Jermaine Dupri's Message To Music Fans

a77493862.jpg

"Fuck you," Jermaine Dupri says.

The music producer wrote this impassioned and misguided essay about the state of the music biz.

Not only does it show his lack of appreciation for the people that buy his music, but he also paints iTunes to be a big evil monster.

Dupri thinks that albums should be sold as a whole and consumers shouldn't have the option on iTunes to buy songs individually.

If you just want a hot single, you should have to buy the whole album, Jermaine argues.

Uhmmmm. Yeah, did he forget that people will just download the song illegally??

The man is clearly living in 1977, not 2007. Look at how successful Radiohead was at getting an average of $6 per copy of their new album sold. If the music is good, the money will come in. If it's rubbish, it will end up in the bin. At least with digital sales there's less to recycle at the end of the day.

    32

HE ALSO SAID THIS AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH HIM… BUT EITHER WAY PEOPLE ARE STILL GOING TO CONTINUE BURNING CD'S THE WHOLE CD!

"I'm not saying that music can't ever be sold as singles. Not every album is equal and consumers are always going to try to cherry pick the songs they like. But that doesn't mean the people who investing their time, money and sweat into a record shouldn't have the right to decide how it's gonna be sold, whether that's in single units or as a whole. My book, Young, Rich and Dangerous: The Making of a Music Mogul, came out in hardcover last month, but Simon & Schuster doesn't let the book stores tear it up and sell it chapter by chapter. A record is no different."

I, for one, miss albums. There was an art in the editing–the construction–that one misses with just downloads. Going back to wax, it was always cool to have two concepts to listen to (the A & B sides), but even CDs are better than single-song downloads.

  53. NYC says – reply to this

    53

I completely agree with him. Being in the music industry myself I see all of the hard work, effort, thought and passion that goes into great artists making great albums. I have no problem with mediocre artists selling their songs piece by piece, but great artists whose albums have meaning and tell a story from beginning to end like Jay-Z's American Gangster should be sold as a whole or not sold at all. iTunes can continue to sell their songs the way they feel is more lucrative for them and more satisfying to the consumer but I'm happy artists have the right to say "No, you will not destroy my art".

  56. Keri says – reply to this

    56

He has a valid point but, that means artists have to step up to the plate and make albums that people actually want to buy. He complains that Soulja Boy only sold 300,000 albums and yet forgets that REAL artists, like Alicia Keys is projected to move more than that her first week. And I without listening to either albums I bet Alicia Keys puts out a much better product than Soulja Boy.

One point he is totally wrong about is the involvement of BET and MTV. Without them the video industry would be dead. Who else would show videos by new artists. Not everyone is huge and can put out a DVD.

Why is he so concerned with making established acts richer? Sometime iTunes is the only way a fantastic emerging artist can compete against Record company favorites.

    62

Black people buy mainly singles anyways if they're not stealing the whole albumin the first place. What? What?

  63. larray says – reply to this

    63

God - Jermaine Dupri and Jay Black are idiots! Obviously, their own lackluster to audiences and quality are the reason people aren't buying music now a days. Great! I am glad that Jay Z is so rich that he doesn't need to sell singles, but who was Souljah Boy before that stupid single that I can't understand what he says was played on the radio? JACK and thats who! Maybe he was famous in Atlanta or Louisiana, but so was Britney Spears.

Frankly, Jay Z has more money than god, bangs BeYonce and owns the Nets. Now he's being a big baby, complaining about iTunes slicing up his (and every other artists) album. Sounds like he thinks he's god's gift to the music industry. However, in reality, seems like Dupri, Black and Puffy Coat are just a bunch of rich thugs who only see dollar signs.

Be realistic stupid - like Jay Z isn't going to eat? These dudes don't know what going hungry means. The only starving artists they hear about come directly from the village voice. These guys are soo far from the roots of hip hop and so narcissistic they are destined to destroy themselves.

You niggas wouldn't know hip hop or about it's roots if it came out of your mom's uterus. Better buy Kanye's new album, graduation…STOOPIDS!

  64. holla! says – reply to this

    64

Guess what Jupri? Im not paying $16 for one good song and 14 piece of shit "filler" tracks. THOSE DAYS ARE OVER. The public got tired of shit being put out and artists getting rich off of lame music.

You want us to buy an enitre album? Make 15 hot tracks. Done.

If there is one hot track and I can only buy the album. I just won't fucking buy it. Asshat.

  65. elyse says – reply to this

    65

it was appropriate to expect people to buy entire albums based on a single when it was standard practice to put out an entire album… these days, most artists only concentrate on one or two hit singles and fill the rest of the album with crap. that isn't our fault.

also, i thought we didn't live in a communist society? can't people spend their money any way they want?

  66. toriphile says – reply to this

    66

I didn't read the entire blog he wrote all the way through, but he does kind of have a point when he says an artist wants you to hear the whole album all the way through. Perez, as a fan of Tori Amos, you should appreciate this because all of her album's are conceptual and all the songs are related.

  67. elyse says – reply to this

  69. DupriBallz says – reply to this

    69

Jermaine is what's wrong with the music industry now, he's a dinosaur stuck in the past who can't deal with the idea that people want singles, want lots of music and want it for FREE (or at least cheaply — before it was shut down, allofmp3.com had the pricing right).

He's rich, he made his money back when it was possible to do so, now he needs to adapt to the realities of music sharing or get out of the way.

And go to hell if you think people need to buy a 17 dollar CD just to get that one good song..

  70. ginanabtl says – reply to this

then why can we buy singles at the store sold individually? i think itunes is great for music - AND the environment - down with plastic jewel cases and unnecessary booklets that are the art of someone wlese and rarely of the artist themselves anyway - jermain dupri - you SUCK and so does your HAS-BEEN girlfriend - LOSERS!

    74

The reason Jay-Z can do that is because he actually has a whole album worth listening to…So called artist such as Soulja Boy and the likes only have one good song with a catchy riff and therefore can only make money on a single. When artist start creating albums like The Marshall Mather LP, The Black Album, Pearl Jam's - Ten, Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, etc etc then there won't be a call for singles only….Until then …shut ur pie holes because like it or not we (the consumers) run this mother fucker!

  75. Shauna says – reply to this

    75

Earth to Jermaine!! If was the big record labels that ignored the power of the internet for so long that that is why they are in this mess in the first place. Don't you dare try to blame it on the consumer or a company such as iTunes that is trying to make the best of of legal downloading. In your opinion you make good albums, in my opinion, they all sound the bloody same! Knowing record labels as I do they do not want their artists deviating to far off the common path. The new American Gangster album is really good, I'll give Jay-Z the credit for making a great album but it doesn't sound a lot different from others. I wouldn't say I'm astounded by the lyrics or the music. No, times have changed and artists and major labels can't back peddle now, it won't work fighting the tide. You have to figure out new ways to make us happy because ultimately the business built on "your back" as you put is in actual fact built on the money that has come out of the consumers pockets.

  76. Danielle says – reply to this

    76

Did he forget they used to release those hot singles separately (and ahead of the full album)? And also, does he actually make his own stuff or just produce other people's albums? Maybe he's just pissed ’cause no one wants HIS stuff

    YEAH………….RIGHT.

JERMAINE DUPRI IS A STUPID FUCK.

  79. Totally Agree says – reply to this

    79

Y'all are such a bunch of fools. How would you feel if you worked for a whole year on an album only for a few songs to get downloaded? Usually when you buy a whole album you get a chance to hear other songs that might not get as much airplay, and you might actually find that you like those better. I-tunes is just wrong. I'm sure in time they'll be disecting movies as well and you'll be able to download your favourite scene fom a movie without even watching the whole thing. Sounds DUMB? Yep, thats exactly what they're doing to music. Jermaine is right, if YOU make the music YOU decide how its sold. Makes sense people, stop being so stupid and hateful.

  80. cindyg34 says – reply to this

    81

He's an idiot. Sometimes there is only one song on an album that's good, why should we have to buy the whole thing? And listen to a bunch of crappy filler tracks? That's bullshit. He should be thankful if people use Itunes instead of limewire or another free download site/program.

  82. Kaitlin says – reply to this

    82

BTW everyone should use Limewire…..it's free and you can get whatever music you want. Don't waste your money.

  83. stefystef says – reply to this

    83

You know, if the albums had more than one good song on them, people would buy the whole album. I, personally, still buy CDs when buying the whole album. The problem is that when people buy one or two songs, the artists get their money in drips and drabs.

Jermaine is pissed that Janet's album he produced bombed. And his last couple of work has bombed. So he's pissed. There ya go.

  84. sonnygurl says – reply to this

    84

Completed misguided! I was a part of a major label street team for 2 years at one point and I was astounded by the inner workings of the label. The street team was asked to a meeting with the marketing/advertising department. We were all really excited, we are the people that are on the streets and know what indie bands are doing well, and what the kids are listening to, and what goodies are popular, we sat down in the meeting eager to tell them everything going on and their first question to us was, "Ok, Jennifer Lopez is coming out with a new album, how do we market her?" WHAT THE FUCK!!! J.Lo is advertising in herself, but this was their concern. So forgive me Jermaine if I don't sympathize with your plight. The majors have been churning out shit for so long just so they could line their pockets that they've lost any kind of trust or credibility they deserved. They didn't pick up on downloading fast enough and iTunes is one of the business that is trying to help them recoup the P2P losses, don't look a gift horse in the mouth buddy. You're only where you are today because we helped you get there. I know a lot of people making music who are broke and barely can afford to eat, and the people they depend on is the people who will buy the album at shows. Don't forget that the $$ you and your label spend to make your albums and videos came from my pocket. Dick…

music producer JD could very well go back to the record companies and ask them to bundle their albums as "album only" and let's see how well these albums sells on iTunes. i agree with all this artist vision and stuff, but it's not like they have been putting out great albums lately.

  93. Forest says – reply to this

    93

Here you go again, fatass. You're putting words in someone's mouth. As a musician, when I take the time to put together an album, I want people to hear the whole damn thing. So I understand where he's coming from. Is it the most realistic place? No, but he's just saying that artists want more control regarding how their art is sold and presented. What's wrong with that?

  94. musicdivaSF says – reply to this

    94

JD can request the music companies to bundle their albums as "album only" and let's see how well they sell on iTunes. i agree with this artist vision and all but it's not liek they have been putting out great songs out there lately. i bought janet's 20 y.o and that was a waste of money.

    95

Want people to buy albums and not singles??? MAKE THE REST OF YOUR ALBUM BETTER!

No one bought Soulja Boy's album, cuz it SUCKED as a whole. The single that came out was the only decent song on it, so people bought that.

  96. AgentGiggles. says – reply to this

    96

As much as I would like to agree, most music now a days sucks wank. Truly. Is there really any kind of message anymore other than "Look what I gotz boyz! Itz a big car and oh, herez my ho! But I love you ho! Remember that…as I get another car!"
It's all over processed and done. All the good music is hard to come by and half the time can't be found except with downloading. I haven't bought a CD for 5 years because I was tired of paying $20 for something that SUCKED! The few CDS I would buy are by little artists that no one knows about. Maybe if artists stopped caring about what's going to be the "hot track" and focus on actual expression the fans would bother. I think it's true loyalty when a fan will go see the person in concert. Not "oh, I liked this one song so I just bought the cd to look cool! YAY!"
    Suck it Jermaine.
    Love,
    A true music fan.

I'm not ever going to another cd as long as live, cuz most music sucks now anyway. And if Itunes didn't exist then there is always illegal downloading.
