The Writer's Guild of America released a statement on Friday, criticizing the talk show queen for crossing the picket line.

Now, the talk show queen wants people to really know her side of the story.

In response to the WGA, DeGeneres' publicist released the following statement to PerezHilton.com:

"Ellen has not done anything in violation of the Writer's Guild of America agreement, or the WGA's internal 'Strike Rules.'

Telepictures Productions, through its distributor Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, has contractual obligations to continue to deliver original programming to the 220 stations that carry the program.

We have asked Ellen to come back to work to fulfill her contractual Obligation, as host of the show, because without original programs the stations can move the show out of its time periods or ultimately hold the company in breach of contract. The company, in turn, expects Ellen not to breach her contract to host the show. We also wish to preserve the 135 jobs of the staff and the crew whose livelihoods depend on the show continuing. We regret the Writer's Guild has chosen to strike and we wish for a quick resolution.

It is unfair and incorrect to compare The Ellen DeGeneres Show to late night shows such as Leno, Letterman and Conan, all of which are late night network owned and controlled programming. Ellen is a daytime talk show carried on a syndicated basis across individual television stations, no different than, and in direct competition with, Oprah, Rachel Ray, Phil, Live with Regis and Kelly, Martha, Tyra, Jerry, Maury, and Montel, all of which are in first run daytime syndication and are continuing in production."

I don't see ANYBODY giving Oprah or Rachel Ray or Dr. Phil the same amount of guilt over THEM continuing their shows!! She can't let her fans down. The fans are her meal ticket and have supported her throughout all of her many ups and downs, and like you said… they have paid good money to come and see her! I know I would be pissed if I paid a ton of money to fly across the country to go see her show, and then ended up with nothing! And she's got a staff of hundreds to think about too, who's very LIVES depend on running her show. No show=no paychecks for them, which means no mortgage payments being made, no car payments being made, no food put on their tables, etc. and as somebody who lives practically paycheck to paycheck myself, I would be devestated if some writer's strike put me in a situation where I ended up practically homeless and out of work. I respect what the writers need to do… but if I had a show on tv similar to hers, and it wasn't directly impacted by the strike, I would probably still show up to work every day and keep it going as best as I could so that I could still take care of my staff, AND my fans. Way to go Ellen- keep your head up! Don't let people get you down! You are doing the right thing.

Just because celebrities go out and show their faces people think they are doing everyone else in the business a favour. So many crew members work physically demanding jobs for hours and hours a day to support their families, and now all these hard workers are going without pay for who knows how long…

Did some of you not understand the statement made by the Ellen Show? Late night TV talk shows like Leno and Letterman are owned by the network which puts them in a different category from the daytime programs which are syndicated. Syndicated programs have contractual obligations which have to be met, irregardless of strikes. Daytime syndicated shows are not breaking the Writer's Guild strike rules by continuing their programs. Syndicated shows are not considered "crossing the picket lines" nor are they considered "strike breakers"

Re: retired – Yes, BUT . . . unlike the the other daytime chat fests, Ellen uses a monologue (aka writers to write it)–and now she's writing it herself–thereby, filling in for her "dear freinds" on strike. Yes, she is under a contract to do her show–she doesn't have to do the monologue. I recall she has no problem cancelling her show for 2 days (dissapoint fans ) over a dog she gave away. Re: Fec – syndication means that different stations can buy a show. For example, Oprah, Tyra and the rest of syndicated shows can be on ABC, NBC, or CBS and be shown at different times of the day. Station owned shows means that The Tonight Show can only be seen on NBC, The Late Late Show on CBS and so on. Syndication has nothing to do with being on every day.

Re: Fec – also, syndication doesn't mean daytime. for example, friends, seinfeld, roseanne and the rest of the sitcoms were only shown on their networks (abc, cbs, nbc) then after five years, the reruns of the show can be syndicated…allowing other channels to buy the rights to carry the shows. that's why you see roseanne on nick at night, tbs, or where ever else.

Listen, like her or hate her, Ellen is continuing because everyone in daytime is continuing. She is NOT a late night talk show. And for the record, it is well known in the industry that both Leno and Letterman will be back within weeks, just like Johnny Carson did 20 years ago. And the reason he did it then, and she is doing this now, is to support the rest of their staff, the other 99% of their staff and let them keep their jobs.
