Steve Carell is not the next Jim Carrey.
The Office star's latest film, Dan In Real Life, opened with a mild to disappointing $12 million at the U.S. box office this past weekend.
That comes hot on the heels of Carell's last dud, Bruce Almighty 2.
On the other hand, the latest installment of the Saw franchise, Saw 4, opened to a very healthy $32 million.

I saw this movie and thought it was great. Carell will win an oscar in the next 5 years, I am sure of it. The movie was more than a comedy, much like Little Miss Sunshine. He is really a great actor; which usually has little relation to boxoffice gold.

The truth of the matter is, Steve Carrell's new comedy got off to an extremely respectable start this weekend. It was released in a small number of theaters (1921 vs. Saw's 3183) and had a quite healthy venue average of $6288, the second highest in the top ten.
That was a made for TBS movie. It SUCKED.
ugh perez im so sick of you saying people suck just cuz they aren't number 1 all the time. it wasn't hard to guess that carell's, or anyone's movie for that matter, wouldn't beat out saw IV since everyone goes and sees the saw movies even if they openly admit that they don't like them.

i used to loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee all the other 3 sawssssssssssssssssssssssss but this was was only about diff types of killing no storyyyyyyyyyy at alll……other ones had brilliant stories..and the twist the person who was doing all this after john death was not a suprise cause it could have been anone(i wont say who for ppl who wnaan go and seee)i mena in 2nd it was gr888888 shock that it was amanda who was doing the job but thisss nothing only diff ways of killing which is entertaining 1…i ddint like sawww 4444

He's got awhile to go to get to comedic greatness but his films are decent.
Unfortunately due to the lovely (free) world of pirating I and most other people will be downloading or watching streaming video of this new flick of his. If we'd gone to see it instead it would have made more - the rednecks contributing to the 32 million Saw 4 made don't own and can't operate a pc so that explains everything.

#2 on Halloween, against a horror flick, doesn't seem that horrible. Dan in Real Life has received moderate reviews but Evan Almighty opened with terrible reviews. This doesn't mean Steve Carrell is bad or can't open a movie. He just needs to choose better scripts.
Steve Carell has more talent in his left pinky than you have in your whole fat body Perez! He's so freakin' funny on "The Office". If you weren't so busy eating bon bons and trying to get men to like you, you'd have time to realize amazing talent.
If this movie came in 10th, I would go see it, because I love Steve Carell. He is so effing funny and if he weren't happily married with two kids, I would totally sign up to have his babies. The Office is the funniest show on TV and Carell is amazing — he's not one of these assholes out there cheating on his wife and turning turd because he's a mega-star now. Go Steve!!
Thats b/c most movie goers, esp on Halloween weekend, are young teens, and DAN IN REAL LIFE opened on limited screens - and still came in #2. Its a GENIUS movie, Steve is GENIUS, its the BEST movie i have seen in years!!!! Mark my words it will be a HUGE movie and make more than any movie all year long. Go see it - it's awesome!!!!

I'm ashamed to say that I know people who rushed to the theatre to go and see Saw IV on opening night… seriously. I need new friends, they are the most overrated piece of shit movies, and actualy GOOD movies like Dan are overlooked BECAUSE of said piece of shit movies.

The studio is not disappointed in how Steve's movie opened. They were hoping it would open at #2 and it did. Nobody ever thought it would do better than the latest Saw sequel. It was by far the best gross for an adult film on Halloween weekend ever. As far as Evan Almighty it was a disappointment but did hang in there much better than anyone had expected after the disappointing opening weekend. It was not expected to do $100 million domestically after its open but it did reach that amount. It has grossed $71 million overseas so far. The film will probably end up breaking even after factoring DVD, cable etc. which is nothing to sneeze at for a $175 million production.

I seen the movie and I think it was very hilarious! Steve is funnier than Jim Carey, I think. He's just not that popular yet, I guess. If you havn't seen the movie, don't diss it. It was really good! I'm sure alot of retards on here will say "Dan in Real Life was TERRIBLE" and I can guarentee that probably havn't even seen it. Don't start insulting an actor who stays out of trouble and actually has talent.

Dan in Real Life was only playing at 1,900 theaters. Making $12 million at 1,900 theaters is very good.
Most wide releases are in over 2,500 theaters.
Ok Perez, his movie made $12 million the first week, Angelina -A Mighty Heart -made $8 million in 12 weeks and they had to pull the movie away from theatres. But of course, you never reported her gigantic failure.
Having saying that, I agree with you, I think this guy is overrated and he may be a good for a secondary role but never a lead. Jim Carrey is a true star, not only in comdey but in drama as well. Give him any role and he will do it. I miss him a lot.
