The Writers Attack Ellen
The Writers Guild of America released a statement on Friday, criticizing Ellen DeGeneres for crossing the picket line.
They say:
Ellen DeGeneres went back on the air this week after honoring only one day of the writers strike. In anticipation of her plans to tape shows in New York City on November 19th and 20th, the Writers Guild of America, East is extremely disappointed to see that Ellen has chosen not to stand with writers during the strike. Ellen’s peers who host comedy/variety shows have chosen to support the writers and help them get a fair contract, Ellen has not. On her first show back, Ellen said she loves and supports her writers, but her actions prove otherwise.
Ellen has also been performing comedy on her show. Even if Ellen is writing those segments herself, since those segments would normally be written by the writers on strike, she’s performing “struck work”. Ellen is violating the strike rules that were clearly explained to all of the comedy/variety shows.
We certainly intend to let Ellen know our dissatisfaction in person if she decides to proceed with the shows she has scheduled in New York on November 19th and 20th. We will also make our voices heard the preceding week if she tries to pre-tape comedy segments on location.
We find it sad that Ellen spent an entire week crying and fighting for a dog that she gave away, yet she couldn't even stand by writers for more than one day - writers who have helped make her extremely successful.
Every show and film set has a production staff and crew that is beloved by their writers. Ellen's staff is no more important than the rest of the industry. When shows refuse to stand with us they create huge revenue streams for the companies and that prolongs the strike for the thousands of staff and crew members who are noble enough to honor our picket lines. We find this situation hurtful to those people and extremely unfortunate.
The writers did not cause this strike. The companies’ greed caused this strike and it could end tomorrow if they were finally willing to negotiate a fair deal. We ask Ellen to cease doing shows immediately. She should stand by all writers and help us bring this strike to a quick conclusion. We owe that to the thousands of people who are caught in the middle."

I believe the writers do deserve a fair deal. However, Ellen has her own show and crew to think about too. Perhaps she doesn't want those crew to be out of work while the writers strike. If Ellen writes her own material then isn't she entitled to perform it? I am confused why they would strike out at Ellen. She told her audience that she knew they paid to come out to see the show and she thought they were entitled to a show. It isn't like a tv drama where writers write every word. No one is bitching at The View and they are still on.

The show is all about the fans! Ellen has lots of fans everyday from out of state that have had their trip booked weeks or even months in advance. I totally understand and agree with her continuing to be on air. If I were to have my trip booked just to go to LA for her show, and get there to find that her show was cancelled, I would be completely devastated. Her show is for her fans and not for her writers. The show has to still go on writers or not.

But Ellen could be the lone writer for her show, and I have every inclination that it would still be just as successful. I would first like to say that Jesse and Blakers are cum gugling cock monkeys (you cut/paste bastards). That being said its not up to the TV shows to fight this fight for the writers. Its great that some shows choose to stand by them but I don;t remember the actors and TV hosts voting to strike. The writers did that. The expression "you made your bed now lie in it" comes to mind. Does anyone not realize that "Regis and Kelly" "Oprah" and "The View" are still on the air. Everyone always needs someone to pick on. Guess they picked her. I do agree that the writers need to be payed for the material they produce, however this strike is affecting so many people caught in between. People who only make anywhere between 5 and 8 hundred a week, busting there ass. If anyone should go on strike it should be all the assistants that are usually the industries door mats. The bottom line is if she or anyone else is NOT in that union, there should be no expectation for them to strike with that union. There should also not be any backlash for her actions. If the hosts of any show stops coming to work for a few days because of money, I don't believe for a minute that these union workers will walk out. If the network sticks a substitute host in there, the writers and other union workers will still perform their duties. Then people will say " but those workers can't afford to strike like the big stars can. It has to go both ways people.
