For example, the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian Universalist Church, the United Methodist Church, Reform Judaism, just to name a few churches that have openly advocated for gay rights … Being Christian or religious is no longer an excuse for someone to be intolerant. If Barack wants to show his religious side, he had plenty of options other than some evangelical ex-gay bigot. Barack has used his Christianity as an excuse for not supporting gay marriage, although there are various Christian churches that have come out in support of it. Quite frankly, I think he misses a good opportunity to show this country that being Christian and accepting of gays are not mutually exclusive. It's a shame.

I don't know why everyone thinks it is so commendable that he spoke out for gay and lesbian equality. All of the other democratic candidates have said essentially the same thing. Hillary Clinton has always been a strong advocate of LGBT rights as was Bill, despite some unfortunate legislation he was forced to pass during his Presidency due to a republican-controlled Congress. John Edwards also has a strong record in supporting gay rights. Kucinich is the only candidate that supports the legalization of gay marriage. And while Clinton has chalked her aversion to full marriage equality up to her belief that the legalization of civil unions is a more feasible goal, Obama has admitted that his Christianity keeps him from supporting gay marriage. As a gay woman, I am wary of supporting any candidate that wants to deny me full equality but in the end I will choose who I believe shows the greatest solidarity with the community. So far, Barack Obama hasn't convinced me that he's the one.

Re: amy – Amy - I am thrilled to hear that more and more churches are becoming more accepting of gay people. That is definitely a step in the right direction. My issue is this - none of the top tier candidates are 100% for gay marriage (unfortunately). However, Obama is for civil unions, and sometimes you have to take baby steps to get what you want. Maybe he will legalize legal unions and the next president will take the next step and legalize gay marriage. I just believe that Obama has a great head on his shoulders and he has not been corrupted by Washington at this point. So many of our politicians have been bought and paid for by big tobacco, drug companies, etc., so finding one who isn't corrupt is quite special imo. Elected officials are supposed to work for US not the highest bidder! I think he is smart and caring enough to do what's right in almost any situation. I wish he would take the anti-gay guy off his tour, but he will not lose my vote if he doesn't, because I think he is the candidate with the most brains and gives the US the best chance of getting ourselves back together.

This has always been Obama's position and he'll say that anywhere. He doesn't just want the gay vote, because saying that gays should have more rights will cause him to lose votes in lots of other communities. The religious people may not go for it. Other blacks may not go for it as well. Some whites may not go for it. What you have to look for is consistency at making good decisions, and sticking with the position a candidate takes. No one who's never been a President before has experience at being President until they actually become that.

Oddly enough, everyone in the black community knows that Donnie is gay/bisexual and preaches that he was once delivered from that 'lifestyle'. Perhaps it was the "demon" white man that incensed this tragedy with promises of money and European wares, but blacks did willingly kidnap and sell each other into slavery. I've read plenty of books, and taken courses about it at a prestigious college — this is an educated source, not just me professing convenient supposed facts to support an opinion. I don't doubt that some were forced onto ships by the "white man" himself, but I'm just saying that slavery was a tragedy initiated by a universal greed that wasn't limited to one color.
It's time to stop pointing fingers, and for all sides to recognize that this was an awful past created by unenlightened individuals; hopefully, we are a different breed of civilization by now.
Re: crotchrocket – Totally agree. I've been wondering when separation of church and state flew out the window for some time now. Religion has absolutely no place in how a country is run. People should be allowed to have their religious beliefs, but it should have no bearing at all on issues like healthcare, medicaid, welfare, taxes, environmental reform, etc. I think the reason it DOES mix, however, has to do with the common moral/ethical side of both religious views and policy. For example, abortion has common roots in both religion and a law (roe vs wade) determined in our government's courts. Marriage, obviously, has roots in both realms as well, as either a pact with God/Christ/whomever/whatever and/or as a declared private and legal parternship. Still, in ordaining laws about either of these, religious philosophy should not be invoked, but you can see how it's difficult to separate.
