Oprah Winfrey released the following statement on Friday, following the arrest of a woman accused of being physically and sexually abusive to the girls at her academy in South Africa.
“I’d like to thank the South African Police Services for bringing this investigation at my Academy to a timely resolution. I am grateful for their compassion and sensitivity to the girls during this difficult time. It means the world to me. It is my deepest hope that the accused is brought to justice and that this serves as a reminder that any time a child has the courage to step forward, it is our duty as adults to listen and take immediate action.”

As a South African, I am in 2 minds about this whole thing. I am happy Oprah invested in our country in this way but that money could have gone a long way in helping millions of impoverished black kids who dont have money for school fees (yes, in SA we PAY for our education) and who have no money for food, and have to try to learn on an empty stomach. Taking 400 girls from their communities and putting them in a fancy school, with everything laid on, just alienates those girls when they go back into the community because people will resent them. She could have helped so many more at grassroots level. The other thing that irks me is the fact that this case is already going to court. In south africa you have to wait up to 2 YEARS for any case, including rape and child abuse, to get to court and we only have a 5% conviction rate, but this case manages to get to court in days??? The court case starts on monday!! I love Oprah, but this whole thing should have been handled better.
