Rose McGowan Is Destroying Robert Rodriguez's Career

Fangurls went into a tizzy when the news broke that Robert Rodriguez cast his fiance, Rose McGowan, as the lead in his remake of Barbarella.

Now, the director's nepotism is biting him in the ass. Hard.

The NY Observer is reporting that Universal Studios has backed out of the film as a result of McGowan's casting. As a result, the film will be financed solely by independent backers.

Rodriguez denies that Rose's casting had anything to do with Universal losing interest in the film. Instead, he says it all had to do with money.

"Universal had initially signed on for $60 million,” says Robert. "But then when we were done with the script it wound up at closer to $82 million."

Rodriguez also counters that the folks at Universal were in fact thrilled with McGowan’s screen test, “blown over,” as he put it. “They said, ‘What are we looking at?’” Mr. Rodriguez said. “She looks fantastic in the role. … She was perfect for this part. She just has that daring look, a sort of classic sexiness that is also kind of futuristic.”

Sources close to the film paint a different story, though.

“It’s sort of embarrassing for everyone involved,” says an insider. “No one thinks Rose can carry the movie, but Robert won’t listen.”

Rodriguez is still trying to shop the movie - with McGowan attached - to other studios for additional backing.

Whoah!! This is the movie J.Lo was supposed to be in. An interviewer told Jennifer Lopez when she was promoting El Cantante that people connected to the movie informed him that Rodriguez wanted her to be in this Barbarella film, much to her surprise.

Guess it all changed when Rose McGowen sucked his dick ten times a couple of nights later and convinced him otherwise.

saying it's a bad career choice is relative to what kind of person you are and how you feel about movie making. as a film student, I understand Robert Rodriguez' vision. He is not a typical Hollywood film maker. The films he makes are indie-style, and with the style of his films, and the way he will probably make Barbarella, Rose McGowan is perfect, just as she was in Planet Terror. This is not a bad career move to him because he works outside of the lines of Hollywood, and I really respect and commend that.

And as far as that article goes, it's hard for anybody to know the truth because I read something completely different a LONG time ago.

And as somebody earlier said, why should he have to stay with somebody when he is in love with somebody else? If you're all for marriage being forever, then I understand your opinion. But, like I said… I'm a realist.

Jane Fonda was a young-looking 29 when she played Barbarella. McGowan is a more haggard-looking (as per Hollyweird standards) 34. The actress cast as Barbarella should definitely be under 30. First off, you need to get your facts straight. Grindhouse was a flop, good movies, but did not do well in theaters because it was released during a family film oriented weekend. And if you look back and search for Interviews of rodriguez you can clearly see that he shows favoritism towards rose, its kind of cute but considering that he was married at the time it was pretty messed up. Rodriguez is really infatuated with Rose, (and the letter R) but he should not allow that to cloud his judgement with his work, that's why everyone is really mad (that and he left his wife he gave him FIVE kids), there are other actresses who are ten times the talent that rose is and its not fair.
