Halle Berry Upsets Diabetics

Maybe it's the hormones from being pregnant, but Halle Berry has lost her mind.

The actress has been quoted saying that she was a Type 1 diabetic but now she has been able to ween herself off insulin to be a Type 2. SOMETHING THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

Pregnant HALLE BERRY is winning her battle with diabetes, thanks to a healthy diet and good living. The actress was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after she passed out while shooting a TV show called Living Dolls when she first arrived in Hollywood. But the disease has now dropped to Type 2 diabetes because Berry is no longer "insulin dependent". She says, "I've managed to ween myself off insulin, so now I like to put myself in the Type 2 category."

Such an assertion is outraging many diabetics.

Type 1 diabetes means your pancreas is dead. It will never ever work again. You will always need insulin, unless there is a cure.

Type 2 means your pancreas is not dead. It still has life and with proper diet you can live without being on insulin.

No matter how much weight you lose or what you cut out of you diet, you can not change Type 1 diabetes, which is what Berry claims she's been able to do.

"If you come off insulin, then you were always a Type 2," a medical expert tells PerezHilton.com. "She is feeding into all the confusion in the world."

Give her a break. I have diabetes… but have never been diagnosed as a 1 or 2… For the last ten years, I have had doctors go back and forth on my diagnoses. I am on an insulin pump. I am currently 37 weeks pregnant and 1 or 2, it's no piece of cake being pregnant with diabetes.. either way.

Even the causes of the two types of Diabetes are different, the medical community has actually being debating changing the name of type 2 because it is so different from Diabetes type 1. My brother has type 1, Halle must had had type 2 the whole time, because she would be dead without insulin. You can't wean yourself off of insulin, you can alter your diet to use less but my brother runs marathons and is in excellent shape and he has to use insulin every single day. I just hope some type 1 diabetic out there doesn't think they could be like Halle because they could end up blind, in a coma, or dead.

Halle Berry has always been Type II. You can not ween yourself off of insulin if you have Type I. Please go to www.jdrf.com for more information. I'm sure my 9 year old daughter who takes 7 shots of insulin a day just to stay healthy would love to ween herself off the shots, but it is an impossibility. You can not regulate Type I by diet or lifetstyle choices. Herbs and diet supplements are not a cure for Type I either. Obviously, Halle's doctors were greatly confused when they diagnosed her with Type I. I'm glad though that she has her Type II diabetes in such tight control. And for all you folks that think Gestational Diabetes is even comparable to Type I, you are sadly mistaken. Gestational diabetes goes away after pregnancy, hence the name: GESTATIONAL. True, there are some folks that go on to develop MODY or Type I but they are separate and distinct diseases from Gestational Diabetes. Get a clue. You can't cure Type I. Period.

Re: Sarah – Yeah, or when she passes the DR3, Dr8, Dr11 or whatever HLA to her kid and then treats the kid with a raw diet to cure it! I am also a celiac (lots of type 1 are!) and the only fix for that is a gluten free diet, so it is not that diet cannot help a disease, it just cannot cure this one! Diet helps alot, but insulin is the key here! Oh, and losing your sight, or other organs to poorly managed type 1 is really an issue….

She should know if she's diabetic 1 or 2….and if she says she's 2, then I believe her. And yes, you can go from 1 to 2 and vice versa. Medicine is that advanced.

Re: TD – Exactly Halle would be the first in human history to live without any insulin, because that is what happens in type 1, so far you can only live without insulin for a short period of time. Insulin doesn't come in food! She can eat her way to healthy insulin levels if her body doesn't produce it!!!!

Diabetes runs in my family & I have several friends who have. I know several people who were on insulin and were able to get off it by improving their diet, getting more exercise, and taking some of the newer meds that are available.

Re: tg – You are totally wrong. There is NO CURE for Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is caused by an autoimmune response by the body. The person's own body destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Once they are gone, they are gone. There is no bringing them back (unless a cure is found)

People who claim that you can cure diabetes already, thwart the efforts of those trying to raise money to find that cure.

If there was a cure for Type 1 diabetes do you think I'd prick my 5 year old's fingers with a needle 12 times a day to test his sugar? Do you think he'd be wearing an insulin pump 24 hours a day seven days a week?

Your right, there is a cure. I'm just withholding it from my son because I like sticking him with needles.

There is no cure for Type 1 diabetes.

I don't think shes done any harm, Type 1 is usually called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes and Type 2 is usually termed adult-onset diabetes or noninsulin-dependent diabetes

You can control type 1 with diet only, many people do, I think she just means shes gone from being dependent on Insulin to not being dependent on it.

Your pancreas doesnt have to be completely destroyed to have type 1, it can be damaged but with limited function…..give the poor pregnant woman a break.

Re: azratcat – No, your doctors have definitive tests to check for antibodies to DEFINE your diabetes. They are not back and forth, you are. Get a new doctor if you don't understand. The health of your child depends on accuracy here. The genes can be passed. Also, the fact that you are on pump tells me you are probably dx'd with type 1. FIND OUT, don't be stupid! A missed Dx can cause untold problems for the children that you have. I know, i almost lost a child to type 1 because I had been given such poor information. In fact, i almost lost my own life to bad medical Dx…get your facts straight and live..good luck on the baby and good job for not going early due to the diabetes (I did with a 30 week and a 31 week preterm babies).

My husband is a type 1 diabetic who has been since he was 9 and had a father with the same disease. YOU CAN NOT wean yourself off insulin unless you are a type 2 diabetic. Maybe she has always been and is just STUPID enough to not know that. I guess some people are and I was told this at Stanford University just this tuesday. My husband had to take a test to confirm he was type 1 diabetic because the Dr. told us some people confuse the two. He is trying to get a kidney/pancreas transplant and needs to prove he is in fact type 1. DUH! you really should know this!

I had type one diabetic and NO it is wrong to say that your pancreas is totally dead..in my case it was kinda like a temporary paralysis and i suffered thru 3X a day of insulin when i was 14 years old. I was taking insulin without even knowing that my pancreas started working and i went into hypo all the time. Anyway to cut a long story short, I am still a type one diabetic and i only take pills once a day and I follow a proper diet. She just said that she would like to put herself into type 2 (non insulin dependant)..and there r ways to ween yourself off insulin!

JULIE GOOD LUCK TO YOUR HUBBY. THIS DISEASE SUCKS BIGTIME…HOW MANY TYPE 2 NEED TRANSPLANTS? NOT MANY. CIRCULATING ANTIBODIES DESTROY YOUR ORGANS, LIKE TYPE 1 DIABETES, THYROID DISEASE, CELIACS, AND RA ARTHRITIS…THIS IS WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. ONLY IN CELIACS DISEASE HAVE WE STOPPED THE ANTIBODY DESTRUCTION WITH DIET BY GOING GLUTEN FREE. AND THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT IN THAT DISEASE. THESE DISORDERS RIDE ON GENES IN COMMON TOO, SO IF YOU HAVE ONE, OFTEN YOU WILL HAVE SOME OF THE OTHERS. THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH TYPE 2 AS FAR AS I KNOW.

Stuid actresses that don't have any education or understanding of science make me so mad! I have a PhD in Biology so let me explain to Miz Halle what's going on with her Type I diabetes: she cannot produce any insulin b/c her pancreas lost the ability to do so. Irreversibly. But, her fetus is producing insluin and it's getting into Halle's blood stream. So, it SEEMS that she is "cured", but this is only temporary thatnks to her baby's insulin. As soon as she gives birth, she'll be diabetic again. IDIOT!

It's in the same category of stupidity as the actresses that "cure" their cancer with herbal tea. So many unwitting people listen to them and think it's the gospel.

    133

in reading over all of your comments, you are all fucking morons.

type 1 diabetes - no cure - islet cells in the pancreas stop producing insulin and you need to inject insulin to live. NO CURE. you can take less insulin if you have a good diet and work out but, again, NO CURE.

type 2 diabetes - your islet cells still produce insulin but not enough to function properly. it can be controlled by diet and exercise, but in most cases, needs to be treated with insulin.

2 different diseases - you CAN'T go from being a type 1 to a type 2. impossible. no. it's like going from being a Korean man to a Hispanic man.

I am a type 1 diabetic and you are all assholes.

Re: Being Dumb is a Disease – ummm yes, i'm halle's doctor, but i'm in nursing school. it's too bad that there are people who have the ability to do something of benefit and choose not to. however, i don't rule out that possibly that because of her status, she may have access to some cutting-edge research or procedure (they have done successful islet-cell transplants, etc.) and maybe this quote was taken out of context somehow, i don't know. i'm not calling her names. what i can tell you is that life with diabetes is really sad and seeing what my little girl goes through really, really stinks, and it's unfortunate that people might now have the misconception that "oh, well she can be cured, i heard that halle berry was". and as you can see, i am not a regular poster because i didn't even click on the "reply to this" button the first time… sorry and dummy me. i'm not attacking her, but at best it's an unfortunate situation, and obviously hitting close to home, it's upsetting for me. in my opinion, it would be like britney making comments on how best to parent toddlers.

Wow, she needs to get a better doctor b/c this is just impossible. As the article says, Type 1 means your body doesn't make insulin, period. You can't change it, you always have to supply your body with insulin through shots or an insulin pump. I am 22 years old and have type 1 (diagnosed at 14) and i spend a lot of time explaining type 1 to my friends and people I meet (most people only know about type 1) Thanks for REconfusing everyone, Hally!!!!! 47. Plumeria says – reply to this

    147

I'm the mom of a Type I child. My son would die within hours without the insulin he gets every few minutes from his insulin pump. The reason what Halle said is potentially damaging is that lots of people (especially children) with diabetes are not what is called "needle compliant" - in other words, they don't like needles! I saw her say this on Inside the Actors Studio and my first thought was that she was holding out a very false hope to people (kids) who are insulin dependent and might want to believe they could also wean themselves off of insulin. She has been saying similar not-very-educated things about diabetes for years.

On the other hand, I have heard physicians make similarly ignorant comments to my child. If Ms. Berry would only get educated about her own disease and the diabetes of others, she could be a powerful spokeswoman for the disease.

It just means your pancreas does not produce insulin. Insulin is needed to produce glucose to sugar. The pancreas is not dead its the pancreatic beta cells that do not produce insulin.
They are two different types of diabetes. Type 2 is adult onset you cant have type 1 then go to type 2.

Your pancreas stops producing insulin. Type 2 your pancreas produces insulin but doesn't use it right. Get your heads out of your asses and learn something. Do you really think I have my four year old daughter on an insulin pump for over 2 years because I felt like it?? It is IMPOSSIBLE to go off insulin for a type 1 diabetic!! If someone was on insulin, lost a LOT of weight, and no longer needs insulin, they are TYPE 2, I don't care what you say, its TYPE 2!! If you think it can be cured by some chinese whatever, I want to see facts, I want to see proof..

Type 1 and Type 2 are two TOTALLY different diseases! you don't get downgraded to type 2 or upgraded to type 1.. Type 1 Is an Auto-immune disease, type 2 is more of a life-style, diet and excerise can control it, although there is definitely a genetic component..

Okay, 1st type 1 and type 2 share the same name but they should not be in the same disease catagory. The stupid media always talks about diabetes and they never specify which type. 90-95% of them are type 2 and this pisses me off. Now, Halle Berry is saying she cured herself. Thus, the idots who do not know what diabetes is and those who are not educated on it are going to tell me to cure it. Not possible, I would have cured myself of this disease a LONG time ago if it was an option. She just doesn't like that type 2 has a negative image and if she was type 1 she would need more insulin when preggers rather than less. THIS IS CRAZY TALK!

Re: Zoe – those two people that have type 1 in that raw movie are really type 1, they are just having a "honeymoon" period since they were recently diagnosed. Many people in the beginning stages still have beta cells working so if they eat little carbs they require little or no insulin. Just wait though, the honeymoon will end and they will be on insulin. Sergio has been quoted to say he developed diabetes at different ages-he is full of shit and is just trying to sell his book. Trust me, I do natural remedies for everything so this is something I looked into. We still eat fairly healthy in my family since my son will be predisposed to heart disease. He is underweight so this has nothing to do with McDonalds like they say in the "raw" movie.

I'm sorry, I just can't help laughing at the use of the word "WEEN" when "wean" is correct. So Halle doesn't know something, big deal. It's not like that really affects anyone else — mean, if you can't improve to Type 1 from Type 2, you can't. Anyone who is suffering from/dealing with the disease will get the right info and advice from their physician, right? Why can't there just be a call for a correction to what Halle said — I'm sure she would make a statement and apologize for any misunderstanding if asked. And anyone who would take what she says as medical advice (or other statements she makes as love advice, or life advice, or artistic advice, or what-to-do-after-you've-hit-and-run advice, for that matter) is responsible for their own consequences.

Maybe Halle Berry has done what doctors have been unable to do for decades. Or maybe she's a self-important celeb trying to make something bigger than what it really is.

Fiction: Halle Berry went from type I diabetic to type II diabetic - She's such a strong-willed person that she defies human biology

Fact: She was either misdiagnosed as a type I diabetic or she was a type II diabetic that did need insulin (some do, depending on how bad it is) and with weight loss/proper eating has required little to no insulin.

I hate reading shit like this, its insulting to the general public who may not know all the facts about a disease and take what halle berry says to be fact. She should stick to complaining about how bad men have treated her (I'm beginning to see why though)

Stupid shit has been coming out of Halle Berry's mouth for years and years, in fact, pretty much every time she opens her mouth. Who cares, she's irrelevant - a girl who had a nose job and found a career.

I'm saddened and dismayed when I read all the comments from the very uninformed posters on this board. A raw food diet does not cure or prevent Type I diabetes. Period. True, it is a very healthy diet and it works wonders for people with Type II — it won't do a thing for Type I diabetics. (Read the raw foods boards closely and you will notice that the majority of the so-called "cured" type I diabetics were all overweight at diagnosis. Funny thing is that the majority of Type I diabetics are underweight or have lost a fair amount of weight just prior to diagnosis).

If you follow a raw food diet following a Type I diagnosis (a legitimate one– not to be confused with Halle Berry's "so-called" Type I diabetes diagnosis), you will DIE without your insulin. If my daughter so much as misses two shots out of her seven shots per day, she goes into diabetic ketoacidosis. This will kill her. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Type I and Type II Diabetes need separate and distinct names. They are two VERY different diseases. You DIE without insulin if you have Type I. No diet, pill, supplement, herb will cure you. To even suggest that you can go from Type I to Type II is beyond ludicrous and UNPROVEN.

People, please educate yourself about the disease. Type I diabetes and no insulin equals death. PERIOD. Idiots.

Raw food or not, when the portion of your pancreas (The Islet of Langerhans) that makes the insulin producing beta cells are destroyed - you cannot breakdown food. You do not produce the hormone ( insulin) that breaks all carbs in all foods down, Unless of course, u inject insulin -if not, YOU DIE!

I'm one of many members on both sides of the family that was blessed with diabetes. Myself being the first type 1. I got it at age 15 after losing 40lbs in 6 weeks. Type 1 diabetics/ AKA JUVENILE DIABETES REFERS TO A CHILD OR A YOUNG ADULT WHOM CONTRACTS THE DISEASE BECUASE EITHER THEY DON'T PRODUCE INSULIN OR THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM MISTAKES THE ISOLET CELLS AS A DISEASE AND KILLS ALL OF THEM COMING FROM THE PANCREAS. IN THIS CASE YOU TAKE INSULIN, AND DESPITE HER MISUNDERSTANDING, YOU CAN NEVER EVER GET OFF OF INSULIN!

THANK YOU for posting this. As a type 1 diabetic, I am constantly disturbed by the misinformation surrounding diabetes! A normal conversation might go like this:

Yes, I'm diabetic. I know, I'm not fat, but I'm still diabetic. No, I won't outgrow it. No, it's not because I ate too much sugar, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where your immune system kills your pancreas. No, it's not a disease of the kidneys, I said pancreas. No, I'm not a "worse" or "bad" diabetic because I have an insulin pump, I'm a diabetic who likes to stay alive.

    Whew!

So truly, thanks for a bit of CORRECT diabetes info. And shame on Halle Berry.

Actually, it is true. As someone who suffers from diabetes myself, I can attest to this. It IS controversial, but some doctors are able to ween people off insulin injections for the rest of their lives. It was actually pioneered by Dr. Joslin (although strangely enough the Joslin clinic does not endorce this practice). It does Not mean that someone is no longer a Type 1 Diabetic– it just means that are "not an insulin dependent Type 1 Diabetic" and they STILL must monitor their blood sugar levels just as often as they would otherwise.

TG — Just curious, when were you diagnosed with Type I, what was your average A1C? What was your insulin regiment prior to your "cure" and do you still test for Type 1 antibodies? On average, how many times per day did you fingerstick and what were your blood sugar ranges per day? What was your weight at diagnosis and now that you are "cured". Any hypoglycemic episodes, DKA, etc.? Do you have MODY?

I'm fascinated merely for the fact that the "cured" Type I diabetic folks always look like Type II (very rudimentary treatment plan…don't know the lingo, etc.). If you've been around Type I as long as I have, well, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…..

The fact that Ms. Berry has her facts all wrong goes only to show how ignorant many are about this disease. It is a fact that if you're a Type I diabetic, you will die without insulin - Type II is a matter of dieting to help correct it and control. Once you're a diabetic, you're always a diabetic. There's no such thing as from Type I to a Type II. If that were the case, I'd be celebrating with my daughter who is a Type I diabetic.

Celebs making claims of magical cure is not new, I remember some years back watching Luther Vandross on TV saying he is cured from his type 2 diabetes. He went on to say that the medical establishment did not want him to speak up about it.

With the number of type 2 diabetics in the world even a $10.00 per cure will make the person who finds the cure a billions of $$$$$$$$

He finally died from diabetes complications. May his soul rest in peace.

You can ween off of Type 2 diabetes, but never Type 1. So yes it is possible she was just misdiagnosed. Also for the writer, please understand that when you have any form of diabetes, the pancreas is NOT dead, otherwise millions of diabetics would have a purposeless organ in them. It does carry other functions beyond the creation of insulin.

She knows…she didn't make a mistake. She is just being a pussy pants. The first thing they tell you about diabetes is that you are TYPE I which CANNOT BE CURED. YOU CAN'T GO FROM TYPE I TO TYPE II. Type II is for old, fat people, both of which she is not.

That's not what type 1 and type 2 diabetes is at all, Perez! The pancreas isn't necessarily "dead" or "not dead." And besides, more often than I'd like, people are falsely diagnosed with type 1… I suspect this is what happened with Halle… which would explain how she cut back her insulin use.
