Broadway On Strike Too!!!

There's something in the air!!!

The stagehands have gone on strike in New York. At around 10 A.M. on Saturday, they starting walking the picket lines outside the major theaters in Times Square.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has been unable to come to terms with the League of American Theaters and Producers, resulting in the temporary closing of almost all shows on Broadway.

Ticketbuyers are being offered refunds for cancelled shows.

The timing of the strike could not have come at a worse time for everyone involved, as Broadway is about to enter its very busy holiday season.

Click here to read The New York Times' take on the specifics of the strike. Why are they doing it? What impact will it have on the city? And when will it end?

This is bullshit and greed on BOTH parties side. I know 2 people who work for Local One and they do GREAT. Consider that a decent show, dinner for two and parking in NY will run you about $400 then how can you feel sorry for anyone involved in this dispute? This is one more example of why unions are obsolete and most theatre owners are greedy.

      26

It's stupidity to think writers shouldn't get a raise. I'm all for it and hope things work out on their end. They're not being greedy (or as some of u dumb ppl say, 'lazy') they just want what they deserve.
Writers are the creation behind what makes good entertainment!
      Go writers!!!!!!!

    27. LadyChaos1138 says – reply to this

      27

Um, the writers want to go from 4 cents per dvd which they get now to 8 cents in residuals. IT's a 4 cent raise. It's also about the fact that sales are moving now from theatres and home video to digital. They want a cut of that as well. This is the time for it as this market takes off.

And the Broadway union is for the bottom rung. In fact the reason tickets are so expensive for Broadway has nothing to do with the Union. It has to do with the price of rent in New York and the amount they pay for big stars to perform.

If you don't want to support the typical working man that's fine just don't argue against unions if you don't know the facts.

    28. Amy says – reply to this

      28

'This is why Broadway shows are becoming an activity of the wealthy because ticket prices are so unaffordable because of unions. Unions = we all pay more!'

That is complete bullshit. I'm an actor, proud member of the AEA, and on top of that, I'm a regular theatre enthusiast. I see about 4 shows a month, and I have never paid more than $50 for a ticket. Have you ever heard about RUSHING? Tickets can be bought for about $26 on the day of a performance, and then you have discount programs like TKTS where you can get an orchestra seat for $60. Come on, that is less than what most poor hipsters will pay for drinks on a Friday night. Everyone wants to blaim the unions for everything, but the unions are what keeps things on and off broadway from going to hell on a nightly basis, and when it comes down to it, it has very little to do with the actual breakdown of the cost of a ticket.

Actors Equity keeps work coming, it keeps me in health insurance, it keeps the minimum wage for a stage actor at an amount that will keep me alive living in Nyc…. So I have to say, THANK GOD FOR UNIONS!

Not ALL broadway shows are halted. Young Frakenstein, along with about 6 or 7 other shows, are still running.

And anyway, most likely the strike will be over in a week. Thanksgiving/Christmas is when broadway really rakes in the $$$, so they'll be coming to an agreement before then.

How dare any of you call these stagehands lazy! these are the people running the show, behind the scenes and what you dont see. when you see flying objects, beautiful scenery, and construction that seems so impossible to make .. it is the men and women who put in 7am-12am shifts to make this possible. for you, the viewers. un-harnessed men are sitting 100 feet above stage, using pully systems, lighting, and other dangerous jobs for the satisfaction of a "great show". its not the great actors that make the show what it is. it is the men and women who love their job and their show so much that they are willing to put in 10 hours to put up a set, watch and be part of the show for 2 hours as the show goes on, and spend another 10 taking it down. the stagehands ARE the show, without them you have a bunch of actors on a blank stage taking your money. the real crime is the production companies taking away from the stagehands. cutting their manpower to put more into their penthouses. violating codes to save a buck for themselves. theyd rather 5 men to lift a ton object up a set of stairs rather than the 15 it requires. dont speak poorly about these committed men adn women until you understand what they are fighting for. they dont want more money for an undeserved job. they want what is owed to them, something they havent received in 100 years.

Hey Rose's Mom and UGH….Please enlighten us, If you or any other posters are so passionate about the "greed" of these "PRICKS," then I encourage you to educate us with some facts about theatrical unions and the damage they've done. Seriously, I'm open to a personal discussion. I have studied the business of Broadway, and the finances involved. My current career is in music and concert promotion, which is why I'm curious if you can offer a just argument for your feelings. My brother receives heath care through equity funding. He pays his dues and complains about it. However, he has worked hard to even qualify and has been granted opportunities for his struggles. I would LOVE to understand why you feel the way you do. I sympathize with Kelsey, that sucks. She's got a better argument than any of you and she's proven her class and dignity to not throw low, empty, ignorant, and judgmental blows.

Words cannot express the disappointment on my kids face when we arrived in NYC on Sat 11/10 to a find out there was NO SHOW. Not to mention, I had taken an UNPAID day off from work, paid $25.00 for parking and a $6.00 toll just to get to that bullshit! So I sympathize, I really do, but for some of us average folk, Broadway is a treat NOT often afforded. This strike is hurting the pockets of Broadway goers as well!

    47. wetcnt says – reply to this

      47

OK, first off people - this story is about STAGE HANDS ON BROADWAY. Not the writer's strike. Get your strikes straight!

Secondly, the stagehands want force the theaters to continue the practice of hiring people that get paid for doing no work. They want a minimum number of stagehands per show - even if the show doesn't need them. Greed, greed, greed.

A good example is Spring Awakening. Other than setting up the stage before the thing starts, there is no need for stagehands during the show. The cast moves all the sets themselves.

That guy right there…first in line..thats my brother in law. He and his fellow union members bust their asses, often on 12-18 days. It is not just the Actors/Producers/Musicians making magic on stage…the stagehands bring it all together behind the scenes. The next time you see a B-Way show (hopefully sooner than later) take a moment to think about the whois hanging 4 stories up in the rafters. The lighting, sets, moving cues that must be done flawlessly in order to make that magic..for your entertainment..It aint easy and id like to see you do it. LAZY?!?!?!
      HA!!!

That said I hope this is resolved soon, for everyone involved.

This is one time when I am not in favor of the unions. It's easy to think that the producers are just being greedy, but these stagehands already make an average of 6 figures! They have the sweetest deal in town. Business in midtown Manhattan will suffer dramatically if this goes on long…restaurants, hotels.

This union is being completely lazy and greedy over this. 8 hour minimum calls (that's right, you need one for 5 minutes, you gotta pay for 8 hours) riduculously high hourly wages (go ahead.. I dare even one of you to let the public know what you make…) time and a half, double time, triple time in a heartbeat, health care, pension plans, and these fools still want more. They're striking because producers are simply trying to find a way to avoid paying people to sit around on their asses and DO NOTHING. The fact that Local 1 has a 4.1 million (yes, million) dollar 'war chest' set aside for just such an occasion should tell the public all they need to know. Keep up the greed boys… there's millions of non-union techs out there that are more than happy to do twice the work you do at half the price. Just look at your 'brothers' in the steel and auto industries to see what the future holds for you. You're overpaid dinosaurs.. get over yourselves and get back to work.

By the way, they guy holding the sign on the picket line is my Big Brother and I am so proud to see him on Perez! He was also on the cover of the Sunday New York Times! 59. screwed says – reply to this

      59

The unions began with great intentions. Over the years, greed and corruption have taken over. Local One a few weeks ago released a statement that they would not leave ticket holders in a lurch - they would give notice before striking. Then they went on strike, with no notice and without notifying their employers. They knowingly left thousands of people stranded with tickets. Had they cared they would have given notice that they would strike on Tuesday. That would have allowed people to cancel travle plans, reservations, etc within the time limits of cancellation fees. The union has lost sight of who actually pays them - those of us who buy the tickets.

Maybe the theater owners should hire people who actually want to come to work and be paid for work they actually perform instead of looking for a hand out. If the other unions refuse to cross the lines they should replace them too. There are plenty of talented signers, actors and musicians who qould happily take their jobs. It is time to break the unions!

    60. yader says – reply to this

      60

Re: screwed – unfortunately the only responsibility the union has is to put on a show. meaning set one up. promotion, cancellations, and the actual show is the responsibility of the producers. if they knew a strike was coming by the numerous times the union warned them, they could have informed people. or made more strict rules on how shows are "SCHEDULED TO CHANGE" just like everything else in this world
