Radiohead's Novel Idea

Radiohead are giving away copies of their new album, In Rainbows, out next week.

For reals!

Now that they are no longer signed to a major record label, the band can do as they want. And they are giving their fans the opportunity to pay as much as they want or as little as 90 cents, the credit card processing fee to download the album from their website.

Die-hard fans will likely pay something or actually $80 to be precise. That's the amount of the new Radiohead box-set, which includes the album on CD, two vinyl records, a CD with additional songs, photos, artwork and lyrics.

Very cool to think outside the box, so to speak.

Kudos to Radiohead!

I advise everyone to get this cd as well, I heard it when they were on tour, it will be impeccable (as always).

      Re: jrui
"washed up fake alternative old ppl"! are u nuts to call them that?! are u kidding to include britney in such a conversation about radiohead?! u must be some young tater tot, who only regards mediocre pop tarts as "musicians". britney is such a generic act, just like all the pop tarts the music industry seems to be spewing out. she can't even sing live with that over-used chipmunk voice. urrrggghh! please grow up and widen ur music selection and not just to the likes of such punks of good charlotte and what have yous.

radiohead has been in the industry probably longer than u have been on this earth. they are geniuses in their genre and thom yorke is just amazing! anyway perez, i'm gonna get their album! i cant wait! i'm jumping like a little girl!

HOW is this novel??? PRINCE DID THIS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO when he released his Planet Earth album free with copies of the mail on sunday… and then he gave out further free copies to everyone who wanted one at each of his 21 shows at the O2 in london….
it's still pretty cool that they're doing this, but they're not the first… shame every radiohead album since Kid A has been horrrrible and TOTALLY self-indulgent…

Well, yes, people will always pay what something is worth. If its overpriced it will sit, if its underpriced it will get bid up. We've all taken highs school or college economics. So based on that concept, Radiohead should be paying US to take its lame music, and Oasis albums should be hundreds of thousands of dollars.

      67

actually i pre-ordered my Radiohead album today from their website for ZERO, so cost, no shipping, NADA, ZILCH i will be emailed a confirmation code i can use to DL it on it's release date Oct. 10.

NPR was talking about this today, how Radiohead has dealt a major blow to record companies and how albums have been traditionally distributed. artists actually make very little of their money from album sales, the record companies take most of the profits. artists make their money from tours and merchandise sales, so Radiohead actually stands to lose any significant money. by offering it for free on their website this will encourage many other artists to do this. prince already gave away his new album in copies of a British newspaper b/c he doesn't need a record co. to distribute his music anymore b/c of his fame.

it's brilliant and i think a lot more artists will be releasing their music via DL only in the future, putting an end to traditional relationships with blood sucking record companies.

it will also make the chart-survey companies re-think how they evaluate how #1 hits are made if people can DL albums and singles for free in the future album sales will no longer deteremine #1 status. look at Shitney, her stupid Gimme More is #1 on Itunes with almost no radio play…it can obviously go bad, but i think this is the wave of the future for music and it's a good thing.

anyway… they arent "copying" anyone, they are simply, perhapas, ALSO doing what others have done in order to distibute their music for FREE, as it has always meant to be. Its amazing. They will still make shitloads of money but even if they didnt, Im quite sure they have quite enough, I mean, come on, I have like, 800,000,000 of their albums… yeah… I know, thats a lot of friggin music. I wanna do dirty things with them.

i finished a degree in music production last year. I love Radiohead and am looking forward to getting the new album. However, in terms of the music industry, this is huge blow to all the artists who are just getting started out there.
A warning to everyone, due to downloads the music industry is collapsing, within two-three years albums won't be avalible anymore and that means that it will 100% harder for anyone wanting to make a career as an music artist to do so.
So for bands like radiohead who are already rich and famous it's fine for them to release their album this way, but it screws everyone else up.
