The demonization of gay people in America is a travesty. The issue right now is Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and his inappropriate actions in a public restroom. Whether he was gay or not he was breaking the law.

But if you believe, as I do, that people do not "choose" to be homosexual any more than they choose to be born male or female, should there be laws directed against gay people just because they are gay?

Imagine you are a loving parent, devoted to your children, raising them to the best of your ability, with care and affection. One day one of them tells you he/she is gay.

Do you stop loving this child? You may feel you should warn them that prejudices will cause people to treat them badly. They will even tell you the Bible or Torah says you are evil. Laws will discriminate against them and life in general will be harder for them.

But my beloved country has dealt with all kinds of bigotry in the past and we have mostly "overcome."

I write this on behalf of all the talented, intelligent, beleaguered and good folks I have known right here in our own area who are gay. We owe them respect.
