Over Before It Began

South Carolina Democratic officials have denied Stephan Colbert's bid to get on the ballot in his home state as a Democrat.

The Comedy Central funnyman, who plays a conservative on his show, filled out an application and paid the $2,500 filing fee on Thursday.

Forty minutes later, top party officials declined his application, saying, "He's really trying to use South Carolina Democrats as suckers so he can further a comedy routine." And Colbert "serves to detract from the serious candidates on the ballot."

If Stephen really wants to run in SC, he can pony up $35,000 to get on the Republican ballot.

Do it. Don't be a cheapo!

      1. The Republicans won't take him either.
      2. If he ponies up the $35k, the republican party keeps it regardless of whether they accept him or not. In other words, they get a free $35k from him. Fuck that!

FUCK the democrats for denying him. ALL the candidates are a joke anyways, regardless of the party. Colbert was actually less of a joke than all of the candidates put together (shown from the fact he got more of the votes that ACTUAL CANDIDATES) and full of less bullshit, sadly even though he is a parody. that part of the show where he went to talk to ACTUAL PEOPLE, like the black chicks in the hair salon and the people in the gun shop was AWESOME. fucking fail for them denying him. he would make a better president than anyone running, even though his show is a joke. this country makes me fucking sad.

I'm perfectly fine with someone CHOOSING to be gay, as long as he marries a women and has kids like the rest of us. And if he has to flaunt it, there's a place for that in the privacy of his own home. WHICH SHOULD BE A JAIL CELL"

When he has gay right advocates on he acts like a hard core right-wing nut about it so he can point out who retarded they sound… he makes himself look like a moron for opposing gay right to further the cause. Anybody who's willing to do that is definately working for the people.

      31

First of all, Colbert cannot go over $5,000 in this pursuit because federal election laws will then come into play and the sitiuation will become very messy. Therefore, that is one of the reasons Colbert could not cough up $35,000.
Secondly, I applaud Colbert for showing how messed up the political system and electoral process is. Even though it was a joke, Colbert brought a lot of attention to a subject many Americans overlook. Now, maybe Americans will start thinking more seriously about how freely their elected officials are chosen.

Anyway, I adore Mr. Colbert. It's a shame they wouldn't let him on the ballot…scared of a little REAL competition? Sounds like it. And why is he not taken seriously? Regan was an actor and he was president…The governor or California was in Kindergarten Cop for shit's sake.

    42. Catherine says – reply to this

      42

YES! Colbert is an ass, a self-promoting ass. I'm glad the NC democrats take the process seriously. To not do so is to risk another Republican in the White House. Our country and our planet can't take that.

    53. murry says – reply to this

      53

NO COMMENT - You don't have to live in the state to run in a presidential primary. None of the candidates on the ballot live in South Carolina. Take a civics class.

It would sure say a lot for America if all the voting South Carolinians would write him in on the ballot.
In fact, if you live in South Carolina and aren't planning of voting, this should be reason enough to change your mind and take a few minutes at the polls.
Let's face it, he beats any of the other morons whose names are on the ballot.

He can't pay the $35,000 because then he becomes subject to federal campaign law which would prohibit him from talking about his run on his show (the whole point of him running) and would not allow Doritos to be his sponsor. He legitimately can be denied because hes not a viable candidate for the presidency (since he's only running in ONE state, he couldn't actually become president), but, come on! Let him run, it will at least get people interested in the political process and give Colbert fans something to smile about.

      Colbert would split the Democratic
vote and the Party would never stand for that.
The American public is tricked into a two party system
which is just a shell game with two shells.
Both parties want to expand government control
over the people and the internet and talk radio.
The people are too busy fighting with
each other because of party lines to see the big picture.
      .
I am not a Republician and I am not a Democrat.
but feel free to call me names now because I
dare to disagree with your party bosses.

      I support EVERYONE's free speech,
even the name callers who shout down
others to cover the fact that they can not present
their case with logic so they resort to name calling
and calling those who diagagree with them names like
'bigot' and 'facist' just to shut them up.

      .
The American two party system is a joke.
The media keeps the two sides fighting with each
other to sell more newspapers and TV shows.

The new facists of America are those
that want to shut the voices of those that disagree
      with them.
Hitler used to have a group called the "Brown Shirts"
that would go to speeches and rallys and shut down
people speaking in ways Hitler did not agree with.
      .
We have "Brown Shirts" today on many a college campus.
Their job is to "shut down" and "shout down" speakers
      they do not agree with.
      .
Those that do not remember their history
      are doomed to repeat it.

      .
Beware the new breed of "Brown Shirts".
They lurk everywhere, including comment pages on web sites.
