Farrah's Cancer Update

Since her cancer has returned, Farrah Fawcett has (understandably) been laying very low.

Now, comes comes news that the Charlie's Angel alum is in Germany seeking alternative treatments.

Uh, oh. Things must not be good!

Craig Nevius, who produced Fawcett's reality show Chasing Farrah and a friend of the star, tells People that although Fawcett's cancer has returned, her health has not declined.

"She was declared 100 percent cancer free and then it came back," he says. "She was discouraged by the treatments she got here. The fact that it recurred after all that she went through was heartbreaking."

The treatment Fawcett is receiving in Germany is not allowed in the U.S.

Nevius declined to reveal the nature of the treatment but he did say, "She's been documenting everything in a video diary" for "what could be a very important documentary."

About 2 years ago my cousin who had breast cancer went to Germany for what I assume is the same treatments. She passed away there but apparently the treatment was going well. Perhaps Farrah will have a more positive outcome. Best of luck!

I worked in the natural supplements industry for a long time and now I am in an allopathic medical school in Boston - the best place to study medicine in the world.

Spare me with these foolish alternative treatments. Cancer treatment isn't even an option in homeopathy if you really understand it. Why? Deep pathology. Even if you google some of the homeopathic sites and cancer, you will see that they don't even recommend it. Break the word "homeopathy" down. Explain to me what herbal source (even at "therapeutic" doses) would mimic something that is often times symptomless? Whatever.

Ask yourself this. If you were to come down with some kind of cancer that is readily treatable by allopathic (traditional) methods, would you opt not to do it and go for alternative therapies? The tried and true methods are researched and documented to work better than any of the half assed "researched" alternative methods. And don't give me the anecodtal chinese medicine crap either. If you really understand herbalism, you will know there is a huge variance in quality of herbs based on a variety of factors which means that you can't have a quantitative therapeutic dose of anything, unless you have a full lab in your herb shop to analyze what you're giving patients.

Cancer is a very unpredictable disease. When Farrah had her three month check up in February, I suspect that her doctors told her that there was 'no evidence of cancer at this time - so far, so good.' I cannot imagine that any reputable doctor would tell her that she was '100% cancer free.' Not just three months out. It would be both cruel and irresponsible.

Many cancers are considered to be cured if the patient goes for FIVE YEARS without a relapse. Some of the are considered to be cured if the patient goes for SEVEN years without a relapse. I just finished treatment for breast cancer. It is so unpredictable that it is NEVER pronounced to be cured.

I wish Farrah all the best. Cancer is not a disease that I would wish on anyone, ever. Not even on my worst enemy.

I was surprised to hear she was 100% cancer free–it's generally 1-2 years before docs here make that statement. As for her 'stealing' someones treatment in Europe, she is certainly not. She isn't going to the head of any 'line'–she is doing what most European's who have the means do, go to a private doc for such treatment(i.e. pay out of pocket, not part of the socialized med system). Wishing her well–nobdy short of Hitler deserves anything like this.
