Big props to David Letterman!
The talk show legend announced to his staff yesterday that he is going to pay all of their salaries through the end of the year while the writers' strike is still going on.
Dave took this bold and costly move because many networks have threatened to fire all the staffs of the talk shows, many of whom have been working for years and years on the show.
Time to at least start talking again, people!

wow, that's really impressive. i think someone finally realizes the major impact this strike is having/going to have on the industry. someone is finally taking into consideration the needs of the staff. i thought it was pretty fucked up how the networks were just going to start firing people just to make a point. you know they have enough money to pay their salaries.

if reports are true that half of writers are unemployed, then at least 50% of them are unskilled workers. i couldn't vouch that the other 50% are skilled in any way.

I always felt that Dave is the funniest of the late-night show hosts. He is a class act. I'm not surprised to hear he would offer to pay his staff through the end of the year, he's a generous man. Do you know every Christmas (I think it may be Christmas Eve) for the past few years, Dave had gone to the Mid-east to entertain the troops and you don't hear too much about it because he doesn't want any press over it. Class act!
Dave is the best and the rest suck. Also, why are there a few idiots who write "first bitches" and other similar stupid things and they end up being like 21st. Geez, get these kids off the net!

I love my Dave Letterman. What a great guy.
It's really annoying that the press, including you Perez, are referring to these workers as "fired" They aren't fired, they are laid off. Just like every other industry in the world, if there is no work, there is no pay. When scripted shows go on hiatus all the workers don't get paid…just the writers collecting residuals from repeats.
So basically, while the writers are striking, the other 100-250 people on each of these shows isn't getting a paycheck. However, the writer's are still collecting paychecks from residuals while the camera operators, sound mixers, set decorators, PAs, editors, assistant editors, craft service, actors, production managers, accountants, writer's assistants, executive assistants, and all the other people it takes to bring their precious written words to life are applying for unemployment and hoping to not lose their homes.
So good for Letterman, unlike Jon Stewart, for remembering that it's not just his writers who are not getting paychecks.
Dave is the greatest guy around. He is level headed and realizes that it aint no big thang to be famous. He treats people with respect that deserve respect and to those that don't (Paris Hilton) they become his target, and no one does it better.

I commend his loyalty to the staff that have obviously been so loyal to him. It is so sad for everyone except for the network execs, and it makes me sick. Writers aren't getting paid and are striking for fair wages, and now innocent non-union show-runners and staff are getting fired simply as a ploy by the network to force the WGA to bend over because of the unnecessary layoffs. How bittersweet that Letterman decides to pay his staff for the rest of the year, but the network (whose pockets are quite a bit deeper) refuses to do the same.
Ok, does this apply to "World Wide Pants" productions which he has 50% ownership? I think they only own "The Late Late Show" for now. This would make the financial loss relative compared to other compainies. Of course, on the other hand not many that actually have power have stepped up financially in this industry, so props to David.
