Ellen Cancels Trip To New York

Still stung by the controversy regarding her decision to cross the writers strike picket line, Ellen DeGeneres, has scraped plans to film from Manhattan.

The talk show host was set to shoot in New York City next week, but following this stinging public letter from the Writers Guild East, DeGeneres has cancelled her plans.

The Writers Guild letter warned, "We certainly intend to let Ellen know our dissatisfaction in person if she decides to proceed with the shows she has scheduled in New York on November 19th and 20th. We will also make our voices heard the preceding week if she tries to pre-tape comedy segments on location."

A very touchy situation all-around.

Hopefully this strike won't drag on too much longer.

      I work in the industry and I can really see this from both sides. It's such a shame. She's a good, good woman and I understand her want to protect her employees and her contract issues. On the other hand, I am disappointed because I am a writer and she should stand with us. However, I really don't see how she could win. Like so many people, she is dead if she does and dead if she doesn't. But I do wish she had supported the strike.

      I am so fucking sick of the people involved with the writer's strike trying to guilt people into losing their jobs, too. It's fine, writers, if you want to strike - go get 'em! But seriously, why is it so fucking bad that others in the industry want to keep their jobs? It might be nice if they supported you by not "crossing the picket line," but if they don't, then they don't. It's each individual's call.       Im tired of this strike. All of these celebrities coming out for FREE to show support, and yet when one(celebrity) is asked to give a motivational speech $30,000 dollars up front! I would be in favor of the strike if the same passion being put into this were put into other issues's within the country. My mother is a teacher, with crappy pay and has to pay for most of her material's for her class(students) if anybody should be on strike it should be them! The teachers teaching our kids, who live pay check to pay check. So if Ellen doesn't strike with the rest of the WGA then that makes her an individual. Atleast she's honest about it and gave reasons!       Why is everyone giving Ellen such a hard time? None of the other daytime shows went dark. She has a contract and is doing her job! She's not putting hundreds of below the line employees out of work like the writers have done. I initially supported their symbolic effort to gain fair compensation, but by fighting for something they've never had they are robbing the lower wage employees of something they depend on. I hope all these writers who can afford to not work for months plan on buying the holiday gifts for their shows' camera men and makeup artists and grips, because thanks to them they are all now unemployed. Striking is supposed to hurt the company where it hurts, not the people who have even less than what you're demanding. It's nice to see all the stars supporting them too, since their contract is up next. Maybe when they all get what they want they can do their own hair, paint their own sets, and run their own shows, because the people who did before are going to have to find jobs that will pay them in the meantime. This is getting petty and greedy and I am sick from it at this point.

      By continuing her show Ellen is keeping a lot of her staff from being fired. The people behind the scenes are not only being paid less than the writers to begin with, but they are not able to to take care of their families if the show is not on the air. I am sure that Ellen supports her writers, but this the best way to also take care of everyone else on the show. Its not all cut and dry, these writers do deserve higher royalties and I hope they get them. However, this affects other people and that must be kept in mind.
