Halifax Hates Celine

Filed under: Canadialand > Celine Dion

normal_celinedion_delles_al__opt.jpg

Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.

What??? Really?????

The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:

"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.

"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."

Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.

Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.

Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.

"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

Sorry, Halifax.

Maybe next time!

    Hey Perez,
I live in Hali, and yeah, public reaction was very mixed, which I am sure did not make Rene and Celine very happy. I know i was on a facebook group about her not coming to town, and various messageboards in town talked about it. It's not the fact that _she_ is coming (though I would rather watch a REAL tranny than a woman who looks like one, pre-horomones and rhinoplasty), it's the fact that it would be held on a public park, which means Haligonians would have to pay to be on public land, effectively ruining the park and causing damage to one of the citie's most beloved green spaces.

She was going to perform at an area that hosted Rolling Stones last year, a huge outdoor venue… it's a place for big rock concerts and when it was in the news that a concert was brewing … the last person people expected was Celine… .. I mean ppl stood in the cold rain for hours for the Stones… would her fan base do the same for her? I don't think

she would be appreciated as an indoor concert, i'm sure. but would not draw the younger, outdoor concert appreciating, crowd

I think that he maybe should have read the full article and he would have realized that it wasn't a big put down at all. I think that they just don't actually want to come here, its not the first excuse that they've made to not come here. I mean, come on, give your own country a try why don't ya….I guess vegas has given her a thinner shell for media

its true, I live up here and the reaction has been really negative. The stones were here last year and there was talk of another big rock show for this coming summer and now people are acting all put out. A local radio show had people calling in and whining about it, and he heard all that too. I don't blame Rene, he is only doing what a good manager would do. Why would you come where people keep saying 'you suck?' Too bad for Halifax!

    27

NOOO. this is so incredibly wrong. I live in Halifax and read the daily news every morning and read the article, and it was all over the newspaper today. He was statign the opposition in the first maybe 92 words of the article, saying that many people don't want her to come. But then for the next 3/4 of the article he goes on to say, hate it or love it, she'd do wonders for our city. And how great it would be to have her come, and it would only attract more and more artists to perform in our small city. So her husband definatly only read the first tiny paragraph and assumed.. So that's complete bullshit. Although the onlien forum wasss pretty harsh towards her..

hey guess what..i wouldn't pay money to see her…but yeah sucks i guess that the media was negative about it before it began…i guess as a whole that particular area don't hold many celine fans…..they didn't want her to come anyway. oh well ..why perform somewhere where the people don't like ur style

  33. ramblin'rose says – reply to this
    33

Actually, I'm sure some people there like her but the real story is that politicians, who were involved in bringing the Diva to Halifax, touted this concert as teh concert of the year. Halifax is a university town (not known to be huge CD fans) and was expecting.. U2, Elton John.. you get the idea. Then they threw out CD as the person not to miss. There was a massive outcry. Who wants to see CD in a flat field in the pouring rain? (which was the venue). Then Mr. Dion got his nose out of joint without learning the story.
    Grrr…

    36

hey, so i live in halifax, and the reason there's all this hoopla about celine is because she was booked to play an outdoor venue. last year the stones played it… it's just not a celine venue. i'm sure SOMEONE in halifax would go to see her at a different venue. the commons (where she was supposed to play) is all out doors, at the stones it was pouring and muddy and the thought was that celine fans wouldn't dig it.
halifax isn't ACTUALLY hating on celine…

I'm from Halifax and I didn't want to see her either. But really, I mean c'mon… they cancelled because of 'feelings'? Maybe the people (who I'm sure are plenty) that wanted to see her just weren't the ones writing the articles they read. It seems silly that someone so talented with such a HUGE fan base would cancel due to feelings. Very unprofessional and immature. I think that excuse is a lie. And, if it's not a lie, it's not very intelligent.

I am embarrassed to be a Haligonian….Yeah I want more rock too, but hey, everyone should be welcome. The excuse about damage to a green space is bullshit. We unfortunately always bitch about what ever band comes to town. The papers bashed Guns N Roses when they came, The Stones, and on and on.

There's a LOT more to this story……we were promised a "rock" concert. The Rolling Stone played the same venue, people complained about the anticipated disruption and the noise and THEY still came and played and everyone had a great time. She needs a thicker skin.

I'm from Halifax. I wanted to say, that it wasn't that people here didn't want Celine to come; it's that the venue where she was scheduled to play (an outdoor park) was not the right venue for her. Last year the Rolling Stones played there during a rainstorm. I can't imagine too many Celine Dion fans wanting to go to an outdoor concert in that kind of weather. If she came here to play at an indoor venue I'm sure people would have been excited!

  50. I call "Bullmerde!!" on this! says – reply to this
    50

I heard the Mayor of Halifax speaking on tv this morning about the issue and he said that Celine's camp has now given 3 different reasons why she can't hold a concert there:
    - the venue wasn't appropriate for her concert production - bullmerde - the Stones have one of the most technologically advanced stages & they played there last year with no problem
    - she doesn't do outdoor concerts - bullmerde - she's playing an outdoor concert in Quebec City for their upcoming 400th year anniversary
    - and now her husband/manager claims it's because of the negativity - if she hasn't grown a thick skin by now, then maybe she should pack it in.

    BULLMERDE!

Rhodeniser had it bang on. Who wants to see Celine in a gorgeous, huge outdoor park? What the heck type of dancing would be going on? Not much, I can tell you that. I'd much rather see Our Lady Peace or the Tragially Hip in the Commons, any day! I'd even pay to see Matt Mays over Celine, anytime! Then we maritimers get accused of being negative and having a "culture of defeat." I'd challenge it and say we know how to get more bang for our buck, and why would we want to shell out much $$ for a Quebecer when we'd have more fun at the Lower Deck. Yes by's, head on down to the Lower Deck and then come back and tell me we are a bunch of negative Nova Scotians. Bye bye Celine, we don't want ya.

    Her husband FLAT OUT LIED.

She decided against playing in Halifac because of a concert she scheduled BEFORE CANCELLING IN HALIFAX …in Quebec. She is playing in Quebec City on Aug. 22, just a day before she was to play there. It is part of their 400th Anniversary celebration.

The first lie:"Following discussions with various professionals and experts, it was agreed that the venue is not appropriate for the concert’s elaborate production needs and would not satisfy the best interests of Celine Dion’s public," it said. And the second lie was against a reporter…THAT SAID NOTHING WRONG. He just stated that it wasn't his cup of tea but thought it would be great for Halifax. He did not say anything bad about Celine. The third lie was about a blog…are you kidding me???? Can you imagine if the diva read ALL THE NEGATIVE crap that EVERYONE says about her.

I never liked her…now I will have nothing but complete disdain for a liar that dissappointed so many people that where looking forward to it. I think the ugly big nose french bitch has finally showed what a bitch she is. Thinking she is too good for the people that made her famous. I know as a Canadian…she does not make me proud.

I live in Halifax and its not that people don't want her to come, it's the purely the venue. When the Rolling Stones came to the Commons (the local green space), it was raining, people were rocking in the mud, and because its an open-air concert. I think most people would agree that they're not prepared to stomp in the mud while Celine sings Beauty and The Beast. If it was at Halifax's indoor concert venue (like the upcoming sold out Michel Buble concert) than people would be fine!

We live in the 21st century people. All the canadians that simply hate celine JUST b/c she's an international star.. get over yourself. Seriously. She's a human being first and can do whatever makes her happy and successful. Her talent deserves to be shared with the rest of the world and not just kept in canada for you. And what amazes me most is that in ever award she wins, in ever interview she gives all she talks about is the love of her home and where she comes from. If anyone should be shown respect it's her. All you canadians that only hate her for that reason should be ashamed… ASHAMED! Grow up.

I'm glad she's not coming to Halifax - I can't imagine anyone "rocking out" to celine dion in concert. We get very few concerts and it was disappointing to hear that she was the chosen one. Bring her to an indoor venue and charge more money and you'd pack the place - but not an outdoor concert where you're standing (maybe in the rain) for hours listening to soft-rock and ballets. Bon Jovi - absolutely! Bring 'em on!! Stones - fantastic show! Jerry Sienfield is coming and I'm sure he'll sell out at $500 a ticket. Hell - Ozzy Ozborne would rock, but not celine dion….. no offense celine, sorry.

I think Rene Angelil made it pretty clear on why they cancelled the Halifax concert and honestly, I don't blame them at all. Would you want to go perform somewhere where people made it blatantly clear that you are not wanted? Celine is loved and welcomed with open arms throughout the world. She IS the worlds best selling female artist in history. It's sad that Halifax missed out on her, and it is very much their loss.

The venue is not appropriate for Celine and her fans that are of a more mature age….there isn't even a place for ppl to sit! Maybe if it were to be hold at the metro center, it would have been more appealing…..the Commons is not the place to hold a concert of this nature……..
