Oprah Winfrey released the following statement on Friday, following the arrest of a woman accused of being physically and sexually abusive to the girls at her academy in South Africa.
“I’d like to thank the South African Police Services for bringing this investigation at my Academy to a timely resolution. I am grateful for their compassion and sensitivity to the girls during this difficult time. It means the world to me. It is my deepest hope that the accused is brought to justice and that this serves as a reminder that any time a child has the courage to step forward, it is our duty as adults to listen and take immediate action.”

perez initially reported that when parents contacted oprah with complaints she ignored them and told them to be grateful for this oppertunity she was giving them. moral of the story for all would-be educators, from an educator: listen to the parents. oprah has done a lot, but she doesnt know the first thing about how to be a responsible teacher educator.

I agree with you 100%. I don't understand people who bash Oprah. Like you said, she does a lot of good. And whether she owns multi-million dollar homes or not is irrelevant to anything else she has done. By opening this school she wanted to give young girls, who wouldn't otherwise have a chance at getting an education, a good education and make them strive for more in life. Something that happened at this school could happen anywhere, including here in America [ever hear of teachers having sex with their students? Priests molesting boys?]. It isn't Oprah's fault that any of this happened. You can't predict situations like this. I am just glad she is making the effort to correct what has happened and make sure that the school is a safe place for the girls from now on. People are so quick to bash her, but the majority of those people have never lifted a finger to help anyone but themselves.

America is one of the top countries in the world to get an education. Anyone in this country whether they are rich or poor has the opportunity to get an education. Those that fail to do so bear that responsibility on their own shoulders. We don't live in a country where education [especially for females] is stifled by the government and poverty surrounds us. The fact that she wants girls in South Africa to get a good education is very noble of her. Maybe someday in the future these girls will be great leaders and bring great change into the poverty stricken continent of Africa. We need more of that in this world. The only way to make a change in the world is to educate and that is what Oprah is doing.
That being said, Oprah has done a lot of great things in this country. Perhaps you should do some research on Oprah and all of her charities and her Angel Network. If you do, you'll see that she has built homes for people who have lost their homes in disasters [including victims of Katrina]. I think people that bash her should do some research before they go spewing things out of their ass.

I'm just surprised the staff weren't checked and rechecked ultra thoroughly, especially since she constantly speaks out against child abuse and she herself was abused. It's kind of ironic that this happened in her own school. It seems like it would be hard to keep a total eye on things with all her other commitments and being that she lives in another country. Obviously, she picked the wrong people to run her school. Such a shame. I personally do not like her any more. Not because of this, but because I think her money and power have definitely gone to her head. It has to change a person, at least to some degree. It's good that she helps because she has the choice not to, but it is a tax write off and I find her to be a bit condescending with the "her and the unvierse are one" talk and that's why she's where she's at. There's a lot of good people that will never even come close to her status. However, it is a sad situation and I wish her and her school the best.

Nicely said Oprah, I'm glad she was honest about the incident, rather than trying to cover it up or deny the accusations made by the children. Some celebrities in Oprah's position might not have been so forthcoming about the incident, which goes to show that Oprah has the best intentions for those little girls.
