Halifax Hates Celine
Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.
What??? Really?????
The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:
"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.
"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."
Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.
Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.
Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.
"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

I am from Halifax, and would first like to note that we have a wicked reputation for hating on Canadian artists. Listen to the song "Hello City" by the Barenaked Ladies…yup, that's about Halifax after they received a less than friendly welcome back pre-US fame.
I for one was super excited to see Celine, and was planning to buy the new album and tickets to the concert along with MANY of my friends. Unfortunately she cancelled and now I am pissed because I don't write all over the place that I don't care about the Rolling Stones and think it is a waste for them to come when they were in NB the year before and the majority of people that went in Halifax had also gone in NB (I was going to go just for Kanye and then leave but didn't), so why people have to be such asses about Celine is beyond me. It isn't like this is going to make another band come, it just means that the people who actually wanted to go to this concert are missing out.
That being said, I am now Pissed at Celine and her husband and though I have all of her albums to date, I will not buy this one (not that I'm sure it matters to her) because what they did, canceling the show did nothing but show those people that they can bully their way into getting what they want and the only people who are going to suffer are her fans.

hello haligonians. What a strange reaction!! Having Céline Dion in your city for a concert should be considered as a privilege and a great event. No matter if it is inside or outside. Who can tell if it will rain, one day or another? On my behalf, I would stay under the rain, even under the snow to see Céline! I often attend outdoor concerts. Each time, i bring with me an umbrella and a raincoat, just in case… Last summer, we were on the Plaines d'Abraham in Québec City for a concert, and guess what??? A huge thunderstorm occured just before the show.Everybody stood in place an we kept our enthousiasm. We just laughed at the situation and we enjoyed a very good show. Appreciating an outdoor concert in bad weather is a question of attitude. It doesn't have anything to do with who is on the stage, performing. Would it be Céline Dion, The Rollind Stones or anybody else. Céline will give an outdoor concert in Québec City next summer, on August 22nd. I'll be there, rain or sun. For those of you who are disappointed of not seeing her in Halifax, you'll be very welcome in Québec City. And because the concert is part of 400th anniversary of the city, the admission to it will be free(no charge). Québec City loves Céline,as I'm pretty sure, most of the people in Halifax.

Well, duh she was getting a bad reaction! she was performing in an outdoor venue close to the water and let's be realistic, at least 70% of her fan base are women over the age of 40. So I'm not sure who assumed these middle aged women would be willing to stand outside in the maritime weather for hours to hear her sing. That would take a pretty dedicated fan base.
I can't believe a professional manager cancelled a show in a fit of pique over his limited perception of a situation, and then embarrasingly and ungraciously waved his erroniously perceived 'snit' publicly like that. Not classy, IMHO. Totally disregarded Celine's fans in favor of giving the faux finger to Hali's Rock Fans.

I am from Halifax and I have to say I WAS disappointed when I heard it was Celine coming. I think that has to do with the fact that I've never liked her music and that the Stones have put this vision in a lot of people's heads of an awesome f*cking show at the commons… and we want to see it happen (again).

We put our money on another horse, because Celine was a poor show in our city field. But, we will turn another cheek her way, cause we will win a better act.
Some in Halifax wanted to see her her face before she was put out to pasture. It seems like the grass was greener (or, tastier) for her on the fields of Quebec city, where a memorable battle was fought, so many years ago.
We had our own 400 year celebration in 2004. The first French settlement in North America was in the Maritimes in 1604. We did not need a symbolic USA Vegas act to celebrate.

I am also living in Halifax and I believe the issue is simply what someone else on here has already stated. Celine's fan base is not exactly the type that we would imagine standing outside, among tens of thousands of people, rain or shine. If the concert were set to be in an inside venue, people would be much more for her coming. When she was here in 1996, her concert was sold out and received amazing reviews. I would have loved to see Celine play here, but I was hesitant myself in going to see her perform at an outside venue. I can't exactly see her performing in the rain, which does happen quite a bit in Halifax.

Now I really hope you get your show with Ozzi and many more rock bands, they're all great, I agree with you. One thing I desagree is that Celine is beeing ridiculised and laughed at for no reason, yes she is skinny and has a long nose and is sometimes phony, and me too she goes on my nerves at time, she has too much energy, but I still respect her. Yeah, nothing to do with Celine and everything to do with the city using public space for a private function. The media seems to think Halifax hates her, and it's totally not relevant. None of the journalists are talking about the abuse of public money, or how badly torn apart the park was following the Rolling Stones concert last year. Well, Perez, maybe you should read the column that Mr Rene is reacting to and publish that - you'd see that his reaction is unfounded.
I am proudly from Halifax. And though I may not be a fan of Celine Dion, I must say that no matter the band, or artist. There will always be bad publicity. I am stoked about Ozzy and Zombie coming to Halifax. But not everybody will be. There will probably be just as much bad publicity about them coming, as there was about Celine. BUt that doesnt mean that they are going to back out because a few assholes dont want to see them. Celine should not have backed out, she should have sucked it up and came, and just changed the venue she was performing in, and many of people would have went. Not everyone is loved by all… but some people just cant take the fucking heat.
