Martha Stewart's beloved mother, Martha Kostyra, a frequent guest on her shows, has passed away.

"Big Martha" suffered a stroke this past week and sadly ended up passing away on Friday.

She was 93.

Stewart wrote the following on her blog Saturday:

"I am very sad to tell you that my mom passed away. Please feel free to reflect on her amazing life by leaving a comment here."

Love or hate Martha Stewart…nobody ever wants to lose a parent. Martha's mom was always lovely, kind and happy. She was adorable. Rest in Peace, my condolences to Martha and the family.

How sad, my heart goes out to little Martha and her siblings. Big Martha was entertaining and say what you will about lil Martha but she did alot for her mom and made sure she spent the rest of her days comfortably. We should all be so lucky to have a good run as long as Big Martha, I really thought she was gonna make it to 100. RIP

Like said earlier, she was on the Today Show on Thursday and when Matt Lauer told her that she probably had lots to be thankful for. Then Martha told Matt and the audience that her mother was ailing and probably wouldn't make it to Thanksgiving. Then, what I thought looked and sounded so wierd…. she smiles, waves at the camera and says "good luck mom!"

I agree with you, e is an idiot. But why is it self-absorbed to have a family naming tradition? I think it gives children a sense of family pride, unless the name is something awful and embarassing. My brother loves being John, IV, and I love having the same name as my mother and grandmother. It isn't about being self-absorbed; it's about tradition and feeling like part of something bigger than yourself. Why are tradition and traditional familes so reviled these days? Is it less self-absorbed to name your kid something "creative and unique" just to show the world how creative and unique you are? I think that's being self-absorbed. And when no one can figure out how to spell or say the kid's name, they'll wish they were John Doe, III.

Much sympathy to Martha Stewart, and her family for the loss of their mother and grandmother. No matter what the age, losing a parent is devastating. I notice that on these posts, Martha Kostyra was referred to as "Big Martha".
Would that make Martha Stewart "Little Martha?" Sometimes, Martha Stewart was referred to as "Young Martha". Would that make her mother "Old Martha?
In this case, why can't women be like men, that is, why can't the 2 women just
be referred to as Martha Sr. and Martha Jr.? That would make a lot of sense.

It is a very sad day. I am a huge fan of Martha's and always enjoy watching her show especially when her mother would be a guest. She was a lovely woman who will be missed. Poor Martha- she was extremely close to her mother - her mother meant the world to her. RIP.
