Halle Berry Upsets Diabetics

Maybe it's the hormones from being pregnant, but Halle Berry has lost her mind.

The actress has been quoted saying that she was a Type 1 diabetic but now she has been able to ween herself off insulin to be a Type 2. SOMETHING THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

Pregnant HALLE BERRY is winning her battle with diabetes, thanks to a healthy diet and good living. The actress was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after she passed out while shooting a TV show called Living Dolls when she first arrived in Hollywood. But the disease has now dropped to Type 2 diabetes because Berry is no longer "insulin dependent". She says, "I've managed to ween myself off insulin, so now I like to put myself in the Type 2 category."

Such an assertion is outraging many diabetics.

Type 1 diabetes means your pancreas is dead. It will never ever work again. You will always need insulin, unless there is a cure.

Type 2 means your pancreas is not dead. It still has life and with proper diet you can live without being on insulin.

No matter how much weight you lose or what you cut out of you diet, you can not change Type 1 diabetes, which is what Berry claims she's been able to do.

"If you come off insulin, then you were always a Type 2," a medical expert tells PerezHilton.com. "She is feeding into all the confusion in the world."

Re: Megan – Not true! Your family might have been an insulin-dependent type 2, but type 1 the pancreas doesn't produce insulin at all. That's probably what Halle had. She was just misinformed by her doctors and didn't take the time to find out for herself.

Re: Jane – Your mother DOES NOT have Type 1. Type 2 is controllable by diet alone sometimes. And sometimes you need oral medication or even insulin. Type 1 is ONLY controlable by insulin. Get your facts straight. Try visiting WebMD.

Since antiglycemics are by perscription only…obviously it was her physician who changed her treatment. Obviously her blood sugars were stable enough to warrant her physician putting her on oral antiglycemic medication. As an RN who has cared for diabetics for 15 years, I can say this is not news and you are making far too much of it.

Why would this upset anyone? It's her situation. I can't imagine a diabetic doing something because they heard it from Halle Berry. If they did, they deserve to be dead. Are we that ridiculous now that we just look for thing that to piss us off. My Gosh…There are really important things going on in this world…THIS is not one of them.

Thanks Perez for finally printing a piece with some actual redeeming value. Don't think what she said was taken out of context she said what she said on BRAVO and has been quoted many times in giving the story, etc. Yes, she should give accurate information since she is a celebrity, etc.

Regardless of which type she is, she probably said something on the show due to the many comments she's be getting about not mentioning anything about being a diabetic in connection with being pregnant and her age. But instead of talking about the risks in general, she has said nothing. Once again, Halle is missing the boat. I thought that diabetes runs on her father's side, I think with one of her grandmothers . Hers was brought on by partying too much and an improper diet. Can type 2 also be genetic?

Thought diabetics aren't suppose to consume alcohol? Many examples of her on the Internet of her doing so.

She has also talked about eating junk food and been seen on the Internet buying unhealthy food at the grocery store lots of times–don't think she was buying all of that crap for her faygeleh (gay) sperm donor (who even gave her wine as a gift) or her staff. Anyway, someone please enlighten me with my questions? Thanks.

SDMOM–Please take this board's posting with a huge grain of salt. If folks want to believe that Sergei Boutenko "cured" his supposed Type I, then all the better for them. You and I know that they are sadly misinformed. At the time Sergie was erroneously diagnosed with Type I, the medical community was not used to diagnosing children with Type II. Had he truly had Type I, he would have died without insulin. Read his bio — he was overweight, did not eat healthy and he wasn't exactly the star athlete now was he? Typical Type II!! Type I diabetic children are typically quite thin at diagnosis (in fact, most could stand to GAIN weight). I've written Sergei several times and he does not respond. What's he hiding? Why won't he take a Type I antibody test? The proof is in the pudding so to speak.

Raw food diets do not cure/prevent Type I. How could you possible explain the fact that second and third generation raw food dieters develop Type I? Type II can clearly be managed with a raw food diet. I'm not disputing that, but for those folks out there that say that Type I can be reversed by lifestyle or dietary changes, you are grossly mistaken.

Lack of education is dangerous. Children DIE from undiagnosed/misdiagnosed Type I. I urge folks to get informed before you lose a child to Type I.

Many of you have never been touched by diabetes. For 22 years I have lived with Type 1. It is an autoimmune disease that killed ALL the beta cells in my pancreas. I will be on insulin for the rest of my life unless there is a cure found. It is often assumed that if you take insulin you are a Type 1 diabetic. Not true. Insulin is also used to treat Type 2, along with diet & oral medications. Sometimes a Type 2 may make enough lifestyle changes to stop taking insulin. This is IMPOSSIBLE with Type 1. Trust me, I would give ANYTHING to live without this disease. I don't just take my doctor's word for stuff. I research. I have read medical journals. I can assure you that Halle didn't take some "miracle drug" or some "herb" to reverse her type 1 diabetes. She was a misdiagnosed Type 2 who was on insulin. Period. Perez, thanks for pointing this out. I just wish Halle, who is supposed to be a spokes person for a diabetes medical company, would make a public apolagy and explain that she was misinformed. Too much ignorance about a disease that effects 7% of the American population (only 10% of these are type 1 diabetics, the other 90% are type 2). In 2020, it is expected that 33% (1/3rd) of the population will be diagnosed with diabetes. You'd better start learning now, so you know what to do if it hits you. For those of you interested in learning about diabetes FACTS, please visit JDRF.com or diabetes.org Both are excellent sources of factual information about diabetes.

ok there perez. u seem to know shyt about diabetes, so just stop right there. there are clinical studies that HAVE shown evidence of the pancreas of Type 1 diabetics to stimulate the production of the hormone, isulin. as a type 1 diabetic, i would know that my pancreas isn't dead, it's just the isulin producing part of the pancreas that is no longer effective. if your pancreas DIED, so would u. get ur facts straight, before spewing off as if u've got a fuckin MEDICAL DEGREE.

my brother has type 1 and the doctors said its not curable if you get off the insulin you will become extremely sick…so she is still a type 1 diabetic

    312

    Re: Thanks Perez
Type 1's can drink alcohol they just have to be extremely careful. As far as the junk food a type 1 can eat what ever they want. A carb is a carb it doesn't matter if it comes from an apple or a snickers bar. As long as it is covered with insulin it doesn't matter.

The type of diabetes does matter because type 1 is a different disease then type 2. All the people that say that type 1 can be cured by diet and exercise are crazy in my opinion. My children's pancreaes does not make any insulin how are you going to make up for that??? by not eating anything with carbs in it…straight protein. My children's blood sugars vary with stress, excitement and the change of wind directions. Those factors can not be controled with diet and exercise. And speaking of exercise my daughter can drop 100 points in BS with 20 mins of exercise…we give her all the appropriate foods prior and just depends on which way the wind blows her BS will drop.

    313

Like all the other people here, it is not true you can do that. I have been a diabetic for 4 years and that has never been true. Type 2 occurs in people who dont take care of themselves and have an unhealthy diet, so really what halle is saying is shes unhealthy and what not, and no your pancreas is NOT dead it just doesnt produce insulin…..

  14. Hannah says – reply to this

    314

Actually, there have been people that have been able to do this. It is very rare but it happens. Medical science is still developing and things happen all the time that doctors cannot explain. 24. misrule says – reply to this

    324

Well, Dr Perez….seems you're a little giulty of spreading the ignorance yourself! Recent evidence suggests that the classifications of type 1, type 2 diabetes are outdated, and that diabetes can in fact be a "Spectrum" disorder much in the way of Autism - as has been evident with a recent surge in people being diagnosed with both "types" of diabetes … also there are now 'types' of diabetes that seem to sit about mid-way between the old classifications of type1 and type2. I would suggest that untill you have a bit more information on the situation you refrain from comment and try not to spread confusion and ignorance about a serious disease. You have little knowledge of the medical treatments she may have been undergoing to help manage this disease and the steps she has taken to help "cure" herself, and are obviously ignorant of the latest medical research into this disease.

As if your ignorant comments about Hugo Chavez weren't infuriating enough!!! Stick to bitching about fashion and celebrities, and leave science and politics to those who actually have an informed opinion, rather than blurting out the latest propaganda and further spreading ignorance - just because you have a 'voice', does not give you the right to spout an opinion on every single subject!

    326

Diabetes is more complex than just the body's inability to produce insulin. The folks who have successfully been healed of autoimune diseases did more than just change their diet and exercise more. They also worked on themselves on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. They literally changed their minds, hearts, spirits and hence, their lives. A holistic approach considers humans as much more than just a body with parts.

Stress, sleep deprivation, depression, a chaotic environment, lack of loving support, poor nutrition(refined, cooked foods/no raw sun cooked foods), refined sugar, toxic chemicals (fluoride, drugs, etc.), cows milk vs mothers breast milk, and many more factors contribute toward disease.

To reduce a complex disease like diabetes to just the need for insulin is not considering the whole person.

    328

Um…Perez…it is possible to change your need for insulin based on the food you eat. The medical short form for Type 1 is IDDM, or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus…the Medical short form for Type 2 is NIDDM, or Non-insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus. Ya know, she's no Doctor…those terms can be confuing! She may very well think she's a Type 2…I mean she is Non-insulin Dependent! And…you CAN go from being a Type 2 to a Type 1!!!!!

    329

Re: Abigail Pritchard RPN – I'm not sure if you are a real RPN. If you are, you need to do some study. You would learn that IDDM & NIDDM are outdated terms. Very outdated. Like 1987 outdated. You sound like the nurse that tried to tell me I didn't need my insulin unless I ate something… hmmmm, no wonder out health care system is so screwed up in the US. If you really are an RPN, you are a prime example of why people should educated themselves about their disease.

HELLO PEOPLE! My family is proof that miracles do work. My grandma and her sister were both diagnosed as type 1 20 years ago for aunt and 5 years ago for grandma.

My aunt got sick and went into the hospital, I have medical power of attorney for both, I had her re-tested to determine type of diabetes.. we were told type 1. After 15 years and at the time my grandma was diagnosed as type 1 I decided to have my aunt re-tested yet again. The test was negative for diabetes period full stop. I did not believe it, I took her to a different hospital using a different lab and got the same result negative for diabetes, her pancreas was supplying her needs again. The pancreas can go dormant from injury or infection we were told, and in some cases can begin to secrete insulin again. Her A1c3 tests have varied between 6.6 and 7.8 at its highest for the past 5 years. My grandma has recently been retested by two separate labs with the same result, she is off insulin too.

Not so far fetched. I have a close friend do the impossible through diet alone. No more insulin (which speeds the aging process anyway). Insulin is amazing and has helped millions who suffer this disease live extrodinary lives; but western medicine does not allow for the convention of eastern diet principles when applied to healing the body of a harmful diet.

well, a human pancreas does much more then produce insulin. the only problem with us, type 1s, is that our "alive" pancreases stopped producing one of the hormones it normally makes. but, you are correct, there is no cure to this date. holistic and natural remedies as far as i know are bull shit; there is no way for a diabetic pancreas to regenerate insulin cells, unfortunately. i used to look at halle berry and feel a little bit better about myself (a young women with type 1) but, if this information is accurate, look at her as just another hollywood idiot. plus, you think if there was a "cure" she would endorse it and help other type 1s have the same success as she as had, because taking injections multiple times a day is not fun, which i'm sure she knows all about.

I am the aunt of a Juvenile diabetic (otherwise known as Type 1). Since the alpha, beta and delta cells of her pancreas were destroyed and she no longer can produce ANY insulin, she is attached to an insulin pump 24 hours a day. She must test her blood sugars, pricking her fingers with a needle lancet 10 to 12 times a day: before breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks (for which she must weigh, count carbohydrates and give insulin for all food eaten); before and after each hour of exercise or play, as well as two hours after eating to see how well the insulin meshed with her food and prevent lows, AND 12 midnight, 2:30 a.m., 6 am to prevent lows overnight which may cause seizure, coma and death. That is the reality of Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes — now called Type 1 because adults can also get it. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL TO "WEAN" HER OFF INSULIN. There is no way out for any Type 1 diabetic. That is why we must work so hard to find a cure. Her childhood has been stolen from her. If there is ANY way to "wean" a Type 1 off insulin, I ask Halle to share exactly how she did it. There will be a LONG LINE of people lining up to wean themselves off insulin, particularly in Third World countries, where people are dying because they can't get it!

I'm a doctor, and you've got your medical facts straight. Halle was misdiagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic years ago, when in reality she was probably just a severe Type 2 diabetic. The underlying causes for the two types of diabetes are very different. One is usually an autoimmune reaction that destroys the cells of the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is a gradual insulin resistence that develops over time due to metabolic reasons. I think Halle's current doctor didn't explain it clearly to her when she was weaned off insulin. She was really misdiagnosed by the first doctor but it's understandable she wouldn't know this and therefore assumed her diabetes had changed "types".

I know three people close to me who have done the same thing. Its not hard. Its a huge lifestyle change, but its possible. Just think of how much money the US would lose if they found the "cure." The same cure that is probably $30 at your local health food store.

Re: Organic – You are an asshole, its not hard? Why don't you take care of a type 1 diabetic child for one day.. do you really think that I want to see my child suffer? that I want to see her bruised arms, legs, belly and bum from her insulin pump site changes, do you think I enjoy pricking her finger 15times a day to check ger blood glucose levels. You have no fucking idea what you are talking about.. Until you live it you should keep your mouth shut. The world if full of idiots, we don't need anymore!

Re: Tina – She isn't "honeymooning", she was diagnosed years and years ago when she was just starting out on some cheesy TV sitcom.

She doesn't want to be associated with Type II because of the "fat" connotation it carries, I fear. Type I is so much rarer and more dramatic - and a thin people's disease. More suitable for a celeb. And if you cure yourself - you're even more "special".

    364

Re: Organic – organic - YOUR AN ASSHOLE and an uneducated one at that. You can't cure type 1 by spending 30 bucks at Whole Foods. If that was the case, I would have been "cured" long ago. Most type 1's eat a very healthy diet, count their carbs religiously, take their blood sugars obsessively and bolus (inject) their insulin to cover their own specific needs. They also exercise religiously to prevent complications in later life. Most type 1's are required to take classes with diabetes educators and dieticians who work with their endocrinologists. IT'S REQUIRED THAT WE DO THAT.
WE KNOW OUR SHIT when it comes to our disease because if we didn't we'd be dead.
Get a clue before you make such idiotic blanket statements.

Re: Kimball : thanks for answering what I already thought but was just double checking. Have several family members, friends and neighbors who are T1 or T2. So, I have some knowledge on the disease.

With all of the negative publicity, I am sure Halle will issue another statement. Wonder how long she will be a spokesman for that diabetic she is a spokesperson for. Not the 1st time excluding the Jewish comment snafu that Halle has put her foot in her mouth whether it's about Breast Cancer (her comment at a Revlon Run/Walk-A-Thon) was sad–what does having diabetes have anything to with BC? Of course, she's not going to say I am here ’cause it's in my contract. Not a good off the cuff speaker as well as her foul up promoting some Ora-B pulsating tooth brush or her comments on Barak Obama—Halle what's his platform—who cares if you'd pick up paper cups for him because he sssssoooo dreamy. Even her comments on Tavis Smiley joking manically about there's going to be no beatings and domestic violence in her home with her child–then she does the sob story thing once again on BRAVO when she's said the same thing in mags. She probably has lied about how the whole WS thing went–doubt it if she's really deaf or DJ was as violent as she says he was.

Re: Jan – Jan - your niece can still have a wonderful childhood. Keep being positive for her and tell her that she must believe that she can be anything she wants in this world, Type 1 won't prevent her from having a good life, but it will make her appreciate all the little things, including having a loving Auntie like yourself. Take it from a person whose been Type 1 since childhood . PS Talk to her parents about enrolling her in a Diabetes camp. It's an awesome experience for any child with TYPE 1 diabetes.

well then you are dumber than halle berry and that is saying a lot. she has said in the past she is a type 1. and yes, i am a nurse. and i never said being a nurse was bad or a profession not to stick up for. i was simply remarking about the ridiculous, stupid things celebrities say, including this comment. you obviously have no children yourself or you would have thought her comments about pregnancy were premature and unfounded. how i talk on this blog is my business, not yours. and it has nothing to do with the care of my patients. so that makes you a censoring asshole. as a registered nurse you should have been outraged and moved and you should have commented on that. i bet you are a poor patient advocate. i bet you don't even know enough about IDDM enough to know that at type 1 who does not take insulin may be bound to lose her fetus. you are irresponsible and should be ashamed. maybe i should call and have your nursing license revoked. like that? that make you feel better????

It wouldn't surprise me if the whole recent Oprah interview was totally bs except w/talking about the movie. Seriously, doubt it if she and her gay boytoy in-vitro sperm donor did it around the clock if at all, please. I'd really be surprised no matter what she or he says if he's really the baby's daddy. F U. We get out of bed every morning- keep our disease in check, and by in check I mean take our blood sugars, eat healthy, bolus our insulin, take our blood sugars, eat healthy, bolus our insulin. WE NEVER GET A BREAK FROM OUR DISEASE. But we live productive lives, have jobs, families, lovers and others. I PERSONALLY HAVE TO LIVE THE LIFE OF STICKING MY SONS FINGERS 8-9 TIMES A DAY UP AT 12AM AND 3AM TO CHECK BLOOD SUGARS. IF HES LOW GET HIM UP FEED HIM. IF HES HIGH WAKE HIM UP STICKING A NEEDLE IN HIS ARM. EVERY MORNING STICKING HIM WITH ANOTHER NEEDLE TO MAKE SURE HE STAYS SAFE ALL DAY. THEN SOMETIMES THAT DOESNT WORK. SIT IN A HOSP. ROOM DOCTORS, NURSES, WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL THEM STICKING IV'S IN HIS ARM. TELLING YOU THEY DONT KNOW THE OUTCOME YET. GIVE MORE MEDS ALL OVER A LITTLE SINUS INFECTION. YOU DONT GET UPSET CAUSE YOU DONT LOOK AT A LITTLE CHILDS FACE A LOOK AT THE FEAR AND TERROR THEY LOOK AT EVERYDAY WHEN THEY SEE THE PARENT COMING AT THEM WITH A NEEDLE AND SAY TO THEM "IM SORRY BUT I HAVE TO DO THIS SO YOU DONT GET SICK AND I LOVE YOU." UNTIL YOU DO THAT EVERYDAY IN YOUR LIFE AND WORRY ALL THE TIME THAT YOUR CHILD COULD DIE BEFORE THEY BECOME A TEENAGE GET MARRIED AND HAVE THEIR OWN CHILDREN. DONT SAY YOU DONT KNOW HOW EVERYONE COULD GET UPSET ABOUT THIS.

  77. Molly - Type 1 Diabetic says – reply to this

    377

Type 1 diabetes is common among younger people hence the name "Juvenile Diabetes" there is no cure. Your pancreas does not create insulin and will never be able to, you will be insulin dependant until they find a cure. Type 2 is common in older people, and also common among obese people, it is not nearly as severe as type 1 and can be controlled with diet, exercise and in some cases pills. Type 2 is also common to women who are pregnant and usually goes away after pregnancy. I used to think Halle Berry was awesome becasue she was literally the only famous Type 1 Diabetic I knew but obviously I was wrong since any educated person would know the difference between the 2 and would be intelligent enough to know there is absolutely NO way you can go from a type 1 to a type 2 it is physically impossible.

  78. Scooter says – reply to this

    378

The whole issue with Halle Berry is this…. If she's embarrassed by her diabetes or wants it kept as private info then fine because it's nobody else's business anyhow but what is pissing off the diabetes community is misinformation and reading some of the post here, it's obvious non diabetics have no clue what they're talking about which means that if Halle does choose to speak about her condition, especially in regards to mass media, then she needs to get her facts straight before opening her mouth. If she can't do that simple task then she'd be doing all of us who have diabetes a huge favor and just SHUT UP. Perez didn't have all his facts straight either but even with the errors, he was more accurate than Halle Berry has been.

Re: k2 – Diabetes camp rocks! Halle should be forced to sit and listen to tiny, thin 7-year-old little girls with genetic, incurable Type I tell about how their stupid neighbors berate them about how they brought on their disease by eating sugary foods. And how well-meaning but ignorant adults hold out false hope by telling them to eat better and exercise so they can "get off the shots". Or how they can't have a birthday snack at school because the nurse only has orders for them to get lunchtime injections, so in addition to the stigma of their disease, they feel left out of fun things.

Those kids are my heros, and I've seen every one of those things happen. Diabetes camp is a great place to meet other T1 kids and feel supported. I have known parents who only sleep through the night during the 1-2 weeks their kids are at camp. Otherwise, it's 3 a.m. sugar checks. I'm sensing a lot of great folks on this thread who can get a drop of blood on a test strip in the pitch dark - I know I can.

DESA Rocks as well. I was there to tell jokes, attended conferences, and learn everything I could about Diabetes, exercise, and medical advancements for type 1's. I also met some really fantastic Diabetic athletes. Maybe HB should have attended one or two of the lectures, she might have learned a thing or two. I doubt it though - she's stupid.

Nutrition is key…I totally agree with ZOE and know real RAW food helps cure ailments in your body.
People don't like to hear that they have to exercise and not eat all the sugar and processed foods they want. It's just easier to medicate, especially when convinced by doctors it's the olny way. Try medicating your body with what you put in it.
