in the bible, which was written by men with the Divine Inspiration (God). God hates the sin, not the sinner. We are all sinners by nature. As Christians, we are to repent and turn away from sin. That doesn't mean we'll never sin ever…but, we are not supposed to keep doing the same sin over and over and over and over again. We are supposed to learn from our sin, turn away from it and not do it again. Gay people make a choice of being gay. They make that choice to turn to that particular sin. They can also choose to turn away from it and turn to God. God loves all of us, but He gives us free will. What we do with that free will is up to us.

#122 That definition you posted is a recent one. One that has recently been emended. Most dictionaries give this as the definition.

mar·riage      [mar-ij] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
    –noun
    1.
the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc.

"churches don’t own the word marriage."

Like gay people don't own the word gay. Or marriage. The Church isn't trying to change the definition.

" Gays don’t want to get married in a bigoted church, and churches can do what they want. "

    Hey kettle
    yes pot?
    You are black!1

If a church doesn't allow gay people to get married in their church, that doesn't make them bigoted. You expecting them to change their beliefs in accordance to yours however is.

" Gays should be allowed to MARRY as under the law…blah blah"

Just as gay people have no right to impose their beliefs on anyone that doesn't accept them. Why are you only seeing this down a narrow one way street?

Tolerance goes BOTH ways. Not just to benefit you.
You have to accept and respect the fact that people have different beliefs than you. And treat them as you would anyone else.
That is why I think gays SHOULD have equal rights.

But then again, I am just being consistent..

I love all of your arguments against my earlier posts concerning the FACT that homosexuality is a violation of the laws of BIOLOGY and nature. Claiming that it occurs in the animal kingdom, blah blah blah. As I said, animals also eat feces and each other. They also don't have the intelligence to know that the butthole they are looking at is not the sexual organ of a female. Humans have the intelligence to differentiate. Face it, it is a biological fact that males and females were designed to procreate with each other. And yes, gay marriage DOES affect heterosexuals throughout the country because homosexuals want the same tax benefits as hetero couples. I disagree with homosexuality because it is an unnatural act (unnatural being not as biologically intended). Therefore, I don't want to pay for the tax breaks for gay marriages nor do I want my community to forego the tax revenue that would be given up. Also, gays are grasping at straws by trying to compare themselves with blacks etc. Being gay is not a racial issue, it is a social and lifestyle issue. In fact, it's a sexual preference, nothing more. Get back in the closet, homos.

That isn't what I am doing. I am saying the gov should abolish seeing marriage as legit. EVERYONE gets a civil union if you want the gov to recognize your union. Now if someone wants to get married too on top of that, well let em. But lets not go changing the meaning of the word (which effects not just gays, but all of society)

    " You don’t own marriage. "

No one does. Not even gay people. So why can they change the meaning?

"Your heterosexual and homosexual is not bigoted– what the fuck on Earth does that mean."

I am showing you were in the English language we use two different words to express basically teh same thing. homosexuality and heterosexuality. The difference? One person is gay, the other is straight. Is naming them different somehow trampling over your rights? NO.

" You really are a dumb loser. Straight people get to decide gay rights. It doesn’t concern them. Move the fuck over you idiots. Straight people have gays in every family."

I usually know when someone doesn't have a valid reply. The ad-hominem attacks come. You simply did not understand my post. Now by saying that I am not saying you aren't smart enough to. I don't know why you didn't. But you didn't.

If God made heterosexuals, God also made homosexuals. Who are any of you to argue with that, especially if you claim to believe in God? Scientific research has shown over and over that homosexuality is present across cultures and species.
And by the way, for those people who have commented about how marriage is a "Christian" ceremony, I must point out that Christians were NOT the inventors of marriage. Ever hear of Jews? I think they were doing the marriage thing before Christianity existed. And someone else was probably doing it before them.

Wow…there sure are alot of angry, ignorant people on this thread… Why is it that when asked to explain your opposition to gay marriage, you resort to name-calling? If that's the best you can do, I feel sorry for you all. Here in Canada gay marriage is completely legal, and the sky isn't falling!! Now I'd love to read some intelligent responses, but I know all I'm going to hear is "Hoser Butt-Pirates" or something equally juvenile.

But u kno, men cant write the bible, its impossible.. cuz if men or other ppl wrote the bible, they would actually have different points of views. So tha means theres only one view about everything, wich is God!

If the gays in here that want gay unions to be called marriage would be honest with themselves, they would say they want such a thing, not because of equal rights, but in order to be accepted as society as a whole. It's their way of pushing their beliefs onto society and making them seen as legit.

They paint ANYONE that is against such an idea as a bigot, intolerant, homophobe etc to demean their beliefs. As if anyone can't be legit against homosexual sex. That's it's an irrational fear.

Those that have religious beliefs that it is wrong are not homophobic or intolerant or whatever.

Having said that, those of you that are coming on here calling yourself Christians while saying VILE and WICKED things against people that are probably "better" people than you, you need a reality check. Jesus doesn't condone such behavior. That is of the wicked.

Being gay is no different than being heterosexual in God's eyes.

    We ALL sin.

It's only when we start making excuses, or attempt to justify our sins does it become a slippery slope.

For example, someone with ADHD may not be able to control his or her actions. But they are still responsible for what they do.

Being "born" something doesn't automatically give any action that stems from it the A-OK.

"If God made heterosexuals, God also made homosexuals."
Actually God only made two people. After the fall of man we made the rest.

"Scientific research has shown over and over that homosexuality is present across cultures and species."

So is murder. Does that suddenly make murder ok? (Not that I am comparing homosexual sex to murder.. but the logic there is absurd)

"And by the way, for those people who have commented about how marriage is a “Christian” ceremony, I must point out that Christians were NOT the inventors of marriage. Ever hear of Jews?"

Most Christians believe Christianity is just an extension of Judaism. The God of Abraham promised a messiah. The Christians today believed it was Jesus. The Jews now are still waiting for him to come. Which of course I am sure it part of the whole plan.

" I think they were doing the marriage thing before Christianity existed. And someone else was probably doing it before them."

No one knows when such marriage began. But we DO KNOW what it means NOW. And that is all that matters.

And JP… "Don’t give me your “it exists in the animal” kingdom argument. Animals also practice cannibalism, eat their own poop, and do various other disgusting things that are indicative of less intelligence."
There are some ahem, 'nice' people out there who do that too! Its not like the animal kingdom, but sex is a primeval and animalistic thing. And most animals mate for life… (not all… my cat is actually gay which makes me chuckle, he hasnt got a clue!)

Exactly. It's not about equal rights or love. It's about attempting to force society as a whole to accept their moral standards.

Which is what they are claiming to be against other people doing.

It's not ok to shove moral standards down the throat of anyone. Unless of course it's your OWN moral standards. And that's because you are right and the other guy is wrong.

That is exactly what Fred Phelps believe too.

There needs to be more compromise. More trying to make everyone happy. Instead of just ME ME ME I WANT I WANT I WANT.

#170 - ANGIE, God made PEOPLE. The act of homosexuality has been around since the days of Christ and even exisited in the Old Testament. As Christians, we are taught to love everyone…period. Personally, I don't judge anyone. It's not my job to do that. It is God's job to do that at the time our lives end. It's simple…if you believe in God, you believe in His laws and obide by them. God doesn't force Himself on anyone. He gives us all free will. So many people put their own "spin" on what God says about homosexuality. People put their own "spin" on God's words to fit their lifestyle - whether you are gay or not. Living by God's Word isn't easy for anyone, but the rewards will be great in heaven. Build your treasures in heaven, not here on earth. Everything will pass away one day. The question everyone should ultimately ask themselves is "where am I going to go when I die?"

I don't think religion has anything to do with marriage. I'm atheist and hetero, I don't believe in religion, and if I get married, I will be calling it a marriage. So just because I love someone of the opposite sex and not the same sex I get more rights to a word than homosexuals? It doesn't make sense to me, should I not be allowed to technically "marry" because I'm not religious like some people? are you going to decide which religions are allowed to use the word "marriage"? can only catholics use the word "marriage"? what about jews? or muslims? who decides who can use the word marriage and who is unworthy of it? I think gays and lesbians have just as much right to use the word marriage as anyone else, and if it's so religious based, why aren't you faith-propelled people out arguing against atheists who technically "marry"?

Isn't it about equal rights and LOVE? What if gay marriage was the norm for centuries with it's history and traditions, pairing one man with another man and then straight people wanted to get married and use the word "married." Do you think all gay people would be tolerant of this? Or do you think that some may say you are equal and should have equal rights, but marriage in it's definition has meant something to us for centuries. It's like the different customs and traditions of different cultures. Italians aren't better than Irish or vice versa, but they each have their own traditions and words for things that they use. I'm 100% for all people haing 100% SAME equal rights and I am NOT religious, but seriously why do you HAVE to have the word marriage?

Why do most Americans get so damned concerned about the specifics of other loving relationships between two humans yet never seem to know, or seem to care, about how their local, city, state and federal government is taking and splurging their money while the same elected officials show immense chummy favoritism to the law making lobbyists?

To the gays out there that claim calling a gay couple that want same rights as married couples to be called a "marriage" because otherwise it wont be equal.

Do you feel trampled on when you are called gay, and not straight? Does it offended you when you are classified as a homosexual and not a heterosexual?

Or how about lesbians? Do you get mad that people made a special name JUST for women homosexuals? Does that impede on your rights?

If not, calling a gay coupling something other than marriage shouldn't either.

BTW you Bible throwers out there. The Bible never said being a homosexual was a sin. Just the act of homosexual sex.

You can't be responsible for actions you had no control over. Only the actions you CHOOSE to make.

For example, the "White Pride" parades. They have no reason to be proud to be white. They had nothing to do with it. They were born that way. I feel similar feelings towards "Gay Pride" parades.

Those have a lot in common, even if they do have different agendas.

Now one can say "How fair is it to be born homosexual and not act on it?!?! Everyone deserves love!"

What about those born with pedophile? Do they not deserve sex and love that they too are attracted to? Or just certain people?

This is where the slippery slope starts.

I was born with ADD. I do things sometimes because I can't control my impulses. I am however, fully responsible for my actions.

    Life isn't fair.
