That comes hot on the heels of Carell's last dud, Bruce Almighty 2.

On the other hand, the latest installment of the Saw franchise, Saw 4, opened to a very healthy $32 million.

CLICK HERE for this weekend's full Top Ten list.

  39. cs says – reply to this

    39

It's not Steve Carell's fault it's the scripts and movies he picks to be apart of. He needs better guidance on that. Because he was/is hilarious in the 40 year old virgin and the Office.

  40. eee says – reply to this

    40

    steve carell is the best.

  41. Alysa says – reply to this

I really don't see how Evan Almighty was a "dud", it was a fantastic movie.

  42. Allie says – reply to this

    42

Well of course Saw 4 came in 1st ON HALLOWEEN WEEKEND!!! I don't think Steve Carell has anything to be sad about. I saw Dan in Real Life and thought it was funny and heart warming. Probably a heck of a lot better of a movie than Saw 4 but just because it's Halloween weekend, people are going to be in the mood for that type of flick. Carell is the man!

    46

Jim Carrey, (for all intents and purposes) has been making movies since 1985. While he's made some very good movies, let's not forget, "Earth Girls Are Easy", "Me, Myself and Irene", "The Majestic" and "Fun with Dick and Jane". Not exactly Oscar worthy films.

Steve Carrell has been making movies since 2003 … "The 40 Year Old Virgin", "Anchorman" and "Little Miss Sunshine", were, in my opinion, wonderful films.

To compare a man who's been making films for 22 years as opposed to a man that's been making films for 4 is ludicrous.

You're right, Steve Carrell is not the new Jim Carrey … or the new Robert Redford, or George Clooney, or anyone else for that matter. He's the new Steve Carrell.

Oh, and the Office is nothing short of brilliant!

  47. ~I.P. Freely~ says – reply to this

    47

He's not as funny as HE thinks he is…..worth a laugh or two at best.
    Just Sayin….

  48. mia says – reply to this

    48

Yeah, well George Clooney's movie opened poorly too. It is a reflection of diminishing movie attendance across the board. Steve is funny, smart, and a hunk. I will see his movies, in my own good time. The studios just need to take a pill and quit overhyping the release totals. It doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the movie.

  49. WRITERS' STRIKE says – reply to this

    49

I SUPPORT YOU WRITERS GUILD! WHY SHOULD ALL THE STARS AND SINGERS AND ENTERTAINERS MAKE MILLIONS ON YOUR WRITTEN MATERIAL AND YOU NOT GET A RAISE? I SAY STRIKE. IT'S BS. MAKE THE TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS WORK!

  50. kate says – reply to this

    50

The kind of comedy that Jim Carrey does is completely different from Steve Carrell. Apples and Oranges. Lets not even list the bombs that Jim Carrey was in.

    53

I saw Dan in Real Life this weekend and really liked it. My boyfriend even liked it and believe me…thats saying A LOT!

  54. A. in Montreal says – reply to this

    54

Its so not surprising! Every time a comedic star breaks out, the studio's immediate reaction is to sign them for a series of flicks, one that the actor is suited to and the others where the star is smacked into the role like a square peg in a round hole.
Carell was hilarious in the 40 year old virgin, great in Bruce Almighty and little miss sunshine but its evident that safe "family films" are not his bag and putting him in flicks that seek out the widest viewing audience possible is terrible. The work that the studio is offering him is way too safe for him to really do a good job with it. The same thing happened with Jim Carrey, Robin Williams and Eddy Murphy. A talented actor in a bad or mediocre movie is still boring at the end of the day, no matter who you cast.

  55. leslie Lee says – reply to this

    55

Steve Carell is the best. The office rocks. I would take him over any hollywood pretty boy any day of the week.

  56. Michael says – reply to this

    56

It's a good number, Perez. Check the per screen average you moron. Stop doing box office analysis when you don't know shit about the movie business. Just report on gossip, not shit you don't understand

  57. Kristen says – reply to this

    57

I saw the movie and I thought it was hilarious. It made me laugh and cry. It was a movie about real life. It was about family, life, love, and heartache. I thought it was wonderful.

dan in real life was MAJORLY disappointing
all the funny parts were shown in the trailer

  59. HokiePokie says – reply to this

    59

It's not called Bruce Almighty 2….it's Evan Almighty. It figures you wouldn't say anything good about that movie…it's about values and morals. And it did do well.

Hey douche bag!! It wasn't called Bruce Almighty 2, it was Evan Almighty!!!! So if you want to talk shit, then you should probably get your shit straight first!!!

  69. pcs says – reply to this

    69

The movie was shown only on 1900 screens in the U.S. $12 million for 1900 screens is phenomenal. You dumbass. Learn how to interpret movie revenue stats before posting this crap.

  70. Not a Dud says – reply to this

    70

Dan in Real Life didn't even open in 2,000 theaters. Saw IV opened in over 3,000. $12 million is not a bomb.

  71. Myself says – reply to this

    71

Of course Perez, much like the rest of the media twists things to their satisfaction. DAN IN REAL LIFE only opened on 1,900 screens and grossed a per screen average of over $6,000 per screen. This is acutally VERY GOOD. It's a small dramedy you pink/green/blue haired douchebag. It's not meant to make $100 million. Oh, and I honestly had nothing to do with the film. I just get off on exposing Perez Hilton for the asshole he is. Oh, and he's fat too!

  72. Ellen says – reply to this

    72

I saw a sneak preview of it. Thought it was very good, just not amazing.
Far, far better than another movie of the same sibling switcheroo, "The Family Stone" with Sarah Jessica Parker. That was HORRIBLE.
Still, I enjoyed it and love watching Steve Carell. He is fabulous.
And there's nothing funnier than "The Office".

  73. Ellen says – reply to this

    73

I also think the people who came out in droves to see "Saw IV" are not the same people who'd come out to see "Dan". Those kinds of movies don't make the same millions.

  74. Laury says – reply to this

    74

Awwwww that sucks, Steve Carell is so talented and funny, he's just not good at choosing his movies I guess.

  75. Rita says – reply to this

    75

wrong, wrong, wrong! Steve Carell is halarious. And people go to see those stupid Saw movies because our society is made up of a bunch of freaks who are numb to horrific images.

  76. Gah says – reply to this

    76

Halloween is 3 days away. Of course Saw 4 came in first. You are a douche.

    81

too BAD tHE MOVIE IS CALLED "Evan almighty" JACKASS…. and i happen to buy it the other night not expecting much at walmart, cuz blockbuster was closed, AND I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED, THAT MOVIE WAS PRETTY FUCKIN FUNNY I MUST SAY.
THe Reason Why SAW does so good, because there are so many stupid sick fucks in the world who pay to watch a movie with no plot , just a bunch of twisted gory scenes, yez i have watched them too, not the recent, but THEY ARE SO FUCKING PLAYED OUT. GIMMEE A BREAK.oh and ur a fag. but i still kinda like u. fag as in fag not fag as in gay.

  82. Filmmaker78 says – reply to this

    82

STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW, PEREZ!!!! "Evan Almighty" did $171 MILLION at the box office. Dud? What #!@$%!@ planet are you on? "Dan In Real Life" is a small movie, it was meant to be a small movie, it most likely had a relatively small budget, and I'm sure it will be profitable.

  83. Kait says – reply to this

    83

and yeah, i can't believe it came in 2nd to a horror movie, the weekend before halloween. that's so ridiculous. like, jeeze.

    Dear Perez,

I don't understand you sometimes - Jim Carrey actually became respectable AFTER a couple of duds. I take it you haven't seen the two very good films he has been in since "Cable Guy"/"Liar Liar": "The Truman Show", and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (where he anchors the film exceptionally well). I know you are trying to make a financial point foremost, but, like a lot of your points, doesn't tell the whole story in order to try and make the point somehow more valid. It doesn't work.

    ^Jodi

Perez… this post made me angry. Coming in second isn't bad at all… geez. The Saw movies are worthless pieces of shit and they need to stop making them NOW, I could care less if it came in 1st.

For all the dumb people. 2nd place at only 12 mill = all down hill from there. Movies do not go up in ticket sales the following weekend.

All the die hards went this weekend, expect at least 50% drop off next weekend.

Perez, did you even see this? Are you just saying that b/c there wasn't a gay cast member? The best part was the sing-a-long about the piggy blind date. It was a wholesomely funny alternative for those that want a break from most movies that stimulate false anxiety (enough of which we get in real life).
