      I'm sorry, but I think "outing" a fictional character whose sexual orientation has absolutely NOTHING to do with any of the story lines whatsoever is just a lame attempt at added publicity. I think it's stupid. For all of those ready to attack, I'm not calling homosexuality stupid - I just think its stupid to create this publicity stunt totally out of context and waaaaay after the fact.

      This is not written into the book so why should anyone care? Rowling's comment demonstrates either her latent homophobia or a desperate need for publicity. Why would she come out, post Potter series, with the "revelation" that Dumbledore is gay? She would never stand in front of a group of people and announce he was hetero. If she felt Dumbledore's sexual orientation was so fucking important to the books, then why was she too chicken shit to write it in?

      I shouldn't be surprised about this- our society today is so ingrained with sex that I should expect a sex subplot in a children's series. I wish she'd come out with it at the start though- a lot of parents have read these books to their young children, and they should have had a choice in how to teach about homosexuality. Now their kids are going to hear, "Dumbledore is gay!" and they'll have to explain whether their child is ready for it or not. I'm one who has read the books to my daughter. She's young enough that she doesn't even know how babies are made yet- yet now she might be asking me about what it is to be gay. I just wish JK would have done this all differently. I don't think Dumbledore being gay adds to the story. The plot's the same whether his love for Grindlewold is platonic or otherwise. Now this great series is going to turn into a gay rights political battle. How sad a good story can't just be a good story anymore.

      I've never had a problem with homosexuality but I do have a problem with this. I think that this has nothing to do with furthering a story but a cause instead. If that's the case, she was cowardice about it by waiting until all the books have been released and 3 months since book 7. It's not going to turn me off to the books, but I know it will affect others. Especially future readers.

She's richer than the Queen of England for heaven sakes, her books are sold in almost every language, she has five sucessful movies that give her royalties etc. JKR doesn't need the publicity.
      All this woman did was answer a question honestly. The book series is over with — she doesn't need to be worried about sales anymore. Besides Grindlewald was a bit important to the plot which is why she didn't say so before.
      She said that she always imagined him as gay — so just because she didn't say in the books explicity he was makes it all false and untrue?
      It had little if any baring on the main plot line. The books are called Harry Potter not Albus Dumbledore's Sexual Exploits.

      wow, that was a great article. Thanks for showing it to us Perez! I, too, wondered why Rowling was dishing out so many of the secrets that she claims happen after book 7. I mean, if it doesn't happen in the book then why say it happened at all? I will continue to fantasize about what i think happens in Harry's Ron's and Hermione's future rather than waiting for her too fill in the holes.

      Oh, please… if people have thought there weren't sexual overtones in children's stories before this perhaps need to spend more time reading some literary analysis. I freaking love how people object to a character being gay (when it wasn't a major topic of discussion IN the book), BUT don't object to the violence in book - ever read the real fairy tales?
      As for "it was a yes or no question" - POSTWATCHER, get real. The audience was full of RABID fans. If she had just answered "yes" someone would have definitely said "OMG, WHO was he in love with?" Actually, you need to read the complete transcript. She goes into detail as to who he fell into love with -
      I'm not sure if I am that thrilled with the article, and I certainly don't agree. Every author discusses background details of a book (heck, the article mentioned by Neil Gaiman, where Gaiman slams JKR for revealing so much, is very hypocritical… Gaiman slips in a number of background details of his own about a number of his books. The difference is that JKR hasn't been able to gradually discuss her books as each came out - for fear of giving away anything. She has said how unusual it has been, and indeed how "freeing" it is for her to be able to talk about the books to people without fear (unless they haven't finished them yet)

Rowling was ASKED by a student whether or not Albus Dumbledore ever had a romantic life, or if he was ever in love with somebody, and it was only THEN that J.K. mentioned that the character was a gay man. Obviously she didn't put that fact in the story, or make a big deal about it beforehand… because it *wasn't* a big deal, or central to Harry's struggles, and therefore not really worth mentioning until now (that she was asked). Besides, why the hell would J.K. Rowling need the publicity?? She's already richer than the Queen of England for pete's sakes, and even though all of the books are done now, there are still more movies to be made, there's going to be a theme park in Florida, and she's going to write an Encyclopedia of the wizarding world in a few years. She didn't "need" to reveal that Dumbledore is gay for publicity!
