And what's wrong with being friends or getting support from people who you might not necessarily agree with all the time? McGlurkin (gospel singer in question) hasn't even been anti-gay! He's simply said that he doesn't believe in gay marriage. And there is a difference. A lot of people sit on the fence like that- they may not support gay marriage, but are just fine with the gay community, and don't make any trouble for them. And so is Obama himself. (Although he is for civil unions) I'm not sure how I feel about that personally. I mean, if you are ok with civil unions… why not just let them get married too? I don't get it. Being in the middle like that, is only a way to pander to both crowds (the gays and the religious) and I've never felt that was ok. But I like Obama. i read in an article that mclurkin was saying homosexuality was a curse. and some other stuff. i agree that candidates should be able to associate with whomever they like. but they also need to be careful, if not, you get what's happening now. in the end, it hardly matters what obama really stands for and what mclurkin really stands for, it's what the general people think about this whole thing. and whether it's correct or narrow minded, obama should have considered this beforehand. what he's done really brings up the question what is he REALLY for? and of course, no one can answer that.
i don't get the civil union vs. marriage thing either. i really do think it's just a safe middleground that the candidates have placed themselves into. i think it's wrong and unfair. the only basis that marriage is for men and women only is from the bible. and this isn't a theocracy. i guess the way things are we're lucky to be getting that much out of the candidates. (i'm also surprised with guiliani taking the pro-choice/civil union trek. i'm kind of relieved, too…if a republican has to win, i hope it's him)

It would be really nice if the people on this board would learn what they are talking about. A case of the opressed becoming the opressors is what is going on here. Barak Obama has been and remains an ally to the gay community. Taking an audience with someone who is anti-gay only means that you are having a dialogue. If people with conflicting viewpoints never associated, their would not be a little thing called Democracy. The gay agenda is certainly valid, but gay activists have to keep in mind that they do tend to live in a bubble. The gay population is but a small aprt of the country. No presidential candidate needs it to win, in fact, being to pro gay could do more damage then good to a campaign. The fact that Obama has been outspoken in his support of the gay community says way more than the fact that this singer will be at an event. There is nothing wrong with associating with people who have differing views, its actually a breath of fresh air to see a politician reach out to everyone, as oppose to just who he thinks can get him elected. This Barak hating on this issue is unwaranted and says more about the intolerance of a segment of the population who should be among the first to understand that their is, was and always will be differences among Americans. Its part of living in a free society.
He said what he meant. That's a dangerous thing to do in politics or society these days. Maybe people wouldn't be so CONFUSED about what politicians are or believe in IF the politican could say it without being jumped on - wouldn't you rather know the truth? If you DID, it would shock you how many people are really against homosexuality. But no one says it. Because they don't want to look bad. think about it.
The association of the gay rights movement of now to the civil rights movement of the 50s-60s is completely off base. While gays do have to deal with prejudices, they are not the second class citizens that they would have you believe. gay people can vote, work and well represented in the media. Yes there are unfair stereotypes, but all groups must deal with that, even heterosexual white males (though, not as much). African Americans were fighting for the simple rights to vote, to be educated and to not be, literally, segregated from society. We don't live in a perfect world, but gay people have a lot more options than blacks in the 50's. I would beg of the hardliners pushing this anti-Obama agenda to step back and have some perspective. Spend a few days with no gay people and not refrencing everything back to the fact that you are gay, you may find that their is a larger world.
Not everything can float around the fact that homosexuals exist. Barak Obam is not the enemy of the gay community. Time spent on this kind of nonsense just makes the gay community look like a bunch of whining, impatient and misinformed queens. I know that isn't the case, but it sure comes off that way. Like all special interest groups, they are susceptible to narrow self-interest at the expense of the greater good. Protesting Barak will only set you back, it is all but a forgone conclusion that he would be a more effective leader as gar as the gay community is concerned than would be Hillary Clinton or any Republican running for office. Make sure you are careful about what flags you raise and choose your battles. This could be much more damaging to your cause than you realize.

But Obama has publicy shown his support for the gay community from day one, so why is it so hard to believe now that he doesn't really feel that way because he brought a religious gospel singer along with him? if you invite a religious person to tag along with you, even though you might be more liberally minded, chances are you two aren't going to agree on everything. I've been reading Obama's book Audacity of Hope. He's a decent man who wants to help our country reform politics and get rid of the bi-partisanship of this country. He wants to bring politics back to the center of what this country stands for. I feel ashamed that people of this country are calling him such horrible names and are full of such hate. He's a fresh voice. For those of you who are bashing him, rather than spend your time with stupid hate filled comments on this board, maybe you should take the time to see who he is and what he stands for. Otherwise you'll believe the lies people like Henry Krinkle (poster on this board) want you to believe. Obama may not win, but his message is important and could influence the future of our country nonetheless. Pay attention.
