They Mean Business!

tinafeyyyy.jpg

She is so Norma Rae!

30 Rock scribe (and actress) Tina Fey joins her fellow writers picketing outside Rockefeller Plaza in NYC on Monday morning.

The Writers Guild of America is on strike after failing to reach an agreement with producers over issues such as DVD royalties and how much money there is to be made in the Internets.

Similar demonstrations are expected all over Hollywood today.

Fight the power! Demand your money! And, like Gisele says, get paid in Euros!

I'll bet Tina Fey won't have a problem collecting royalties from acting due to the re-runs that will now have to be shown.

I'm willing to be a scab. I can write better than most of the hacks who are on strike now anyhow.

Whoever said "go tina" is on crack. It's disgusting that these people are striking because their six figure+ paychecks just aren't enough. Pakistan is in a state of emergency, children in orphanages around the world are being molested, the government is constanly censoring and monitoring various media outlets. Isn't it funny that suddenly nobody is talking about what happened in Burma? I like perez as much as the next guy…just get a little perspective.

I think its just dumb. They get paid well enough. Its just the typical Unions getting involved with normal business practices. I think the unions have lost their usefulness in this country anyway. I also think its real sad that the Late Night Shows cant go on without their writers AT ALL. Geesh, you mean David and Jay cant come up with some good material to say to people since they have been doing it for so freakin long? Come on guys.

Re: Beren – Yes, it's a real shame about Pakistan, Burma, Darfur and the like. True, those are ALL serious problems. But it doesn't negate the fact that the execs holding back the money from the writers is greedy and wrong. No one should be getting rich on anyone else without paying the proper royalties. Now, if you'd like to start a blog about Pakistan and Burma and Darfur, be my guest. Post a link on Perez so that I can find you. But make sure it's colorful and short, concise paragraphs or you may lose the public's interest. Not mine, of course, because I'm an intellectual.

I think what you all may not understand is that writers don't get paid just to write, they get paid for all the years they spent honing their craft, learning how to write, they get paid for all the dry months where no one is hiring them to write, they get paid because, unlike a lot of people, who choose to stay in their hometowns, work in insurance, become lawyers or accountants, they took a huge risk with their lives, and if they are making sales, it should pay off.

The majority of writers aren't Matt Stone and Trey Parker, they're authentically middle class people, who have enough time to sell maybe 10 screenplays in a lifetime, tops, and, if they're lucky, get a few made.

These are people who were brave enough to take the risk, eat off ramen, pay off massive amounts of debts, get rejection after rejection after rejection and living on someone's roach infested couch for years and years and years without the garuntee of having anything in the end. But even now, having broken into the buisness, they may still live paycheck to paycheck.

All they're asking is that the AMPTP share more in the return. So, like so many other middle class families, we can afford to have the nice life for our families that we have sacrificed so much for.

Re: K – At the expense of everyone else in the industry…
I do agree that they need an extra piece of the pie but at the same time thats the field they chose to be. I live in LA where everyone is a writer, actor, model whatever and you all take the chance of being in this buisness that you might just get one break and thats it. But there are people that work hard everyday to make all of that happen and by going on strike your going to put alot of "Middle class" families in the poor house.

Re: horsehungBoston – As one of the "well paid" writers… obviously you have no clue what we get paid… we are looking for equity in monies… the studios are making GOBS of money off of DVD sales that would not exist without the work of the writers and yet, we get 4 cents per DVD. Just looking for fair compensation… that 4 cent figure was set in 1988 before DVDs were even on the horizon. Why should the studios make ALL the monies off of DVD. Speaking of filthy rich…

Regardless of who is to blame for the strike, there will many individuals who will be economically hurt by this. There are a lot of people whose income is derived from the entertainment idustry and are now out of a job. The writers may be able to afford to get by without working, but there are many more who need that paycheck just to survive. I just hope both sides can reach an agreement quickly.

So why is it that when other industries decide to strike, nobody cares about the other individuals who are collateral damaged by the selfish Union bitches? Do I feel sorry for ANYONE in a union? Hell no!!! Unions are a big reason most of our jobs are going overseas. Why should a company have to deal with a bunch of whiney crybabies who refuse to do their jobs, if they could move overseas to another country where people are GRATEFUL for a job???

Collateral damage during a strike is harmful to more than just the company and the babies striking. These strikes ruin families and livelyhoods. Unions served their time, but that time has passed.
