Bitter, Party of One

William Shatner has not been asked to make a cameo in the new J.J. Abrams-directed version of Star Trek, and he's mad!

The film will tell the story of a young Kirk and Spock, and Leonard Nimoy will reprise his role as the pointy-eared Spock in the film. Several other original cast members will also have small parts in the film. But not Shatner.

"How could you not put one of the founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected? That doesn’t make good business sense to me!," the actor tells TV's Extra. "I’ve become even more popular than I was playing Captain Kirk. I’m good box office and I get publicity…. But, they are going in a different direction and it’ll be a wonderful film.”

Girlfriend, simmer down.

Maybe they're not asking you back cuz of your major 'tude????

Actually, Mr. Shatner was on Howard Stern a few weeks ago and he said he didn't' really give a shit.

I don't see any 'tude in his statements. He speaks the truth. He feels he should be in it - but they made the decision not to include him, so be it.

    28. joce says – reply to this

      28

its like doing a movie of Friends and not asking jennifer aniston to be in it. she was a major character on that show and pretty much the only one still mentioned in the media now.

He has no tude that he hasnt earned. people dont realize that hes acting style is fake. he created that to get noticed for better roles. it worked and hes kept it going for nearly 50 years. its his trademark, and the reason star trek was as popular as it was in the begining.

    29. trekkie1 says – reply to this

      29

Didnt Kirk die in one of the movies? I'm guessing that's why they are not bringing him back, ** SPOILER AHEAD ** I heard this movie has to do something with Spock of the future going back in time, so Kirk is dead if they are keeping the same continuity.

    30. debbie says – reply to this

      30

He has every right to have a major "tude". He IS star trek…. A cameo wouldn't hurt. Hell, the viewers would want him in it! Listen fatass, it's the same as VH1 putting on a perezhilton.com movie 30 years from now and having your friend WINO to a cameo.. and saying FUKK you fatt ass! You have really bad green hair and we don't like your gay tude! I'm sure you and your FAT ASS would be crying your hairy fat ass off!

    31. star trek fan forever says – reply to this

      31

He is campy and funny and the original Kirk. Maybe it would give him a reason to lose the booze bloat for a while and be the dude we all loved long ago. They should offer him the part with the stipulation he dry out and slim down for it.

I assure you, 40 lbs ago he would've been in the movie. Period. Film makers probably felt what he looks like now would make his appearance seem satirical. Shitty, but true.

    39. KML says – reply to this

      39

Um.. I don't see why you think he's giving off some major tude! For one thing I think he has every right to have his feeling hurt over this… they did ask back other former cast members but him! And… if you read his quote above… he did say he thinks it will still be a wonderful film… I actually think he handled the situation with class.

A dapper dude in the original and he ballooned up to a VERY healthy size, much larger than Kirk is now, and he still had some prime camera time in the movies. Plus he wasn't even the main protagonist on the show…something fishy going on here!

Oh, come on - Shatner's 'tude' is always only comic irony, and usually self-effacing. Surely they can give him a cameo. God knows he's earned it. His stock is up exponentially as the years go by. Loved his bit in W.O.W.

    48. NOT a "Has Been" says – reply to this

      48

William Shatner is a national treasure and an iconoclast. Have you ever heard is album "Has Been?" It's perfect. I don't like Star Trek, I never have. But he's a genius. Period. Go buy "Has Been" right now. It's one of the best albums of the past 10 years.

    49. HomeyCanuckFan says – reply to this

      49

Fabulous William Shatner is 76 years old, and has earned the right to enjoy a good meal or three. Not writing him a part is a lost opportunity. For THEM.

    50. mia says – reply to this

      50

William Shatner deserves at least an invite. If those writers couldn't conjure a cameo that would blend, then they are the ones who should deplane. I for one will greatly miss the great Captain Kirk. The interplay between Kirk and Spock is a key element of the entire saga. What are these producers thinking?

I think they should've put him in (in the new Star Trek movie) make up as an alien, and get killed in the opening scene,

or better yet make him some extra (you know, the guy who is always wearing a redshirt down on the planet during an away mission - and doesn't come back)

Geez its really simple, Nimoy, other than age, looks the same. Shatner is a big fatso, and looks nothing like he did when he played Capt. James T Kirk. If he lost weight I would bet he would be asked. But the producers are not going to be rude and tell him that in so many words.

Wait, wait, I read with my own eyes that Shatner said that he didn't have time to do the movie and now he's bitching that they didn't ask him to be in it? If you said you couldn't do it, then don't complain when they don't write you into the script.

    82. renn says – reply to this

      82

oh, please! William Shatner is actually the epitome of non-attitude and tact. Read his autobiography and listen to him sometime (like on Howard Stern). He will never say ANYTHING bad about any former castmate. Ever. Even when he's goaded and pushed. I remember hearing him being asked about Uhura and that Asian guy– both of them disliked Shatner. Shatner wouldn't say ONE negative thing about them and praised them.

He doesn't have an attitude and his comments made complete sense. I'll see that new Star Trek movie, but I'd rather see Shatner in it (even in a cameo role) than any other former trekkie cast member (even Nemoy, who I really like). Shatner is completely right and he said what he said honestly and tactfully.

Shatner ROCKS. So he actually shows his age, BFD! You can't tell me they couldn't give him a teeny scene. So what if he died - actually ain't he just in the Nexus? Plus, if it is a storyline that old fart Spock is going back in time… who says that he isn't going back in time from a point BEFORE Kirk got sucked into the Nexus? Or, shocker of shockers - why does Shatner have to play old Kirk???? I used to follow Star Trek - but I don't remember much canon storyline about Kirk's background other than he was from the midwest. If the new film is about the beginning - when Kirk & gang first met and got on the Enterprise - why can't Kirk's "grandfather" see him off?
