Country Is The New Rap

With the exception of Kanye West, sales of hip hop records have been on the decline these last twelve months. Country, on the other hand, is experiencing a boom in sales!

This week, country trio Rascal Flatts sold 547,000 copies of their new album, Still Feels Good, which easily put them them in first place on the Billboard 200.

This is the band's third straight #1 album!

Last week, Reba McEntire was #1 with her Duets album.

Country is huge!

Other notable debuts this week include the latest offerings from Joni Mitchell, Queen Latifah and Chaka Khan, and Keyshia Cole.

The reason that country music is still selling is because the fans are too stupid to figure out how a computer works. Either that or they are too broke to own one. Without the ability to download pirated music, the bumpkin masses are forced to cough up the cash (or foodstamps) for cassettes of their favorite slobbering songbirds at the local truckstop. The average IQ in the United States is 97 (70 being the clinical bar for retardation). Therefore, county music is a boom industry. BTW, the average IQ in the military (now) is 79. Before 2001 it was 90… Perhaps I'll go write myself a Brooks and Dunn ballad about that travesty…

RASCAL FLATTS IS NOT COUNTRY. They are nothing more than bullshit pop artists. I detest these fat wannabe boy-banders. Country music isn't sung by whiny, nasally jackasses with porn star wives. They are POP ARTISTS and I wish they would stay the hell off country radio.

Rap music is not as good as country music, so let's hope that country does not become the new rap…

I'm very happy for Rascal Flatts, they really deserve all these great stuff that they're living through… So does Reba…

I don't care everyone's discussion about Rascal Flatts being country music, pop or rock or whatever… They are just a great band and they just do amazing music… if its up to name its music, they have an obvious country root, maybe kind of poppalized (??), but i really don't care. I just love those guys…

I'm a lifelong country music fan.

      Country Music: George Strait
      Alan Jackson
      Johnny Cash
      Dolly
      Loretta
      Brooks and Dun
      Alabama
      Tammy
      Hank
      Patty Loveless
      etc

Just cause they sell well and are labeled country, doesn't mean they're country. Rascal Flatts is a bad pop group, that came after the boy band fad was over. Somehow they fooled country radio into believing that they were the real deal. No dice, they are frauds and they suck.
Only people under 20 would even consider listening to their garbage.
I love country music and I hate Rascal Flatts aka Rascal Fags.

I also like what is truely R&B, today's hip hop "artists" ruined all of that.
And yes, I agree Rascal Flatts aren't old school country either.

Country is not about appearance and style. Its about the music. You don't hear hip-hop telling stories about life. All you hear is drugs and sex. Country actually sings about things that are real. DO YOU GET IT NOW?

Thats BS! Just because it's country doesn't mean we still use 8-tracks! We're not Redneck, or Hillbillies, or Trailer Trash, or Hicks, or Racist Homophobes. And yea…for all you idiots out here…WE FREAKIN HAVE COMPUTERS AND WE DOWNLOAD! Don't get all hasty with me. I like hip-hop/rap too.

No. There is such a thing as defending some of your favorite artists or types of music though. And I am not kidding. You get off your little soapbox and do a little research, and you'll find that Country music is VERY well-established. It invokes emotion and talks about things that really matter, unlike other genres of "music" you people are listening to today.

#118 Blues, R & B and soul, Jazz ballards all told stories about life and love, loss and living. Blues did it over a hundred years ago, nobody said Rap ever claimed to have such feelings. Only young people who don't know anything about music think that way.

I hate country music because of the stereotype it perpetuates about Southern people. Also, just because it's popular does not mean it is high quality. It's a known fact that lowbrow sells to the masses, which explains the popularity of country music, McDonalds, and Wal-Mart. I hate rap, too. Rock music will always be the best because it represents hip, cool, rebellious, and has the most ingenious artists in its genre. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles are just as popular today as they were thirty-something years ago. Long live rock!!!

#139 All those bands you mentioned are rooted in the Blues, even The Betales. When the Beatles first set foot on American soil they had albums by Muddy Walters, John Lee Hooker and B.B. King under their arms. Those are the artist they wanted to meet. Rock & Roll is rooted in the Blues. Blues and R & B has always set the standard for cool in this country. One of the main reasons so many different races like American black music is because it has always been cool and hip as well as being great. Though I am not a fan of rap.

Hey - #91 - GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT - JIMI HENDRIX WAS IN A NASHVILLE BASED COUNTRY BAND FOR 4 YEARS, WHILE HE LIVED IN NASHVILLE. COUNTRY MUSIC INFLUENCED THE LIKES OF RAY CHARLES AS WELL AS MUDDY WATERS AND JOHN LEE HOOKER. R&B DID NOT EXIST IN IRELAND, WHICH IS WHERE THE FIRST STRAINS OF COUNTRY MUSIC CAME FROM. BY THE WAY, LET'S TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT COUNTRY MUSIC IN AMERICA CAME OUT OF THE DAYS OF THE MAYFLOWER - NOT THE 1950'S, WHICH ISN'T EVEN WHEN THE BLUES STARTED - THE BLUES BECAME POPULAR WITH WHITE MEN IN THE 1950'S - SIMPLY BECAUSE A BUNCH OF YANKEE BOYS WERE STATIONED IN THE SOUTH - WHERE THE BLUES WERE ACTUALLY PLAYED ON THE RADIO. THE YANKEE'S THEN TOOK THEIR DISCOVERY NORTH WHEN THEY WERE RELEASED FROM THEIR SERVICE.
IF YOU WANT TO TRY TO MATCH WITS WITH A MUSIC MAJOR, POP CULTURE MINOR - AT LEAST DO SOME RESEARCH SO YOU SOUND A LITTLE MORE CREDIBLE.

CALL ME A DUMBASS - LOL - BABY - I'M THE HEAD OF THE CLASS

      Re: Nicole

Nicole, you are probably already aware of this, but country music came from folk music, every nation had their own "folk music".

About the likes of Ray Charles and Muddy Waters, they were the Blues, if I recall correctly, although the roots of blues as African folk music has never been properly documented before hitting America, did Country influence the Blues or did the Blues influence Country music?
Blues as well as other genres of music that were called "race music" as a whole greatly influenced Country and birthed Rock N Roll. The Blues was cool and had a lot of heart and soul, that is why it has enriched and influenced America's most popular music genres. Pop music has always been about profiting off of more obscure, creative and what might appear "risky" music forms and at the same time removing the purity which made those "obscure" genres inspirational and made so many people love it in the first place.
