Following his suicide attempt last Sunday, Owen Wilson was discharged from the hospital this past weekend.

"Owen is in bad mental shape but said he is thankful to be alive," a source close to the actor tells People. "He knows he came close to ending his life, and he is happy that he was saved from himself. He is basically at home with people watching him 24/7."

They don not put too many people involuntarily in mental hospitals these days because of budget concerns and insurance. If they felt he was stable enough and had a strong support system staying with him, whether is was rich or famous, he'd be released if he was medically stable.

I am NOT rich or famous, but I do have bouts of depression, and a lot of it is brought on by living paycheck to paycheck. I have never contemplated offing myself as a way to solve my problems. Owen may be depressed, mentally ill, whatever, but I seriously doubt that the root of his problems lie in not having enough money. Also, because Owen does have the means to do so, he could get professional help, whereas some of us are not so fortunate.

I wonder sometimes how these people keep going when they have so little to look forward to. I guess being poor and w/o the means to pay for help makes a person stronger, I guess. But frankly, it would be nice if I didn't have to find that out…or live it each day.
