Oprah is working hard to make right the awful situation that happened in her school in South Africa.
One of the matrons at the academy for girls was accused of sexually molesting one student and physically abusing others.
Oprah flew to South Africa with her own investigators after she found out about the allegations. The suspect was fired and the school principal was suspended for not alerting Winfrey of the situation sooner.
Additionally, Oprah bought each girl a cell phone so that they could individually call her if anything else should happen in the future.
Somehow we doubt she gave them her own personal number!
An arrest is expected in this unfortunate incident, local papers are reporting.

She's just trying to put makeup on this blemish to her reputation. She had the school built and she should have had the teachers and matrons background checked. You can't just throw money into a school and sit back take the credit for your "Humanitarian Good Deed." The other side of that is you have to take the blame for whatever happens when your "good deed" goes wrong.
Bless Oprah, she really does care. Its unfortunate what happened and the perpetrator should pay for such a terrible crime, but I hope this doesn't overshadow the excellent work Oprah has done in the region.

I think you're wrong about her trying to 'put make-up on it' - I think she's trying to right a terrible wrong that she possibly feels partially responsible for. You can do as many background checks as you like but sick people who abuse children can always slip through nets.
Oprah cannot be held responsible for what happened to the poor girl who was allegedly abused but she can be applauded for making such a big effort to rectify the situation.

I've read, in a few reliable places, even, that the girls were given a number to reach her directly, and that it was one of her own personal use numbers. I'm inclined to believe it, too. It just seems like something Oprah would do.

Actually, the press reported a few days ago that she DID give her personal phone number and email to all of the girls and their parents. If they were smart, they'd sell that shit to somebody and make some mad money! I'd love to prank call Oprah!!!

It is horrible, what happened, and I'm sure as an abuse survivor, she was devastated after learning all this.

Oprah's more on the ball than American Law Enforcement Agency! She was pretty quick to do what she could to start the ball rolling on fixing the situation. It's so sad b/c you know she's just beating herself up more than anybody in the tabloids or gossip site could. This abuse is one of the things she was trying to prevent…. she was an abused child herself! People should stop comparing the school to a prision. She's just trying to make sure these girls have a better life, and where they are that involves a major struggle to overcome huge odds against them. Maybe they need to be a little removed from the negative factors outside. It sounds like some of the boarding schools in first world countries… maybe the SA parents just aren't used to that type of system. However, I'm not going to claim to know very much about what they do or don't know… I'm not a South African.

Oprah is doing everything she can to help what happened! And just because someone's background doesn't state child molester, doesn't mean they don't feel up little kids! Oprah loves those girls!!!
Maybe if she hadn't initially set up rules that prevented the girls from contacting their families by phone or email more than once a week, this wouldn't have gotten so bad. Don't you all remember the last time the school was in the news for being too strict and not allowing parents to even contact their own children? Oprah's response then was that the complaining parents could take their kids out of the school if they didn't like it. Well this is what happens when the kids aren't allowed to talk to another adult. They get abused and no one finds out until one of them runs away.

I live in SA and some of our most reliable papers have published interviews with some of the girls at the school - they say that Oprah did give them her personal direct number and told them to call anytime, day or night. I think she really means well and has offered the girls an incredible opportunity, but unfortunately people let her down.

I tend to disagree. I think she probably did give the girls her personal number. As much as I hate Oprah, her mission to eridicate sexual molestation of children is her #1 priority and I think she trusts the girls more than the people she hired. I think her phone number is probably in speed dial.

I worked with Oprah as her assistant at a concert in Rome in 2004. She really was a nice woman who was very generous and not fake at all. She could have let her publicist speak on her behalf. She could have waited a week and then visited the school. But she got on the ball asap. The response to Katina should have been so quick…Excuse her for wanting to open a school in Africa. She's done so much for people in The States. Excuse her for feeling bad about what happened. She was molested…and for someone on this post to reply that her being molested as "hot" is disgusting. The fact of the matter is that she has transformed and put a lot of issues we only think about out for us to discuss. Namely weight issues. When all is said and done someone of her wealth does not have to help a single soul if they don't want to. I am just glad she has choosen to do so. I have never been an Oprah fan and think she often becomes passionate about causes without really researching or understanding them; domestic violence for one. I do however feel that she was is and always will be a child advocate and that her heart is in the right place on this one. Have any of you ever dreamed of somethin wonderful that you would love to do- "if I had the money"? I think this is that dream for Oprah and that she is taking personal responsibility for its failures as well as applauds for its sucesses. It is my understanding that she personally interviewed and hired staff at the school; this one slipped through. I really doubt any future staff will be anything less than fabulous.

I live in Southern Africa myself - I don't feel that just giving all the time is the answer for this continent - rewarding people for using what they are given does much more. I just don't think that putting these girls in a fancy school and then buying each one a cell phone when something like this happens does anything to further their growth.
You can't just throw money into Africa and sit back and hope it gets used properly either - that's something that has to be so closely monitored all the time… there are just waaaay too many cases of misuse.
Oprah has done so much for others in this world more so than any of us could ever say or do. It is unfortunate that there are a lot of jealous people with nothing positive to say. If you have nothing nice to say you should keep your mouths shut.
