Ellen Speaks!

The Writer's Guild of America released a statement on Friday, criticizing the talk show queen for crossing the picket line.

Now, the talk show queen wants people to really know her side of the story.

In response to the WGA, DeGeneres' publicist released the following statement to PerezHilton.com:

"Ellen has not done anything in violation of the Writer's Guild of America agreement, or the WGA's internal 'Strike Rules.'

Telepictures Productions, through its distributor Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, has contractual obligations to continue to deliver original programming to the 220 stations that carry the program.

We have asked Ellen to come back to work to fulfill her contractual Obligation, as host of the show, because without original programs the stations can move the show out of its time periods or ultimately hold the company in breach of contract.  The company, in turn, expects Ellen not to breach her contract to host the show.  We also wish to preserve the 135 jobs of the staff and the crew whose livelihoods depend on the show continuing.  We regret the Writer's Guild has chosen to strike and we wish for a quick resolution.

It is unfair and incorrect to compare The Ellen DeGeneres Show to late night shows such as Leno, Letterman and Conan, all of which are late night network owned and controlled programming.  Ellen is a daytime talk show carried on a syndicated basis across individual television stations, no different than, and in direct competition with, Oprah, Rachel Ray, Phil, Live with Regis and Kelly,  Martha, Tyra, Jerry, Maury, and Montel, all of which are in first run daytime syndication and are continuing in production."

I like that, she's the only person that stood up.

Hehe, welcome to Texas, we would have given a nice card for those folks.

Hehe, I jest, we would backslap these ungratefuls and they would be happy to beam a fake smile and offer to eat my coochie.

While I support the WGA strike and agree with their reasons for striking, I cannot hold Ellen accountable at all for her decision to cross picket lines. She DOES have a contract, and she feels responsible for her crew retaining their jobs. I feel like she's between a rock and a hard place.

I have been a huge ellen fan for years, but must say her "stunts" in recent weeks are making me think otherwise….maybe she is not as great as I once thought, using her show to try to get back @ the "dog" lady and now crossing the picket line, I think she needs to get over herself and get her shit together and remember how fast people will turn on her, does she really not remember what happened a few years ago, when you couldnt pay people to come to your show, or buy your book….pull your head out and just do your damn job!! And dont be a scab, come on how low do yo have to go!!!

Ellen's right, it's not the same thing as Letterman et al.
Instead of creating controversy and focussing attention on Ellen, I really wish the WGA would concentrate on reaching a compromise with the networks so we can have our tv shows for a full season. Other people are affected by this strike, not just the writers (I don't mean the viewers. I mean the caterers, wardrobe stylists, makeup etc who are now out of a job).

I have to say I completely agree with the statement given by the network-why aren't other daytime hosts coming under fire? Ellen has always said she stands behind the writers and continuing doing what she is doing is for her fans/audience-she clearly doesnt need the money-the writers do-and they should get it but Ellen doesnt make that decision-all of the actors are affected by this strike-as the fans of all the shows are- I truly dont believe Eve Longoria picketing is going to make this strike end any faster-does this make sense?

      ELLEN IS RIGHT.

This is a contractual obligation, and this IS a different situation.

to single out ellen when theres a lot other people working while there writers are on strike is just wrong , no ones on at the greys anatomy people TR Knight comes to picket duting breaks WTFs that thats no more than what ellens doing
give the women a break and do we actual care anyways if the writers get what they want …. hmm doesnt affect my life how about your ? noo

theres a lot of others doing the, she cant make a difference anyways by picketing , the writers have to stick up for them selves !!

people are acting like the writers strike is going to end hunger or war or something , its just for the RICH writers to get more money

if she has to work she has to work simple as that

multy million pound buisness' do the same when workers strike all the bosses and other co workers have to work , thats just the way it is

      leave her alone !
she does one slight thing lately and its friggin international news i dont get it , britneys still nuts with her kids in the car yet it gets printed and people laugh , that should be a bigger issue if ya ask me

Re: Sherry – No, #43 jason dottley is not correct. Ellen will be selling DVDs of her own show any day now. Then what?

By the way, everybody in TV has a "contract" including Leno, Conan, etc. etc. So that's no excuse. The truth is, Ellen is not a writer so she cannot relate. However, she doesn't show up for work when she gives a stupid dog away. What happened to her contractual obligations then?????

      Pitiful.

Google Jimmy Hoffa. If it weren't for unions you wouldn't even know the words "minimum wage." It's about time the WGA got some guts to take on the studios. Their last strike was in 1988, folks. Give them what they want and take it out of the actors' pockets.

ELLEN IS A MEMBER OF THE WGA

THAT is why she is different than all the other talk show hosts.

SHE IS BREAKING THE RULES OF THE GUILD SHE IS A MEMBER OF!!!!

Ellen is a member of the WGA! why does she think it is okay for her to cross the picket line????

I HAVE A CONTRACT TOO! But the AMPTP is refusing to play fair by rolling back our health and pension benefits and so now i'm not going to work for them!

Ellen needs to stand with the rest of her fellow WGA members OR SHE NEEDS TO GIVE UP HER MEMBERSHIP.

however she won't give it up, do any of you know WHY?
Because all the major companies in this town are what is called "guild signatories" which mean to work with them, you have to be a WGA member. if ellen gives up her membership, after the strike is over… well, she won't be able to work with any studio or network… as a writer. she can still act and produce, but she CAN NOT write. not even ONE JOKE. nothing.
and THAT is why the WGA went after ellen.
she is a hypocrite. she wants all the perks of membership without having to pay her dues!
      typical STAR MENTALITY!

love her all you want. but sorry, Ellen is a member of our guild and she has broken the rules. she is IN THE WRONG. She can quit the guild (and should) and then she can go back to being Miss "do no wrong" but until she hands in her WGA card, the woman is a SCAB.

Many of us have contracts. In fact, I bet creater of Grays Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes is making millions just like Ellen… but Shonda stood with her guild and walked off her show. Why hasn't Ellen?

But Ellen doesn't have to? Why is that?
I have a contract. Ellen has a contract.
That IS NOT what this is about.
It is about Ellen thumbing her nose at the other members in her guild.

I CAN NOT look for a new job. WHY? Because I am not a scab.
I am a writer on strike. which means I don't write FOR FILM AND TELEVISION.
I am, however, working on a novel. Yes, I was one of the lucky ones who saw this coming and got a book deal. NO, I will not sell the tv or film rights until this strike is settled. PENCILS DOWN means not tv or film writing.
I am taking a much deserved and needed day off. I picketed all week. I am taking a huge financial hit. I had a tv show AND a feature this year. But I am willing to stand up for what is right. I'm not just striking for myself, I'm strking for all future screenwriters so they will be able to recieve fair participation in new media. As it stands, broadcast TV is going to move to the web. It already has. You can download and stream FULL episodes of television. WITH COMMERCIALS. The big companies are getting paid, why are we, the creators. We aren't asking for much.

Writing is like long distance running. It's lonely and takes a helluva lot of endurance. Keep at it and the rest of the people trying will drop out… and you will eventually win the race and become a paid writer.

Actually, as a Guild member, she does not have the right render writing services. Now of course, she can quit the Guild and go her merry way, but ask yourself why she hasn't…because the guild pays her healthcare and pension and protects her earnings. sorry babe, she's gotta pick, it's one way or the other and Ellen shouldn't pussy out.

I wonder if Ellen was STRAIGHT would Perez support her so much and love her so much.
He's all about Ellen because she is GAY. The woman could strangle puppies and kittens with her bare hands and Perez would applaud and draw hearts all over her.

Apparently Ellen Degeneres some of her supporters have no problem with Ellen having made an estimated $16,000,000,000 from June 2006-June2007. Her total networth is estimated by Forbes to be about $65,000,000. Yet, according to writers, the average writer does not make $200,000 per year. Go figure…rolling my eyes.
