Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon's new movie, Rendition, bombed at the U.S. box office this weekend.
The film, which played in 2,250 theaters, opened at a very disappointing 9th place - taking in just $4.1 million.
Meanwhile, the film 30 Days of Night, which was shown in about as many theaters, took in four times that! The film opened at #1 with $16 million.
Who else beat Gyllespoon? The Comebacks, We Own The Night and a 3-D reissue of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

I saw the movie this weekend and it was a fine movie. I agree with some of the other posters that people just aren't in the mood to watch a heavy drama about torture. The movie is hardly a flop like Gigli. It is a good movie with good acting.

I LOVE Jake and Peter and I was first in line for this but I would recommend waiting for the DVD. The story line was blah. I thought the actors did the best they could but it wasn't good. Oh well.

saw the film in previews….Jake and Reese have no scenes together…maybe that would have helpped……..basically the movie is a very looooong snore….the amazing talents of the two stars could not save it……no Gili curse here, just slow as molassas story telling……one good/interesting twist at the end.

You fail to mention that Meryl S, Alan Arking and director Gavin Hood are also part of this movie. All Academy award winners, hood as a director and the others as actors. the movie cost less than 30million to make, it's a message movie geared at winning awards.

One photo in a car doesn't compare to what Bennifer did in public.

Now the public is doing the same. She should take at least a couple of years off. Then, if the timing and script is right (at this point she may have even written it herself), re-emerge as a brilliant and bankable actress.

I saw Rendition and I thought it was really good. And frankly, Jake needs to do more sex scenes. He is so damned hot in his opening scenes it's just a shame they didn't show a lot more and a lot longer.

I USED to like Reese Witherspoon, but ever since she won her Oscar she has been completely full of herself. She is by no means one of the best actresses, and she should truly be thankful for the work and money that she has rather than be so snotty (i.e. with photographers).
What REALLY irks me is she's too busy to stay on the couch on "The Tonight Show." She's at the point we she just plugs and runs; I never respect actors who do that.
This is the first and only movie Reese has filmed since winning the oscar for "Walk the Line" almost two years ago. Rendition gave her the chance to work two other academy award winners and a winning director, who would take that chance. She only filmed for a few weeks and her part is maybe a total tops of 20mins. She backed out of a film she was set to film and produce this summer because of her divorce. Her next movie, which she will get paid millions for is a holiday comedy with VV.
Jake is signed on for two big movies himself. This movie was never thought to be a hit in the first place, it was made for awards, the movie just didn't turn out that great.
This movie was AMAZING. I am surprised it did badly in numbers - but it's NOT a reflection of the movie. One of the best I've seen in years! To compare it to Gigli is just plain ignorant. Everyone should see it!

reese and jake were specifically cast in this movie so that at least more of the relaxed american public (the kind which puts "30 days of night" as their number 1 film) would attend an otherwise underground-themed-indie-kinda film that deals with current political and ideological issues in a dignified way. yes it might only be number 9, but that is still much more exposure than had it played only in LA and NY in smaller theaters… with lesser known actors, as the director gavin hood had considered at first. also, meryl streep gives an excellent performance in this film, but i guess visitors to this site don't know who she is because she's old and classy.

Fred and Ginger from the grave and put them in that film and it would

I'm a huge fan of a lot of the actors in this movie and I have to admit that it was not a good movie at all. So maybe that is why it did bad. Brokeback Mountain and Crash were both little indy movies made for small money that went on to be very successful critcally and made money. Maybe they were hoping for some of that magic but trust me it's not there the movie just wasn't that good.
