Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling delighted and stunned the world on Friday when she announced to a pack house at NYC's Carnegie Hall that Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore is gay.
Like, duh!
The shocked audience gasped and then then applauded, prompting Rowling to say, "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."
She should have told us sooner! That would have been so wonderfully inspiring to have a character in one of the major children's literary franchises of our time be gay.
J.K. also revealed that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, who he beat in a battle between good and bad wizards long ago.
"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she added, saying Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down" and his love for Grindelwald was his "great tragedy".

Of course is important to have a gay character for children! I knew I was different since I was 5 but did not have ANY role model to help me understand who I was. Kids today are MUCH more sophisticated and insightful not only than we were but MUCH more than their parents realize or give them credit for. Unfortunately, without a PROPER explanation of human variations, kids both gay & straight, are at the mercy of bullies and older kids who think it's fun to traumatize the younger ones. People once & for all need to realize that you don't "become" gay due to external influences but that your orientation is not only set (whether straight, gay bi or any where in between) but ALL are valid & need to be encouraged to develop a self confident and well adjusted person.

I'm not gay at all. I'm a straight girl who believes in equal rights for gays. I just believe that it's impossible to compare the two. And don't you dare say that no one cares what people do in their bedroom–a LOT of people care, which is why gays don't have the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts. And I NEVER compared gay oppression to the things blacks and jews have been put through. I simply said they should have equal rights and being "oppressed" by the government because you smoke weed isn't the same thing. It isn't an oppression–it's YOU doing something ILLEGAL. I think the fact that the character of Dumbledore was gay is delightful… I mean here is a very loved character who happens to be gay. I get really grumpy when people intentionally misuse "Judge not lest ye be judged." That statement literally means you can't say if one is going to heaven or hell. It doesn't say call a spade a spade. My best friend is gay. He's so close we call each other brothers. He knows I don't care. But at least he has the balls to say he's a freak. Nowhere in the Bible does it say to leave people alone and not point out when they are doing wrong. It says the opposite to help your brother find the right path. God doesn't make mistakes and if he created someone to be gay, he would be making a mistake by his own word. Child molesters like to say God made them that way, too. I don't think she said it in the books because it was pretty irrelevant to the story itself. Still, I think it's really cool. Dumbledore is made of win and chocolate chip cookies.

J.K. Rowling ruined her whole series, I think after the 3rd book she didn't know where it was going. I am soo friggen disapointed with the end of the book and I think I could write the ending of the story better. She went from an awesome writer to a gready-publicity-magnet. Now that she is rolling in all the cash of course she doesn't care about how the book ends. All those children are going to be very disapointed when they learn their favorite wizard is walking around naked in the last book. I mean unless you're old enough to understand, I think J.K. Rowling to make it up to all of us, and re-do the friggen book! She's just making up things as she goes along now because she's getting paid to do it. I don't think him being gay as anything to do with the book or story at all, she's just bullshitting her way through because she didn't state anything clearly in the book. Wow, Harry gets married to friggen Ron's sister??!?! What the hell happend with that. J.K. Rowling ruined my childhood dreams of become a wizard. Oh, and Harry's not gay. But he does appear naked in the play "Equs" in London… Arg J.K.!
Ok, I read almost everyones comments on this. J.K. Rowling did not announce this for any other reason than making herself more popular! There was no "hidden" meaning behind this. I bet she was sitting during the press conference that wasn't going too well because the ending to her book sucked, and she was like well guys I have some amazing news! I'm not against gays or anything, but stop trying to put a meaning on it! In my eyes, he will always just be an old nice wizard who tries to help Harry because his parents die!! Seriously, no respect for J.K. Rowling, I admit the books were really great. But so disapointed with the way it ended. After it being that popular and big, she didn't explain anything. I was really upset being a huge fan of the books and the movies. I really think she should have done a better job at it, maybe taken a little bit more time and make it what it should have been. I really don't think her stating this had any sort of meaning at all. It was just something stupid to add to the book. I'm so disapointed!
I'm glad they released this cause now I don't have to take my kids to see these stupid movies. Especially with a gay slant

Re: Glad – Yes! It's horrible. You could see it coming because of the glitter Dumbledore wears on his robes in the movies and he's just a little tooooo limp wristed when he waves his wand. Most people missed it but the vigilant saw the signs. I know the town where I saw it collapsed into complete moral corruption the moment the movie was released. Now there are homos, whores, and politicians running up and down the street, partying at all hours of the night. We Puritans are afraid to go on our Friday night witchhunts for fear one of them will want us to vogue or something. It's awful.

as far as the part about kids seeing the movie and gay stuff.. right now the only way this story is told with the wizard being gay is in a book… a book that lots of adults read and have the whole set to. i will also be suprised if that shit makes it into the movies. i think she fetched it a little far on this one. there coulda been a better ending to it all than that.. i mean yeh maybe its well known for a harry potter story to have some crazy off the wall unexpected shit but this is just a little too crazy for even me. and im rarley shocked lol

um..i think she just made this announcement a/b dumbledore for the publicity, since she's not getting anymore. and wtf? in the books it explained that his "great tragedy" was his family breaking apart. she cant even stick to her own storyline.

First, let me begin by stating that Harry Potter is my life…and Dumbledore is a big part of my life. In fact, I wrote a letter to Hogwarts begging me to be allowed to attend…anyway, HARRY is not gay, or bi…he is married, to a woman (Ginny). Duh. So unless Rowling chooses to create some gay Harry extramarrital affair, thats not happenning….
