Where Have All The Gays Gone?

The gays are slowly disappearing off television!

According to a new report from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, a total of seven series on the five broadcast networks feature regular lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) characters this season, down from nine last season.

The number has dropped for the past three years in a row!

On the other hand, LGBT representation on the mainstream cable networks is skyrocketing with 57 characters this year, including 40 regular, up from a total of 35 (regular and recurring) last year.

Wassup with the gay plague????

Being a gay male you would think I would agree, however, I have a different view. I think that there should be a handful of really great, developed gay characters than just alot of them for the sake of having a gay character.

Most of Disney Channel shows advocate the gay life style like crazy.
Tv shows show gay behavior left and right. So, wherever these people are getting their numbers from is inaccurate. Clay Aiken and Zack Afron is more than enough for one season. Give us heterosexuals a little bit of air to breath. But, you must promote the Rosie O'donnell cause. 'Cause she's one ugly looking thing, whatever her sexual preference.

How about more shows about families. That's why I think Journeyman is going to be a hit on NBC.

I'm all for diversity on TV (whether its race, ethnicity, sexuality, etc) and its kinda sad that shows resort to having a "token asian guy" or a "token lesbian" character to be PC.

Shouldn't the casts of TV shows be somewhat reflective of society? Sheesh casting directors - get some statistics, get the racial and sexual %-age breakdowns of the US population, go walk around actual cities and then make a show that looks like that!!!

I remember Uhura on Star Trek when she was one of the few female, professional black characters on TV. She wasn't a maid and she wasn't a fool, and that was really innovative for TV at the time. That meant a lot to a whole lot of kids. Up till then, a black child watching TV got a very distorted idea about what options were open to him.

It's a small difference but it helps when TV does not pretend everyone in the U.S. is a W.A.S.P.
