Carrie Underwood's new CD has done even better than we predicted!
Carnival Ride is the #1 album in the U.S., having sold a staggering 527,000 copies during its debut week.
This is the American Idol winner's first #1 album.
Her new disc also bests her previous effort, 2005's Some Hearts, which debuted to 315,000 in its first week.
The total is also the best sales week for a female country artist since Shania Twain's Greatest Hits started with 530,000 in November of 2004.
This was a good week for country music! In a first for the Billboard 200, three country debuts occupy the Nos. 1-3 slots on the chart, led by Underwood's Carnival Ride.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand opens at #2, selling 112,000.
Country singer Gary Allan's Living Hard enters at #3 with 69,000 copies.
Underwood's debut of 530,000 copies is DOUBLE what Kelly Clarkson’s latest CD, My December, sold in its first week.

I love when american idol winners kick ass. It's like they REALLY deserve it. Regular celebs SUCK! Go Carrie!!! Make that changalang..$$$$
It was a predictable sales week with all the hype and promotion. I thought she would actually sell more.
Lets not go overboard here, she isn't even close to Shania's massive world records.
Shania has sold over 80 million worldwide with only 3 cd's.
Shania is the only artist in history with 3 diamond albums.
Shania holds the world record for biggest selling female album of alltime which is COME ON OVER, album alone sold over 39 million worldwide.
Shania even sold 872,000 her first week with her UP album and it had 100 million dowloads of songs before it was released.
So while she is doing okay and is expected to with all the hype,promotion and exposure, she is far,far from the level a huge icon like Shania who set the standard nobody will come close to.
this isn't surprising since country music is one of the biggest markets out there in music. middle america, hello?
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss teaming up is just awesome. Too bad the kiddies have no idea how superior they are to the rest of the charts. Led Zep frontman and a bluegrass legend? That will musically be the greatest record of the year!
Re: Shireen – Krauss is bluegrass/folk, and is called country just because people need to call it something. Savvy as she is musically, it is awesome. Most people only know her from that Keith Whitley cover, but her music is far the overproduced pop BS on country radio. She also does Warren Haynes's XMas Jam quite often.
Why do you always have to compare Kelly and Carrie. Two different artists, two different musical genres. Understand Carrie = country, Kelly = pop/rock.

How can you praise Carrie Underwood and her music, yet state "Although we don't really care for LeAnn Rimes or her music…?" LeAnn Rimes is a song writer, a better vocalist, and all-around more talented that Carrie Underwod. Carrie is gorgeous and is doing very well..but she won American Idol. How much easier can it get for someone?
Rascal Flatt's album topped Carries though and Perez you didn't mention that!
Basically, I love Carrie Underwood. I feel she has the capability to be someone great in the music industry, but right now, she is raw talent, a little rough around the edges. Faith Hill and Martina McBride started out the same way, and look at them now. I personally am not a fan of Shania Twain for the pure and simple fact that she wanted to leave country music to explore pop … pop rejected her, and so she wanted to come back to country with her tail between her legs.
As for Kelly Clarkson … she started out great, but look at her now. She tries to go and write her own album, and it sinks. They had to cancel her tour b/c it was such a bomb. Everyone here saying, "Why do you insist on comparing these two artists" then follow with a long list of their stats is a total hypocrite. Get over yourself!
AI gave Carrie a great start, helping her skip all the rough spots many artists go through. Then again though, isn't that the whole point??? If she is truly as untalented as many of you say, it will show. I think Kelly Clarkson has a great voice, but she needs to leave the writing to those who know what they are doing, or at least let them toy with her songs a tad.
Oh, and I have the record as well, and other than "Last Name", it's flawless. I definitely agree that "Last Name" was horrible … desperate attempt at portraying the aftermath of "Before He Cheats" … as if saying, this is what I do after.
