Playing Dirty

Tisk tisk.

NBC is trying to strong arm Jay Leno back to the Tonight Show, the very same program they are basically forcing him to leave against his own will in a year and a half.

The funnyman with the heart of gold has been supporting his writers by walking out in solidarity and not crossing the picket line.

But, now, NBC has informed all nonwriting staff that they will be fired at the end of next week if Leno doesn't return.

Ewwww. That's all sorts of wrong!

“I talk to Jay every day, and he will not be the first [late-night host] to cross the picket line,” said Tonight Show head writer Joe Medeiros, also a strike captain for the Writers Guild of America.

So, in an attempt to save people's jobs and also lure Leno back, NBC is "looking into" the possibility of having guest hosts fill in while Jay is gone.

How shady of NBC!

What a bunch of jerks at NBC. Regardless of what you think of the strike, it's not the nonwriting staff's fault what's going on.

I remember when Jack Parr was the host, before Jonny and Jay. I think it's terrible that they are giving Jay Leno such a hard time. He saved that show when they passed on Joan Rivers to replace Jonny. I agree with the other posts on this web, Kudos to Perez for bringing this to our attention.

      Re: napoleon diddy
I want new episodes of The Office too, but if you can appreciate The Office, don't you understand that what makes that show is the unique team of writers (half of which are actors in the show.. Steve Carrell included.. he has written an episode or two). You can't have The Office without those writers, plain and simple. They deserve all the royalties from DVD sales and internet views. Have you seen how many fucking adds they put in the online episodes? And they are keeping all that for themselves and not giving them to the writers?? Fucking ridiculous!!
Those of you who don't care about the strike either don't care much for TV or don't understand how this industry works, and that's fine. But you have to realize that there are a ton of people out there who DO know and care, and that's why this strike is vital to the future of Televison.

Why not just give writers a percentage of internet downloads?? If there's really no money to be made there, like the higher-ups are claiming, then 2% of nothing is nothing.

Why fire the "non-writing staff?" Are they refering to cameramen, gaffs, gophers that sort of thing? That's extortion, if that's the case. If that were me and I got sued because of the writers staff striking, I would sue the shit out of NBC. If they are doing this because these people don't have anything to do at the moment (no show = no work), then they should put them on temporary leave–not fire them. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what is being said though because of the way it is worded: Is he telling the non-writing staff that the writers will be fired if Leno doesn't return? Either way it's extortion, and shouldn't be condoned. That is a very difficult choice for Jay to make, but I just quite a job over bullshit like this, but I didn't make the kind of money Jay makes. It doesn't matter though, if I were Jay, I would still say eff you to NBC because I don't like their unscrupulous tactics!

THEY CAN'T FIRE ALL THOSE PEOPLE BASED ON HIS DECISION- THEY COULD FIRE LENO, BUT NOT THEM. IF THEY DO FIRE ALL THOSE PEOPLE ON STRIKE THEY WILL BE LOOKING AT A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT. ALTHOUGH, WHO KNOWS EVERYONE MIGHT GET FIRED AND NEW WRITERS WILL TAKE OVER. THIS TYPE IOF STRIKE DEFINITELY REQUIRES SUPPORT FROM HIGH-PROFILE PEOPLE.

      69

thanks for pointing that out, erin, i was about to do so. yes, ideally nbc would be able to keep everyone on. however, without a show to draw in the necessary revenue, studios are not going to be able to pay the rest of the staff that was hired FOR THAT SHOW. what if the show had been cancelled? would the non-writing staff hired for that show be kept on? doubtful.

it sucks for anyone to be out of a job, but another way to look at it is this: i live in san diego. I assume all of you have heard about or experienced the fires. i work in a lowest-of-the-low position at a corporate store. i missed a scheduled shift because the store closed due to the fires. i was paid for that shift. however, the store was closed for only 2 days and i make only 50 cents above CA min wage. if the store had been closed for weeks due to damage (or, had entirely burned down), i would expect that i'd be out of a job, or at least would not be paid for the time the store was closed (beyond a certain length of time. indeed, i was pleasantly surprised to find i had been paid for that lost shift!).

    70. just thinking (part 2) says – reply to this

      70

in neither case - strikes or fires - is it the employee's fault. however, no company can provide compensation or job security indefinitely in the face of cessation of said company's business. there's a reason that, even at the executive level, companies have a limit to paid vacation time.

companies, while they may seem made of money, also have a responsibility to their shareholders (legally). if execs don't act in the best interests (or whatever the applicable legal standard may be) of the business, they risk being sued by shareholders/investors. you can't blame execs for cutting employees that aren't working on something profitable. they could be sued (depending on the structure of the company, which i won't get into here) or fired!

    71. just thinking - and boring you (part 3) says – reply to this

      71

there are so many laws in place to protect so many people. if you were an exec of a company, you would want the same security protestors want. you would need to make everyone happy or risk your job. there's no union for executives. chances are, if the company fails, they lose their jobs, the bottom line falls and they lose their investments in the company (which is likely a huge part of their net worth).

bottom line: everyone in every position is fighting for him/herself, understandably. no matter how much sympathy one may have for the "other side," one's first instinct is to protect one's own ass. so people are blaming the execs/studios and NOT the writers . . . sure, maybe the writers DO deserve more, but the writers are acting JUST LIKE THE STUDIOS. they are trying to protect their asses. should not the writers also be concerned about the non-writing staff?

    72. Shireen says – reply to this

Re: big G – I agree that a majority of TV is garbage.. nowhere did I mention "How I Met Your Mother" being a good show. Shows like The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock, are fucking brilliant and hilarious and anyone who doesn't acknowledge that is most likely an idiot. Also, shows like Late Night with Conan are also worth saving. So, yeah.. I'd say it's more 70/30, and those writers definitely deserve royalties.

    73. ams says – reply to this

      73

This is an utter disgrace. NBC should shut the hell up and give the writers some well-earned residuals for their work.

It is an episode on the internet with advertisements.
      It is not a "promotion".

    74. The Truth says – reply to this

      74

The truth is, Leno was always planning on coming back within 2 weeks, just like Johnny Carson did 20 years ago during the last writers strike. And he did so to save the jobs of the other 99% of his staff. Writers are great and all but there are usually about 5-10 vs. the other 200 members of the crew. Don't the 200 members of the crew deserve to keep their jobs or are we all supposed to go hungry so that the writers get an extra $.04 per download?

    75. The Truth says – reply to this

      75

You people obviously don't live or work in Hollywood. This is the hollywood publicity machine at work laying the ground work so that when Leno goes back in two weeks, like he's been planning to do this whole time, it will seem like he was "forced" and everyone will think "poor leno".

wake up people, this is all a load of bullshit.

Many people stood to lose their jobs because of (IMO) an over-rated ensemble cast's greed. These six people, who made tons of money btw, didn't care about the small players–so why should the writers? Yes, if you are a caring human being, you should care–to some extent. But when you have financial responsibilities, families, etc., you have to consider those things also; it isn't all cut and dry.

Re: Carla – For example: I quit my job last Friday without having another one lined up because my ex-employers were attempting to use manipulative tactics and/or blackmail to try and control me. I have children to support, financial responsibilities, etc., but I quit not only because I was miserable, but because I felt that the way they treat their employees is unfair, demeaning, and in a sense I wanted to take a stand on behalf of my fellow co-workers. On one hand, I felt bad about quitting because I knew that my already overworked, underpaid, and under-appreciated co-workers were going to be expected to work harder to do the extra work my leaving caused. On the other hand I hoped (probably unrealistically) that my quitting would force the powers that be to have that long awaited (and much needed) epiphany. And that they would realize that if they didn't get their shit together and show some appreciation for their over-worked, underpaid, and faithful employees (instead of treating them like children) they would lose even more.

[re=878564]Re: just thinking Yes, there are always more people to take my place and theirs, but training takes time and money; so in essenYes, there se this act that some might consider to be childish on my part, could possibly be detrimental to their ability to function as an enterprise. Also, in my case, the co-workers I left behind supported me 100%, and I can only hope that someday they realise that they do not have to tolerate that sort of behavior from anyone, and I can only surmise that this may be how the non-writing staff at NBC feels also…that they support the writers even though it may jeopardise their own jobs. Hopefully, if they were in that position, the writers would support them too.

So, in an attempt to save people’s jobs and also lure Leno back, NBC is “looking into” the possibility of having guest hosts fill in while Jay is gone.

U said it. How is that shady of NBC? it's shady for $200,000 a year salaried writers to go on strike before the producers and directors planned later in the year. which gave most the staff NBC is both letting go of and not letting go of according to your "blog" no chance to find other employment or plan for the financial hardship ahead. The writers and u dont give a shit about the working calss people or they would give up the 8cents per DVD for someones job or do it the right way as planned.
Is Perez not one of the foremost "Bloggers" trying to become unionized. like REAL writers. It just seems a little bias. No a lot bias.

Pretty much. The late night talk shows are just viewing this as another hiatus. look what happened 20 years ago. I believe it was 2 weeks that Carson stayed down. And as soon as he went back, Letterman followed.

No one wants to be the first to go back because they want to appear supportive, but the truth is, they are all planning to resume production, and rightfully so. A large number of people that work on Leno have worked on that show for up to 30 years, most were there since Carson. Do they deserve to lose their jobs? No, I really don't think so.

Good. Leno represents the lamest brain dead shtick in late night history. It would be a blessing in disguise for him to disappear along with the retards that write his garbage.

That's exactly why not all of us are all gushing with joy that the WGA wouldn't stick it out at the table longer and jumped on the strike train.

What is NBC supposed to do? Shell out money on a show that isn't happening? They do have an obligation to remain as profitable as possible to their shareholders. (many of you who have 401K plans are probably invested in them)
All the agencies have started laying off people and cutting salaries. The rich fighting with the super rich has done nothing but screw the support staff who all make less than $25K per year. Thanks guys.

Re: Carla – hi carla, that's what i was trying to say, though perhaps not so clearly. what i meant was that everyone can be blamed in this situation; however, everyone also has a reason, i.e. protecting his or her own livelihood, whether they be the actors, execs, writers, non-writers, etc. hopefully all parties can understand one another's needs and work out a solution (though admittedly, this is likely a naive hope).

Classic H'wood fag basher, Jay Leno = no friend of mine. The show sucks, he's lame, and the "writing" is AWFUL anyway. Hope they're all fat and happy out there.

I say fire all of them! You silly cunts, do you not realise how unions are actually the greedy ones in this country ? Unions are what have made your country a shit hole on the globe. This dispute is not about people wanting their so-called 'fair share.' It's merely about greed. Fire all those twats who want to stand in solidarity. Television needs a good cleansing anyway. Do what you people do best, import your bloody culture from another part of the world. Fill the airwaves with programmes from England. Let's face it, your shows are pretty rank.

    94. Paul says – reply to this

      94

Considering the obscene amount of money paid to Jay Leno, maybe he could show his REAL solidarity with the union by paying the laid off Tonight Show staff members during the strike. It will never happen. The "stars" are big with the talk but slow to open their wallets.

Good for NBC. Unions play so dirty, especially attacking by bff Ellen, I am glad to see the company stand up to them. The unions are ultimately responsible for the rest of the crew losing their jobs. It is a shame the outdated union organizations control so much.

Ellen Degenourous is a writer…duh she is a comedian. So is Jay Leno. These writers have a right to strike, but they cannot force other people that do not correspond with them to follow. The fact is this, there are hungry young talents comming up in hollywood. Hollywood hasn't produced an original Idea, they are all washed up remakes and books. That's why these people are panicking. Hey that's great that they want royalties, but do actors and actress get royalties for the DVD's as well? What about the extras? The Art work people? The editors? Yes, the writers came up with the story but without everyone else its just words on a damn paper. So if they get a raise everyone esle should also. If the get royalties so should the others. The ultimatum is this everyone gets it or no one does, and they fire eveyone who is in breach of contract. Under my understanding the minute you write something and sell your rights, thats it, you get no royalties. READ the FINE PRINT next time simple as that.
