What's up with all these rappers claiming retirement lately??? And has Dre even been relevant since "The Chronic" came out? That was back in like 1993. I thought he already *was* retired. Just like everybody else, he'll drop another album when he runs out of $$$.

      Meh.

hilarious. do any of you fems on this site appreciate music? i'm not the biggest rap fan out there, but it's hard to deny the contributions this guy has made to the genre (a little group called NWA?). Oh yeah, there was also that diddy Chronic 2001 - sold a few million copies and jumpstarted Snoop's flailing career? You might have heard of it. My only problem with the guy is how he keeps pushing back the album's release. Just don't act like your not gonna pick up a copy when it hits.

uhm, didn't he do this 5 times already?

    28. liz says – reply to this

good producers need a break sometime. dr dre is the best producer out there right now. weather or not he deicded to stay retired is his choice, lol like jay z. maybe they wanna take a break, then realize they need more money and he woll come back in the game.

    29. Rick says – reply to this

      29

You guys don't know shit about Dr. Dre, he is STILL one of the biggest players in the game. His money run out? Are you crazy? He's been making cash like crazy, he's a serious power in the industry.

He's been saying he's done making his own albums after his next album (Detox) for like the last 7 years…… He's serious… if he wanted to put out tons of albums, he could have… that's not his thing.

He's serious a heavy weight producer…… Look at that fool Scott Storch running around flaunting cash… Dr. Dre shit all over Scott Storch, not to mention he signed 50 cent (and all of G-Unit), Eminem, and others to Aftermath…… who does Storch have signed? Brooke Hogan is his biggest his act

Dr. Dre is seriously huge, honestly IF he had the ego and wanted attention– he could have WAY bigger then Jay-Z, WAY bigger.

    30. Jay says – reply to this

      30

dre is has been practically retired from rapping. hes known more for making beats then rapping. hes last CD was in 99, it was a classic just like his 92 release. the guy is busy making hot beats and running his label. now hes moving to the movie business. plus hes 42, if he says hes going to stop making solo albums he most likely will. its not like hes saying "im going to retire" to sale records (like jay-z), dres going to sale records, this is one of the most anticipated albums. hes just letting the fans know that hes moving on to bigger things

Dr. Dre is THE BIGGEST AND MOST POWERFUL NAME IN HIP HOP TODAY.

      Aftermath— 100 MILLION++ records sold

If he wanted attention, he'd act a fool, drop verses on remixes/other artists tracks, etc. etc. He's WAY above this.

When he says he's retired from making CDS, he's done, period.

He's a mature middle aged man now, not Mr. 30 is the new 20 Jay Z…

      39

Well, I suppose I stand corrected about Dre's "relevance". Sure, I remember him from his N.W.A. days and his collabs with just about every West Coast rapper, but I just haven't heard much from/about him lately. But then, rpap lost me as a fan a loooooong time ago….

Is he gonna start making crappy movies like Ice Cube now?

    40. Starla says – reply to this

      40

I've often asked myself that same question. In Dr. Dre's case, I never really considered him a "rapper" like that………..just a producer. So, which is it that he's 'retiring' from?

his albums kill! He doesn't say he is "keeping it real" dumbass! he just does it. keeps low and single handely sway hip-hop supremacy back to the West coast when his shit drops cuz he produces ALBUMS! Not one or two fucking catchy songs with a video so he can sell records - whole fucking records with substance bitch, not catchy club tunes no one gives a fuck about in 2 years.

    44. HipHopHead says – reply to this

      44

Have you retards heard of Record Production??? Thats what Dre does. Heard of Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game??? Mary J Blige, Nas??? He produced there albums. How can you say he hasn't been relevant since the Chronic??? And when he says he's retiring he means from rapping, not producing. He's still known ass the best producer in the game. And he was 6th on Forbes list for highest earnings in Hip Hop in 06. You guys need to stick to the who's gay and who's on drugs stories and leave the hip hop shit to the real men.

    45. Adam says – reply to this

      45

Why doesn't anybody understand, musicians never "retire" from music. For a lot of musicians, music is all they know, music is there life, so although they may say that they are retiring, they'll never be gone.
Look at Jay-z, he was supposed to retire after he dropped his album "Kingdom Come" and what we came to realize is that retiring meant being featured on every single and their mother.
Dre retire? We have a better chance of seeing Whitney and Bobby become sober and restart their music careers. I think all this does it increase the hype for his album; the last one before he quits, "quick everybody better buy a copy!" Dre will continue to make beats and be an avid member of the hip hop community, who knows many even some feature appearances on a couple singles…it certainly wouldn't be unheard of.

Re: killmenow – Go read my comment you dumb fuck, just because you don't see someone on the fuckin tabloids or all over mtv doesn't mean they arent relavent. He executive produced Eminems albums, 50 Cents albums, the Game's albums, that Mary J Blige song No more Drama your ass was bobbin your fuckin head to, he made the beat.

      48

perez what the FUCK do you know about dr. dre? seriously.

its been fifteen years since Dre's first album came out. fucking classic album. its been 8 since his second album came out. and who the fuck knows when "Detox" will come out? Thats only two solo albums released and a third still pending in fifteen years. its obvious that dr. dre doesn't put out shit ass pop records like the people you promote. he's a perfectionist, he works hard on EVERYTHING he puts out production-wise or album-wise.

you're just like the fucking retard author of that article who compared the lag in between dre's albums to "pop trainwrecks." A good comparison if "The Chronic" and "Chronic 2001" hadn't been fucking CLASSIC hip-hop albums. Dre doesn't make fucking POP music anyway. He makes hard-ass HIP-HOP music. If white people like his shit and enable it to crossover into the pop market thats just extra icing on the cake because he's already got the hip-hop game downpat.

      (cont. in further posts)

    49. potbrownielv says – reply to this

      49

People have been waiting for his new solo album since 2000. Just because you haven't doesn't make him a has-been. Dr. Dre has been rich since before some of your readers were fucking born. And he's definitely been rich since before Jay-Z even put out reasonable doubt. Did you forget that he was in one of the most influential hip-hop groups ever? NWA is from the 80s. so don't get it twisted you fat fucking ass plow. I 100% believe dr. dre will retire from making solo albums after "Detox" simply because he doesn't need to make them; so why waste valuable time he could spend working on ridiculous beats for artists (that he can make way more cash from) and living off the royalties from the tons of hit songs he's already produced for the rest of his damn life??? And he's already cemented his name as a legend in hip-hop.

Not everyone's fame is of the 15 minute variety like yours and a lot of the artists you claim to "love" fatboy.

      66

Album sales, that's why…. Of course it's not like Dr. Dre needs to promote his music, it sales itself, but by putting the whole "i'm retiring" thing out there, it gets people talking, interested and, in the end, selling records. Look right here for example…… he put the comment out there about retirement and here we all are talking about it…. it works…. and chances are there are people reading and commenting on this that had no clue of his upcoming album or retirement…. now they do. It's business, my friend…. just business!!!! And really, artist as talented and Dr. Dre and Jay-Z, etc., the are not going to retire…. why would they? THere's a demand for what they do so why not get it while the gettin's good…. Artist that retire and STAY retired, well…. they more than likely weren't that good to start with or they die… simple as that. The great ones will be around as long as they're alive and kickin' or until no one cares anymore!!!!

Just so you know, he's damn near retired already. It's been almost 7 years since his last album. This isn't really a far stretch for Dre. He just said he wasn't making another solo record, not retiring and I actually believe him.

    76. Me says – reply to this

      76

He's not a rapper. He's a producer and he is not just another hip hop artist who's first album just dropped this year. He has been doing it for 22 years and I'm sure he has enough money to the point where record sales of an up coming album don't matter much. Not to mention that he is not a publicity whoe like 50 Cent.

Like everyone has already said, he's been working on Detox FOREVER, if he does come out with something after Detox it will not come out for a long time. And he never said anything about retiring from producing. The whole article is about how he's obsessed with the studio and just wants to produce and work out. Plus you're about a week late on posting this article. Leave the hip hop talk to Eskay over at nahright. He actually has an informed opinion.

Dre also produced some tracks for Gwen Stefani- everyone saying he is a "behind the scenes" heavy hitter is right. Now normally I would agree with you, but look at Dr. Dre's track record…

His album releases are so few and far between to begin with.

Plus he's been saying that this is the last record he was going to release since rumors started flying like 3 years ago.

      I believe this one.

ps - He is NOT just another has been.
