Quote Of The Day

082607_spn_osbourne05.jpg

"We believe 100 per cent in euthanasia, so have drawn up plans to go to the assisted suicide flat in Switzerland if we ever have an illness that affects our brains. If Ozzy or I ever got Alzheimer's, that's it - we'd be off. We gathered the kids around the kitchen table, told them our wishes and they've all agreed to go with it. There's no way I could go through what (my father) did, or put my kids through that. My father deteriorated at such a rapid speed he became a shell of himself. Some say the disease is hereditary so at the first sign I want to be put out of my misery."

Love ya Sharon. I cared for Alzheimers patients for many years and understand where you're coming from. Those who have never had a family member or friend affected by the disease might not. Stem cell research shows promise. And I don't want to hear from any bible thumping, darwinean negating pro lifers who say it's unethical while at the same time supporting war.

To #36:Bunny…Learn to spell the name that your calling people, dumbass. It's "retarded". Not "retarted". I worked with the MRDD community for years, and I hope I have half the impact on someones life that some of them had on mine. They are not useless, brainless, or any less of a human than anyone else. They are sons and daughters, aunts and uncles. They teach people humility, compassion, and selflessness. I also work with Alzheimers patients right now, and I completely understand where Sharon is coming from. Someone that has never dealt with the disease on a personal level will never understand the havoc and chaos that it creates not only to the one that suffers from it, but for the family as well.

    56. Sherry says – reply to this

      56

You know what?? Good for her! It might not be what I'd do, considering I'm against suicide, but I have always respected the rights of those who are suffering to end their own lives with dignity. I still can't believe that doctor assisted suicide is illegal in this country. The rights to our own bodies are constantly under attack. (With the zealots in the pro life movement and everything else.) We don't have to agree with abortion or suicide personally… but none of us should have the rights to tell people what to do with their own bodies. Especially if they are suffering with a sickness or some kind of disease. If Sharon Obsorne and Ozzy don't want to live their final days being horribly sick or going crazy (more than they already are that is- lol), then they should have the right to end things their way.

    57. Living the Life says – reply to this

      57

Well, I think this is a personal choice. I agree but don't know if I'd have the guts to go through with it. You'd be more for it if you actually had a close relative with it and saw how they suffered and she did. Young people don't think about this stuff much but when you get older you do and it's scary sometimes to kow that every day brings you closer to your day of death.

    58. Alicia says – reply to this

      58

I agree totally. the law concerning this is 100 years old and needs to be reexamined. However - drug companies and hospitals make lotsa $$$ on keeping people alive. I would want to be spared pain and agony if my quality of life was deteriorating. You can do it for a pet - such a shame we can't care enough about each other to give a person a choice.

Welp, they're just letting the fear of what never may come rule their decisions. If a person has Alz. the family usually has ample time (can be 2-4 years usually) to discern what the person wants. They really are over-reacting. In day-to-day terms ,how willing are you to sign your life away ? Are they that cool with it? They're probably talking to some Dr.Idneversteereyouwrong who will lose his license on the next episode of Celebrity Manipulations..

      99

Re: Jay – Good point Jay. That's why it's important in the cases of doctor assisted suicide that the person be of sound mind first. In Oregon State for example, (the only state where doctor assisted suicide is currently legal), the person has to get the opinion of 2 different doctors who have reviewed the patient's case first, and then their case has to be looked over by a judge. (So that the families of the patient can't sue the doctors for malpractice.) Once those 2 doctors have deemed the patient to be in a good enough mental state to make the decision to end their life, and a legal court appointed judge has ok'd the proceedure as well (plus I think you need witnesses when the action takes place), only THEN is the patient allowed to end it all. To me, all of that is good enough! I mean, what other "proof" do we need as a society that the person is ready to go?!? If a sick person is willing to go through all of THAT to end their life in a humane and dignified way… then they obviously are ready to make that choice, and so I think they ought to be allowed to! But you don't have to agree with me or anything, it's only my opinion. I just think that it should be *legal*. Whether or not you, or I, or anybody else would *want* to do this, is a whole different moral and ethical story. I just think that we don't have the right to tell somebody they *can't* is all. Thanks!! :-)
